Poor Service 8/24/2008

Jimmy Wilson's oners sold the 12109 Westheimer Rd location to the Pappas chain .However, the Jimmy Wilson name is still on the building. The food was good but the service was lousy. I asked for my gumbo before my po boy. They came out at the same time. Ordwered bread pudding. It took 20 minutes, Waiter was attentiver. Problem was in the kitchen. Jimmy Wilson's owners need to get their name off of this business before poor service reflects on their San Felipe location. Pros: Good Food Cons: Poor Sewrvice from new owner more

Not worth the money 5/17/2008

I went there when it was Denis' and liked it alot. The service and ambience were great, however the actual food I can't speak so highly about.. The dirty rice and gumbo were disappointing. The fish of the day that was supposed to be on my combination plate was Mahi Mahi, however what I got was salmon. The deception of switching the actual type of fish made me angry. The stuffed shrimp, Oyster Rockefeller, and stuff crab were good, but nothing to write home about. The bread and baked potato that was served with the meal was the best part of my dining experience. For the amount of money we spent I expected alot more. I will not come back. Pros: ambience, service Cons: seafood more

Good food, be prepared to pay 5/25/2007

I went here on a Wednesday night and it was packed with people. I ordered N'awlins Crab Cakes with steamed broccoli and greek salad. The food was definitely good, very spicy. Everything on the menu is done New Orleans style or cajun, there really weren't many options for those like me with a very sensitve palate. I ended up trading my crab cakes, which were very spicy and full of pepper, for my boyfriends fried catfish and shrimp. These were good, but honestly it's hard to mess up fried seafood. The mashed potatoes were awesome. Our server seemed very rushed but we didn't want for anything. I hated the bread and wish she had at least offered use a dessert menu, but based on the reviews I've read today the dessert wasn't worth it anyway. We ended up paying $50 for water, iced tea, fried seafood and crab cakes. I think that is just too much, considering we didn't get any expensive fish. The atmosphere was not worth the price either, it was like a Chili's or Pappadeaux, which by the way both have less expensive food. Unless the prices go down a bit or they become a lot less crowded I probably won't go here again. If you want to pay for cajun style, fresh seafood, go for it. It's good for that. more

Best Fish Ever, Halibut in crab butter sauce. 4/11/2007

Great friendly service. Delicious appetizers (crab claws and fried shrimp get all three dipping sauces.) They recommended the halibut and it was sensational--best ever. Prompt friendly service delivered hot plate with world class asparagus with sauce and twice baked potato. Too full for desert but my wife had the key lime cheesecake and raved about it--I hadn't been to this place in a long time and it will now be a regular stop. This was one of the best meals I have in years and it came at a very reasonable price. The couple with us were meat eaters and they had similar reactions to the Veal and rib-in prime. Every element of the dining experience was perfect. Well Done Jimmy and Wilson! Pros: Service/Food/Setting/Price--Great Value! Cons: None more

Best Fried Shrimp In Town! 3/28/2007

Jimmy Wilson's is easily the best seafood in town, and even local celebs like Marvin Zindler and Dominique Sachse can be seen dining there. The cream crab bisque is the best I've tasted, and the fish are as fresh as you can get without catching it yourself. Good variety of sides in healthy portions including cajun favorites like red beans & rice, fried green tomatoes, and dirty rice. The only con I can think is the dessert menu leaves much to be desired. It's missing some cajun specialties like Banana's Foster, Creme Broulette, or Key Lime Pie. But generally, the appetizers and entree's are so good, you run out of room for dessert anyway. If you have not been, go to Jimmy Wilson's the next time you crave oysters, crawfish, lobster, shrimp, fish, or any other seafood dish you can think of! Pros: Fresh food, great service, large portions make the price worth it. Cons: Need better desserts! more

Best seafood for seafood snobs 3/13/2007

I am not at all a seafood lover. However, Jimmy Wilson's changed all that. Geoff, the manager, helped me choose a favorite that I simply must have every time I frequent this establishment. I have even ventured out a time or two and tried something new. I am very particular and being from "the Island", I am quite the seafood snob. Their seafood is always fresh, great tasting and the staff is excellent. I would highly reccommend Jimmy Wilson's to anyone looking for something new and different in town. I don't eat seafood anywhere else! more

