Food is good but the service is usually bad. I used to not care too much because Mediterranean food is my absolute favorite, but a few days ago I called in to order food so they could make it in advance, it was 8pm on a week day and they were not busy (I asked)... The answer I got was: we don't take reservations. I said I am not making one. They said they could not place my order in advance because that was like making a reservation and that they were a first come first serve restaurant. I said that that was okay with me, that if when I got there (10 min walk) they were (by some miracle) full... I would either wait or take my food home. They still said NO! I passes by there after I hanged up and they had only 2 tables used! I email them and the answer by the owner was the same! more

The food is outstanding, but wow I could just get an appetizer and be stuffed. DO NOT come here if you are not hungry and/or with a lot of people and do not over order, no matter how yummy everything looks. Just come back! more

Dropped in for a quick bite as I had a hankering for some chicken kabab and falafel. Unfortunately I wasnt able to order a couple of falafel along with an order of kabab. more

Not a good time at Nicholas restaurant 8/26/2011

I've been to Nicholas restaurant half a dozen times and came to realize over the last few visits that the service stinks. Some of their food is good but my dessert was a pile of liquid where the cream had separated. Their desserts have consistantly failed at Nicholas. But, with the lousy wait-staff and less than sanitary conditions I will never return. Sincerely, E.Hubbard more

Love Nicholas, Yummy, Generous Portions, Great Value!! 3/21/2011

Oh, boy! We looove the food at Nicholas! It is excellent! Eating there has never been disappointing, ever. The chicken kebabs and the lamb with rice platter are out of this world! The pita is humongous and is served piping hot, family style! My husband, daughters and I are fans of Nicholas. It's great value for money too, the portions are generous! I highly recommend it. more

Major Disappointment 10/5/2010

We are from out of town and have eaten here before, but something has changed. The little salad that came along with our dinner, unfortuantely, was the best part of the meal. My husband had the gyros, and he was drooling for it...thinking how yummy it was the last time, packed full of meat, etc......NOT this time. It had a few slivers of meat and lots of Pita wrapped around the scant amount of meat. What a disappointment. Doubt whether we would even go back. more

The best humus I have ever had! 9/24/2010

Super food and and a super value. I can't get over that they make everything at one place. Almost too good to be true, Cheap food and authentic (I think) as I have ever had. more

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR HUNGER HERE. 6/7/2010

This was such a disappointment!! I drove a couple friends up from Vancouver WA to check this place out, for a great friendly dinner, and the food was horrible. It was embarrassing. I have always laughed, because Gordon Ramsey says never eat at a restaurant with pictures on the menu, and when we sat down I leaned over to my husband and made a little joke, knowing, hoping the food was good. I have never really met a middle eastern dish I didn't really enjoy. Boy was I wrong! We ordered Kabbah and an eggplant dish... and it was practically dog food. Sloppy, disgusting piles!! Not to mention the waitress must have been blind, or just dumb, to see that we barely touched the food, and were NOT taking it to go, but had nothing to say about it. I guess they are used to people ordering food and not really eating it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY AT THIS PLACE!~ NOTE:::We were at the recently turned from Arabian Breeze to Nicholas restaurant. WHAT A DUMP. The decorations are falling off the walls, its SUPER dirty, and incredibly uncomfortable. Never again, to ANY of their restaurants. My ONE STAR RATING OF ""Eh"" was required. I give them zero stars. Pros: NONE. Cons: Food, service, atmosphere, cleanliness more

Not bad, Very busy, Small accommodations 4/7/2010

I'm here to review the New Gresham Location. It isn't up on here yet. I had seen the ""COMING SOON"" sign for over a year, and it finally opened! I couldn't wait to try it. It was a good thing my daughter and I got here early for lunch because the place soon filled up and had a line out the door. I'm not sure if it's because it's new or not. The staff was very nice, especially the guy Handling the drinks. He made my 2yr old a fresh kiwi shake and she guzzled it in about 2 minutes. We ordered a falafel plate for an app, and they were defiantly not the best I've had. I think they make them ahead of time and then nuke them. I ordered some kind of sandwich, resembling a gyro. It was good. Nothing spectacular but i would come again. I looked around at other plates and the main dishes were huge! Unless you have a big appetite i would share! The place is quaint but very cramped. The waiters are all going back in forth through one small path and that is where you have to walk too. Also the bathroom is back behind the waiter station on the way to the kitchen so you have to inch back there too. Other then this, i liked it and I would come back here again. Pros: nice staff, nice atmosphere, great kiwi shake! Cons: cramped more

Yeah for 2 more Locations 1/18/2010

Great restaurant. I often order their food to go when I work late. It is great fuel for the brain. I ate here the other day and was pleased to see they will be adding 2 new locations. I am so glad to here about this, as the wait for lunch can be brutal. Pros: Cheap, Good Cons: Long Wait more

