Best

We were visiting Baltimore and my two sons wanted to go to this bar to see a band they were familiar with (Past Lives/Thermals) We had a great time. Once inside it was great. D...

Great place for cheap shows! 9/19/2005

If you're into the music scene.. specifically of rock genre.. this is a place to check out. They also have techno DJs spinning later that night usually, for the 21 and older crowd only of course (don't worry kids, everything else is all ages usually!) Conveniently located on howard street, it's basically a straight shot from 95 if you live south of Baltimore. They offer secure parking for a fee, or there is plenty of parking elsewhere for free (a little secret for cheapskates like me: park behind the building, there's a lot that's pretty safe). This venue is specifically for live music gigs, and there's a bar too. Some really great artists come through there, I would especially recommend this place if you're into Punk Rock, as I am. The shows tend to get a bit wild sometimes, but the bouncers pretty much keep things under control. If you like it wild, you can still have your fill though, but if you're more into just drinking and watching, stay towards the back if things look rough. If you're really old, or just need a seat, there's an upstairs with seating. There's even some classic video game machines for when you get bored between bands! (space invaders and area 51 as I recall) The only downside here is that, typical of Baltimore, there are bad areas located nearby. Cops are on patrol often though, so I wouldn't be too worried. I, myself, have walked around the area late at night on many occasions without problems. Park where I suggested and your car should be safe, but if you're extra paranoid, go for the premium pay parking. They pack em in there though, so I would say there's still a possibility of getting backed in to or something. If you're under 21, there's always extra cover (a dollar), so don't come unprepared. You can buy tickets to shows in advance too, but shows rarely sell out (unlike bigger venues like nation). Shows are generally around 15 bucks, more like 10 for the lesser known bands. Compared to Nation and 9:30 club, that's cheap! I think the real greatness of this place comes from seeing very large acts appearing in a smaller-than-usual venue, and relatively fewer people showing up. more

Editorial
  • In Short
Open since 1997, downtown Baltimore's Otto Bar has become one of the city's essential live-music venues, bringing in nationally touring acts and underground stars of the indie, punk, electronica and metal scenes. The interior may be beat up, but the hip, young clientele comes for music rather than atmosphere. Upstairs, the 21-and-older portion of the venue often features live jazz in the evenings and DJs later.