SIMPLY THE BEST ~ FRESHEST ~ SEAFOOD & CHOPS EVER! 3/13/2007

Simply the BEST! I will not eat seafood anywhere but here. The quality and freshness of the food is obvious with each dish. I love the fresh fish selection. There are always several and many uncommon fish too. You can get Mahi anywhere but Angel fish and Tile are quite hard to find. I also love the fact that they filet all their fish. No crummy pre-filet or frozen stuff here. They also have a melt in your mouth LUMP crab cake that is To Die For! I love to add the Lump crab lemon butter topping. If you are not into seafood the Lamb and Filet are YUMMY too! Talk about rich! My newest favorite side are the mashed potatoes. Sounds simple but they are the creamiest flavorful potatoes ever! The wine list is great as well. I love the specials they have on wines and the great variety too. If you like fresh and FAB food try Jimmy Wilson's WE LOVE IT! Pros: Fresh Food ~ Great Variety ~ Great Value ~ Fun Cons: NONE! more

Best seafood and cajun food anywhere 3/11/2007

Jimmy Wilson's has the best Cajun & Seafood dishes in town. The gumbo and bisque (both traditional and creamy) are authentic and superb. Every entree (from the salads to the main course) are fresh, made from scratch and more than enough to satisfy the hungriest of appetites. And remember to save room for dessert. The homemade cheesecakes and bread pudding are to die for! The staff is friendly, thoughtful and professional and the management team is second to none. be sure to make Jimmy Wilson's your stop for the best seafood in town. more

Agreed, BEST Safood in the city!!!! 3/6/2007

have been eating here for about 10 years and have never been dissappointed. The staff is always friendly and prompt. The food is timely and fresh. I had heard about the name changing from Denis' to Jimmy Wilson's before it happened so it was no suprise to me that the quality of the food stayed the same and in fact got better. They have a great steak selection, very tasty. Just the other week they had almost every fish choice selected on their chalk board that they use, that was a great joy to have such a wide selection to decide from. I would recommened anyone that loves seafood to go eat at Jimmy Wilson's. It really is Love at First Bite. Pros: Great ambience, Friendly Staff all around Cons: None more

The Best Seafood in Town! 3/5/2007

The recent buy-out made my husband and I a bit weary of the new "Jimmy Wilson's" but after the host explained that Denis Wilson, the original owner was back all of my worries went away. We were seating after a 15-minute wait (to be expected on a Friday night), the server greeted us warmly and recommended the lemon drop martini. It was amazing the perfect combination of sweetness and tartness! I had the angelfish based upon another recommendation, once again AWESOME! To top it all off Rachel, the manager gave me a New Orleans?s Style Bread Pudding for my birthday. Perfect evening, perfect 10! Pros: A fun, lively, weekend bar crowd. Cons: I'll never eat seafood elsewhere agian! more

Fresh seafood at its best. 3/5/2007

Being from the food capital of the world NYC, I am so excited when my business ventures take me to Houston. I stop by Jimmy Wilsons formally Denis and enjoy one of at least ten or twelve different species of fresh fish caught that day and fileted in house. Fresh Texas Gulfcoast oysters or hot gumbo, crab bisque, lumpcrab saute or augratin , fried or broiled seafood platters, veal chops, live Maine lobsters the list of fresh gulfcoast seafood and wonderful steaks go on and on. And thats why I keep coming back.If he"s available ask for Billy he's been their for ever it seems, he will take good care of you and we always talk about old times growing up in New York. more

Best cajin seafood in town 3/3/2007

I live in austin but go to JW's everytime I'm in town. I stopped by on the way back from New Orleans and couldn't tell I was in Texas. I know they'll treat me right even if my favorite waiter, Billy is slammed. Great date spot and reasonably for the freshest seafood in town. If you don't go then you'll never know. Check it out. more

