Best Bagels 9/12/2011

I started going here 20 years ago because of all the blue ribbons they won from the late Marvin Zindler for having one of the cleanest kitchens in Houston. (I sure miss Marvin and his blue ribbons now, they were such an honor to win . Sure wish Channel 13 would get a new reporter to try and fill those shoes.) The bagel shop is kosher, with bagels, challah and baileys (?) and toppings and spreads for sale. One may dine in the non-kosher dining room and I have found the food very good and the ambiance reminds me of NYC, in a nice way. They are one of the few places were one can buy a true salt bagel, my favorite, more

Best Blueberry Pancakes!!!!! 8/2/2011

Great bagel shop & awesome cranberry muffin!!!! But the best kept secret is breakfast served in the tiny cafe. Also, the chicken and tuna salads at lunch are very good too. The coffee is strong enough for a man...Always expect a wait on Sat & Sun mornings. Located in one of the few bright spots of SW Houston. more

Delicious bagels and well.... everything else too! 3/21/2010

This is my favorite mom and pop shop in Houston. I have been going here for almost my entire life and the quality and friendliness of the establishments hasn’t changed at all! You can either take your warm, freshly made, bagels to go or you can sit and dine at the restaurant next door. With such a variety of freshly baked goods it is often hard to choose what you want to chow down on. While the plain bagels are definitely a must, you have to come early in the morning for the cinnamon raisin bagels or the sundried tomato bagels. If you are not a bagel person, try their challah (bread); a warm, fluffy, braided, egg bread. The attached restaurant serves a wide variety of traditional breakfast items as well as a menu full of kosher items as well. Pros: Hot, fresh, and inexpensive Cons: Can't think of any more

Best bagels EVER!!!! 5/6/2008

Teeny-tiny shop located in SW Houston. It's been here since the begining of time, and I don't think anything has changed. The bagels are made on site, hot and fresh. Potatoe pancakes are the bomb! I've had both breakfast and brunch there. I've had the 'triple play' and loved every bite. They let you pick three types of salad, ie, tuna, chicken, egg, liver, whitefish, etc. My daughter loves the silver dollar pancakes. You can bring anyone here and they will find something they like. The only drawback, is because it is so old, the cafe is tiny. REAL TINY. My advise, wait for a booth, and don't go if you are in a hurry. Def. worth the wait. Pros: Yummy food, best bagels ever, good selection Cons: tiny cafe, tiny tables, need fresh fruit and yogurt on the menu (just a suggestion) =) more

Authentic New York Jewish Deli 1/17/2008

This as close as you can get in Houston to a truly authentic New York Jewish deli. I brought my mother here and she loved it. I recommend the chop liver and fresh baked rye to go. more

You can't beat this place for breakfast 9/7/2006

I've never once had the lunch, but it's got the standards on the menu. What I'm in love with is the breakfasts which are served all day. What I crave are their homefries. With the bagel shop right next door serving up fresh ones throughout most of the day you've got to make sure to either have one with your meal, get is served as your bun or take some home because they're worth it. Their waitresses are tried and true and while they aren't going to take you to another level service wise, they more than get their fair share done on the floor. MMMMmmmmm homefries... Pros: Fast turnaround Cons: Don't go looking to spread out, it's a tightly run dining room floor more

New York Rude? 3/13/2006

I live in the neighborhood and have eaten here numerous times -- purely out of convenience. While the food is good (not exceptional) and the place is clean, the wait staff, if not rude, is certainly indifferent. Don't expect to be greeted with a cheery "good morning" or be asked how your food was. Head's are down and interaction with the customer is held to the bare minimum. Good luck getting a second cup of coffee. This may be NY style; its certainly not Texas style. As I write this, I am cooking breakfast because I sat in a nearly empty restaurant , read two newspaper articles and was never greated, provided with water or coffee or otherwise acknowledged. Every time I eat here, I ask myself why. I won't any more. Do everyone a favor; eat somewhere where they appreciate the business. more

THE best BAGELS in the west 9/27/2002

This is THE place for the best omelettes and bagels west of the Mississippi. THE place to see and be seen on a Sunday for brunch. My one MUST stop for breakfast when I am in Houston. Ed and Jay make it like home for me. Pros: food, service, value Cons: I am in NY :-( more

Editorial
  • It would be hard to find someone who will say a bad word about New York Bagel and it?s not just because it would hurt the feelings of the elderly folk whiling away their afternoons over coffee and Formica tables there. The deli and adjoining bagel shop has been long and well loved for its sassy old school waitresses, dated flower wallpaper and, most of all, its New York style lox, bagels and pastrami with Houston price tags. Servings are not as monstrous as some delis are known for but a plate of crispy latkes and a bowl of matzo ball soup will fill you up all the same.
