Great crowd - a real mix of locals, townies and touristas all wanting to have a good time. The bartenders can be abrupt at times but they know every shooter and drink you can imagine. If you have a new one they'll make it for you. You can sit at the bar with a beautiful 30-year-old woman on one side and a seventy-year-old guy on the other and have an interesting conversation with them both. Friday and Saturday nights are insane. Way too many people having fun. Check it out but don't park illegally and don't drive drunk. The local police will get you in a heartbeat. I visit Pete's Bar last March with two friends of mine for the first time. Me and my buddies (we are from Germany) was there for spring vacation and Bikeweek in Florida and someone said to us. "" You have to go to Pete's Bar"". And thanks God, we were there. We spend so many owesome hours there with a lot of fun, good musik and a lot of great people we've got to know there. I try to visit old bars in every city I travel to. Pete's Bar is still the best historic bar, bar none! The bartenders are gruff. They want you to order your drink and move on. I like that. I'm at bars to talk to my friends and meet people not to be entertained by the bartendar. And they don't want to entertain me either!\r The prices are fair and the pool tables are well kept and only a quarter per game to play.\r \r There are old photos on the wall from visitors throughtout the years. I saw one of Castro, Earnest Hemingway, Bear Bryant and a bunch of football players with autographs to the owners.\r \r Pete's also is the only place in town opened on Thanksgiving and Christmas. They say they know there are lots of people without family during the holidays and want to give them a place to come in. The Thanksgiving party has ended up being the most fun day of the year.\r \r I highly recommend this place for anyone of any age especially if you are a young kid and just having your first drink. I had heard about Pete's for many years. I have friends from all over the country that would talk about it. I always wondered, ""What makes this bar so great for people to talk about it while on vacation?"" I finally moved to Gainville and made a special trip to go with a few friends (Who had heard of Pete's as well). It lived up to everything I heard plus! \r It's not fancy or trendy. It is a real bar. Just like the kind my granddad frequented in New York City. Everything is original from when it opened in the early 1930""s. You get a drink and play pool. The crowd is very mixed. I sat next to an older gentleman who said he had been a regular at Pete's for over 50 years! He sits in the same chair and drinks the same drink every day. He said most of the people in there call it their home. He told me that the owners where the grand daughter and great grand kids of Pete Jensen who immigrated from Denmark via Ellis Island and New York City. They are very careful not to change anything and treat everyone as if they are in their home...How cool is that?\r The crowd we saw was very mixed; to the older gentleman I talked to almost all night to bankers, bikers, beachbums and college kids.\r Going to Pete's Bar will give you the same feeling you got in CHEERS! the TV show. If I had to sum it up I'd say Pete's Bar is more of an experience that just a bar. I think that's why Pete's is a legend. Pros: A place you want to become a regular at. I go to pete's bar to play pool with others.So for the fist time i was there i wasted to play some music, it was the download jukebox type,but i could'nt find any hip hop to play.I asked the bartender on duty about the jukebox.His response was I have nothing to do with that.So I kindly asked for my 2 bucks back.His starts yelling dont put any fu....ing money in the machine.He also said s...t aint gonna change for you BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I saw that people at the bar was a little upset,so I go over to the bar to say sorry(eventhough I did nothing wrong) The other bartender said get out!!! Go to another bar and download snoop doggy dog but not here. Now for who reads this I have done nothing wrong to the staff did'nt raise my voise just talking. An icon of the Jacksonville beaches. Very laid back, no fancy decor. Lots of pool tables. Fun people. Mostly a hangout for locals, but a very non-judgemental clientele. more