Incredible seafood and service! 2/28/2007

Jimmy Wilson's is my favorite seafood restaurant. The food is amazing and the toppings are the best. I love to get the mahi mahi with Ponchartrain topping and the shrimp is the best in town. They have an experienced staff and the servers are top of the line. It's a great place for a first date or just to take the family. The floorplan is nice and the booths are great for a more private dining experience. The fully stocked bar is great for after dinner. I will continue to eat here every time I am craving a really good seafood meal. And with such reasonable prices, I can eat here often. Pros: Good food, Parking, Service, Staff, Full bar Cons: None more

Most Excellent Seafood 2/27/2007

Where do I start? The food here is truly excellent. They have a wide variety of fresh fish that you won't find at many other restaurants. I am a huge fan of their spinach dip, and their oysters on the half are always great. The service is great too- everyone makes you feel at home. I have had many good experiences at Jimmy Wilson's with my family, and we always leave with a good taste in our mouths. Pros: great food, atmoshpere and service Cons: if you are allergic to seafood, you may not like this place more

Best place for family 2/25/2007

My family and I have been to this place over five times and each time the service gets even better. The freshness of the food exceeds all of my restraunt standards. They have a wide variety of fish and diffrent combinations of platters. The first time we visited we asked about the freshness of the fish. Since I can't stand that frozen taste of seafood. The waitress explained that the fish were cut in house and everything was caught by their own fishermen. Then the manager Rachel brought out a whole Goldentile and explained that they check for clear eyes, size and springy flesh before they cut the fish. After that I was convinced that the food is truley fresh and you get what you payed for. Other restraunts try to pass cod or tilapia as the fish they are selling. NOT THIS ONE ! THIS IS A WINNER! Pros: If you gave up red meat for lent, This is the place that will cater to you! more

Freshest Seafood 2/24/2007

I have been going to Denis' restaurant for a long time. Now that Denis Wilson has regained control of the tiller I have returned to the new Jimmy Wilson's. Fresh raw oysters are how I like to start my meal but they have a broad variety of appeteasers including crab fingers and the steamed oysters. Now they have added chops (lamb, veal, pork) so I have a whole new variety of entrees to enjoy. The steaks are surprisingly good for a seafood restaurant. Good wine selection. Great variety of fish prepared in different styles (cajun, blackened, fried, grilled) with different toppings. I can finish off with scrumptious desserts. My mom prefers the shrimp (fried, of course), while the daughter's favorite is the gumbo, and the wife loves the rich, creamy lobster bisque. Simply one of my family's favorite places to eat out. Service always attentive, as you would expect. Now I hear they are going to open a place on San Felipe near the Galleria, closer to home, easier for me to get to. Pros: Parking (no stupid "Valet Parking"). Short wait time for table. more

Food might have been nice...if we ever got it 2/15/2007

If you want throw some money at service that is slower than molasses and apethetic staff, this is the place for you... I am not sure how the food would have been - we walked out after waiting 45 minutes when the place was not very busy. Staff had plenty of time to hang with each other - There was a whole lot of nothing going on. We left hungry and had to go across the street to get food. Denis's was so much better. Denis' should go tear their name off the walls so people won't associate them with the bad experiences they might get at JW's. Cons: very poor service and attention more

Jimmy Wilson Sold this location 2/7/2007

This use to be one of my favorite places to go eat at, then they opened the location on San Felipe so I go there now since it is closer to my house. I found myself out west the other day and decided to go back since I had not been there in some time. When I walked in the door it seemed different to me some how, the menu was different and after some sneaky questions I learned that Jimmy Wilson sold this location and then it all made sense. Some of the food is still similar to what it use to be but many of the great dishes are not the same. Pros: good fried food Cons: JImmy Wilsons is gone more

Exceptionally fresh seafood. A little noisy for a one-on-one conversation but not a big issue. 11/9/2006

I have eaten here many times. In fact, I stop occasionally and get their gumbo to go. I have to say, their gumbo is the closest I have ever gotten to my dad's gumbo (his was made with a really dark rouge). Congratulations to the chef! I will go back often as the food is that good. more
