EAT AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6/11/2007

My husband and I rarely go to Brooklyn, so when we went there this Saturday we thought we would try Nio's for some Rotii. I was a little suspcious of the place as it didn't look like the cleanest West Indian food establishment in town but I ignored my gut instincts and resolved not to be a snob. We spend $70 on roti to take back home with us and share with our friends and family. We also purchased some Hard Dough Bread, a jar of Mango Amchar and some cakes. Much to our dismay, the entire family has had an upset tummy!!! The Mango Amchar jar had expired 9 months ago!!! The hard dough bread the owner packed for us was far from fresh and the most horrific is one of the cakes had spots of MOLDLY growths upon closer inspection. I am extremely disheartened and I feel cheated and upset at this experience. I don't think that a business this dirty and this dishonest should be serving the public. I would suspect that given the fact that we all had upset tummies and that the owner has the audacity to sell food that has gone off and is well past its expiration date there must be a serious case of food mal-handling in the restuarant. You have been warned you eat at your own risk. In the meantime I am taking this experience further by reporting it to the appropriate powers that be. more

Authentic Trinidad food and atmosphere 1/13/2007

Americans looking for West Indian haute cuisine might be disappointed. What Nio's does offer is wonderful Trinidad soul food. Delicious curried channa (chick peas) served on a tender bara (a small round bread) make up a great snack called ""doubles"". A heartier meal might be a beef roti (roti is an unleavened flat bread baked on a large tawa, or skillet), or the curry shrimp. A person could not go wrong having the spicy ""Jamaican/jerk chicken""; just be sure to order a shandy to help quench the fire! Pros: Lots of tables, good parking more

Good Flavor, Poor Delivery 3/16/2006

Nio's was my first experience with West Indian cuisine. I ordered the curry chicken which cost about $8. The chicken was unecessarily greasy and the bones were still left in the chicken. They were leg and thigh pieces and I kept wondering why they didn't leave the pieces whole instead of chopping them up (which made extracting the bone difficult). The rice and chick peas were pretty decent and the mixed vegetables were predictable. The roti bread was good. The restaurant itself is a little dingy but the woman who runs the place is nice. If you live in Baytown, give it a try, if you live anywhere else, it's not particularly worth the drive. Pros: Decent Service Cons: Greasy, Dingy and Dark, Poor Food Preparation more
