Magical Evenining 3/1/2005

A great night. I especially liked our service - none of the smarmyness of like-priced restaurants, and extremely attentive without being obtrusive. The wine list is mostly domestics, with some rare meritages and some great values in each varietal. The food was excellent, truly the best meal I have had. Don't dare leave without ordering some of the game dishes. Overall, a great experience, and my top 'price-be-damned' location. Pros: Environment, Food, Service Cons: It ain't cheap! more

Such an amazing restaurant 2/3/2005

I really have nothing bad to say about this restaurant. I took my boyfriend here for brunch on his birthday and he absolutely loved it. We both devoured our dishes (eggs benedict- but with homemade croissants! and french toast- absolutely huge with a side of wild boar hash- tastes better than it sounds) and the dessert was amazing. I asked them to make him a special dessert because it was his birthday and they executed it all very well. He was kind of embarrassed but they did a great job overall. I highly recommend this restaurant- can't wait to return for dinner. Pros: Romantic, Great food, Great service Cons: Expensive, bad for vegetarians more

Must Try in LA 5/24/2004

Its worth the drive to try this LA original. The food was great. I got the mushroom tart, which was so flavorful, and the elk for the entree. It was light on the game flavor and very tender. The dessert came with a great Wild Turkey caramel sauce and surprisingly it wasnt gamey at all. The service was very helpful, except for the recommendation of some blue cheese salad. I vote to eliminate salads off menus , it doesnt show the talent of the chef. Pros: Game, Food more

Excellent, though not for animal lovers 2/24/2004

Had Sunday brunch there & had a great time. It's about 45 mins. from LA, so plan ahead. Service from the valet to the servers were flawless, & prices were affordable. Don't get the souffle pancakes, though, as they are very sweet & sour (a little too much to finish). I only got to eat 2 (out of 6!). The pastries were out of this world, esp. the banana nut (the best ever!). Animal lovers beware, as all the walls are covered w/ some kind of animal part (I'm an animal lover but had the gust to stick it out). Very different! Pros: Excellent Service, Quality Food, Reasonable Prices Cons: , Not for vegetarians more

A major dining ride! 9/15/2003

This is the place to take out-of-towners. An old converted stage coach stop, it's a marvel atop the Santa Monica mountains. Especially in spring. Forget the power seating downstairs. Ask for the library. Much more intimate, uncrowded. Go for Sunday brunch, and go hungry. Wonderful unusual fare at dinner time. A genuine A plus experience. Expensive, but you'll never forget it. Pros: Ambience, Sunday brunch, History Cons: Pricey more

This unpretentious hunting lodge is well worth the short scenic drive from Malibu for a change in ambience. Delicious food, attentive servers and good wine make for an enjoyable evening. Just watch the winding road. Pros: food selection Cons: parking more