Rude Staff. 8/4/2009

I just tried to place an order with the girl working there over the phone, and she hung up on me. Twice. She didn't even wait for me to finish talking before she scolded me for not telling them that I wanted the order in 45 minutes rather than 15 at the beginning of my call (My bad. I know). She then promptly hung up on me with a sarcastic ""thanks!"". I was left a bit dumbfounded... and completely put out at her attitude. I then called to cancel it in favor of a friendlier, closer middle eastern restaurant... and she hung up on me again. I'm not picky...it seems like it from this review. But this was just ridiculous, rude service. Not coming here for a while. Pros: Great food. Cons: Rude staff. more

Simply Amazing 7/31/2009

You will sometimes see people lined out the door to this place, but it's because it is GOOD EATS!... So good! I may go right now just thinking about it! Pros: Ask for the baked ""Big Bread"" first thing and a Peach drink. Cons: Smaller than my livingroom & in a Bad Neighborhood more

Maybe good food but overshadowed by ... 7/15/2009

After considering several restaurants for some time, we both happily remembered Nicholas and eagerly went to the location for dinner. It had never disappointed us in the past. This time disappointment slapped us immediately. Wait staff was rude, at times completely ignoring us, other times, just acting as if we were inconveniencing them and we were a pain to be served. We were not rude just waiting for attitudes to change. The place was not hosting it's usual crowds so we could not attribute it to the regular overwhelming crowds they have to serve. As we further observed the place we noticed the hostess rushing other diners to finish and leave. We also started to notice how unclean the place looked. I realize the ambiance is humble but this was just plain DIRTY! As wait staff cleaned tables with grungy dirty towels, they simply brushed the food off the tables onto the floor. I looked down around the entire restaurant and realized it was everywhere. Is it coincidence that a day later, we are experiencing symptoms of having eaten less than sanitary food? :( Pros: Cheap food Cons: DIRTY place and RUDE wait staff more

Must visit! 4/19/2009

We visit about once a month, and go whenever we want amazing food on the cheap. It has all sorts of review wins posted on their door, and they don't lie! We take friends, and they always come away thoroughly impressed. The ginormous, fresh pitas on the racks are enough to knock your socks off, but every single thing follows as well. Try the Turkish coffee- one serving is more than enough for two people to share. The Mezza plates are amazing, and though I keep wanting to try new things, I keep coming back to the Schwarma sandwich. Too good to pass up- the taste is so good it's spiritual! =) Pros: perfect taste, cheap, never a ""bad"" day Cons: can be pretty packed more

Wonderful 2/23/2009

The food is really good and fresh here. They overwhelm you with pita and you get delicious pita chips on your salad-yum! The baba is really smokey, which took me a while to get used to, but now I love it. They are cash only, so be prepared! more

Yummy for my vegetarian tummy:) 1/15/2009

I was taken to this restaurant on a date a few years ago, and I've been going back regularly ever since. Yes, the space is small and the service leaves a little to be desired, but they've got great food. I've never had a problem with snotty/indifferent service either; everyone's always been real nice to me when i've dined there. Their falafel is perfectly crispy on the outside, and softly chewy on the inside. The veggie kabobs over the uniquely seasoned yellow rice are perfectly marinated; the tabouli has a nice fresh parsley taste. I have dreams about their hummus, and the giant warm pita that comes with it. A waitress was kind enough to slide me a hefty sample of their rice pudding, after i'd been gushing to her about how much we like the restaurant. And I always forget that they do take-out orders, which is incredibly convenient! I only wish that A) the space was bigger.......B)that they took debit cards! get with the times......and C)that they served booze! What is that about, anyways? Every time I've been there I've wished I was enjoying a frosty micro brew with my kabobs. Pros: amazing, simple and good food. try the falafel! Cons: no booze, cash or check only, small space, the long wait you sometimes endure. more

Good food.. 12/17/2008

Very nice restaurant and great food. I wish they would do more on the ambiance front and also try to reduce the wait times. Looks like the restaurant is doing very well because of the amazing flavorful food. But, I sincerely wish the place has some more decor. Pros: Food, Parking, Vegetarian food Cons: Ambience, Decor more

Amazing! If a resauraunt can keep me coming back for over 8 years like this, it deserves 5 stars!!! 7/7/2008

Before my husband and I were married a friend brought us to nicholas' over 8 years ago and it's still my favorite restauraunt to date. I love the food as always and have turned many friends onto the experience. Ya it's small but I think that's part of the experience they're trying to capture and be quaint and family like. I think the people who gave them bad ratings have issues with their taste buds, or are maybe just cranky. Iv'e never once had a bad experience and will continue to go for years to come. Pros: Great prices, excellent food, friendly employees Cons: parking only on street more

Great food, but no room to eat it 6/22/2008

I LOVE THIS PLACE, my fave in Portland, the food is really great and it's cheap (most of the menu is under $10 and you get a lot of it). It's very small though, it's hard to get in, and then when you do you're eating elbow to elbow with some stranger, not for the full figured people! Pros: Yummy food Cons: restaurant size more
