Oriental Oasis 12/25/2006

After a tough week of work, nothing beats a nice massage. I love this place because they give a real massage. I love a nice hard deep tissue rub down and this place delivers. Too many places have staff that gives a very light massage. That really does nothing for me. If you want a solid massage then come here. more

Oasis on Thomas Circle 3/28/2006

For pampering, check out The Oriental Oasis (1 Thomas Circle, NW). I *love* this place and have been mani'd, pedi'd waxed, plucked, rubbed and buffed there for nearly 15 years. Not only is the spa peaceful and really pretty, but the staff has been consistent for years. They take groups, have spa packages and, in a pinch, will even take a walk-in appointment...cheerfully! They've recently added two hours validated parking at the garage next door too. It's not quite the Georgetown location you were hoping for, but it's SO worth the trip! Check out my review of this place 1/28/2006

Hi Gertha. I am African-American and although I have permed hair, I do have a suggestion for you. There's a place called Oriental Oasis (I know, the name suggests nothing about African-American hair) on Thomas Circle in downtown DC that caters primarily to African Americans. A stylist named Felicia is the one you want to find. She has natural hair herself and is familiar with its needs and how to style it. And if she feels someone else can do better, she'll refer you. I used to go see Felicia before I bought my first home and went on a strict budget (including doing my own hair), but I highly recommend her. Her prices are reasonable and she's very, very nice too. Good luck. more

Good service, great work, full-service salon 1/17/2006

In spite of the politically incorrect name, Oriental Oasis is a great full-service salon with stylists who specialize in African-American hair. Everyone here seems to do good work and have a following. They use good products and the prices are, on average, $20 to $30 lower than salons of a similar caliber. You might have a wait on some days, because this place is popular, but the stylists seem to go out of their way to work everyone in and out as quickly as they can. The owner, Touette (not sure if this is the correct spelling), actually is known around the district for her talent at eyebrow waxing. Her prices are a little higher than what you might find at the corner nail salon, but comparable to those at other upscale salons. This also is a good place to find hard-to-locate hair products. They sell those here too, as well as nail polish and beauty accessories. If you can go on a weekday, that's the best time -- you'll get in and out. The location is pretty good too, near the McPherson Square metro stop. more
