Dr. Porter has horrible bed side manner 9/7/2006

My father recently had surgery performed by another doctor in Dr. Porter's office (Dr. Shapiro). Due to an infection that developed after his release from the hospital, my father was re-admitted for treatment of the infection. While my father was in the hospital, several tests were performed and all my father was told was that "something had been found and that his new medication was for that". When I questioned the nurse about what had been found, she told me that she wasn't allowed to relay that information and that I would need to talk to the doctor for results. Since I either got to the hospital after the doctor's made their runs in the morning or before they got there in the evening, I couldn't get the results of the tests. So, I got to the hospital earlier hoping to catch the doctor. The nurse told me that the doctor hadn't come yet and that she would call to let him know that I wanted to speak to him. As it turned out, it was Dr. Porter on call that day making rounds. He came in and shook my hand and said that he had heard that I had questions about the bone scan. I asked him what they had found and he said "Cancer", then I asked where it had been found and he said "you want to know where exactly?" and I said yes. So he went out to the nurses desk and looked in the file and came back and told me "we found it in L4 and R6 (something like that) and I said "and where is that on the body?" He was very rude and said "you want to know exactly?", then he said "What difference does it make?" So, I said my father has been having back and hip pain, could it be caused by that?" to which he said "yes, it could". I asked him what the new medication does for my father's condition and he told me. Then I asked him how long my father would need to take it and he said "as long as it works". That was pretty much all that was said. The patients family in the other bed who is a patient of Dr. Porter's remarked that Dr. Porter had never been that rude or curt with them. I also mentioned my conversation with the nurses on duty and was assured that the situation would be written down in my fathers file as well. I was and still am completely disgusted with the way I was treated by Dr. Porter. I'm just sorry that I never got to meet Dr. Shapiro, who my father swears by. more
