Great Plae for a Relaxing Date/Dinner with Friends 2/17/2009

Fabulous food with a beautiful view of the sound. It never seems overly crowded and you can actually hear your conversation. It is true that Hussein will make you something you will love. I was a bit worried for my vegetarian friend when she took him up on his offer, but she was very happy with her meal. Try the calamari for an appetizer. more

Excellent Lebanese restaurant 1/4/2007

We have visited Phoenecia on Alki for several years on New Year's Eve. It really is a great place. The atmosphere, the food, the wine, all of it is very good. Never fear asking Hussein to just find you something you would like--I know the previous reviewer said something about the wine list being weak, but it turned out there were several bottles of wine that were similar to something on the wine list but weren't actually listed. Anyway, the grilled king salmon is excellent, as is the roast lamb. No question, this is one of my favorite places. more

Hussein Will Hook You Up 10/5/2006

I'd never even heard of Phoenecia on Alki Beach before we took a friend there for her birthday dinner--and I almost want to keep it a secret all to myself. It is a classy little Lebanese restaurant that didn't have a wait even on a Saturday night, and I can't tell you why. Everything was fantastic, from the succulent dip served with the bread, to the savory pomegranate calamari, to the huge and fantastic dish Hussein made "special for you!" for all of us to share. I can't tell you what it was; what I can tell you is that I was in coconut seafood curry bliss for at least an hour. And that was before he brought out his signature flaky cardamon dessert with rosewater ice cream. Ahhh.... more

Let Hussein do the ordering 4/10/2006

A real standard for Alki and a nice owner who makes his own rose and lavender infused ice creams. He really does a nice job. The wine list is weak, so go simple. We let Hussein tell us what to try and just go with it. Usually a really good way to go, even when goat arrives! Salty's has the view, but the Phonecia has the food. more

  • The Scene
Named after the ancient civilization that was centered in today's Lebanon, this restaurant serves Middle Eastern specialties in an atmosphere that is both low-key and elegant. The avuncular Hussein Khazaal runs a homey dining room, roaming from table to table, eager to prepare a personal meal for the neatly attired (but not overdressed) clientele. Add in white linens and a view of Elliott Bay, and it's no wonder this West Seattle fine-dining institution has been attracting a crowd for 34 years.

    The Food

Watching the bright Seattle sun sink behind the Olympics while enjoying warm bread, hummus and a cold Retsina definitely puts patrons in a Mediterranean mood. Appetizers cover familiar ground like smoky baba ghanoush, but the ultra-tender calamari stands out with a sweet pomegranate twist. Entrees, including broiled lamb, ahi tuna and broiled chicken, boast big flavors with Greek and some Italian accents.
