The Civil Rights Museum has a lot of history, obviously because the museum is constructed around the hotel at which Dr. King was shot.\r \r The museum has a lot of wonderfully explained exhibits, and it's a good place to bring the family. Inquire about the free day. I don't recall the day, but they have one, as well. more

Great Outing for Adults and Older Kids... 8/23/2006

The National Civil Rights Museum is housed in the old Lorraine Motel- the hotel where Martin Luther King Junior was shot and died. They have removed 1/2 of the hotel and built a very modern museum there and the other half where the assasination took place is still intact, with the room Dr. King spent his last hours and the one "across the hall" set up in a similar fashion as well.\r \r The museum features photos, items from history (including a bus) and lots of things to read on the walls or you will not be sure what you are looking at. It is well put together and the exhibits are really neat. There is a recorded tour that I recommend because it helps you to understand what you are looking at.\r \r I really enjoyed the Dr. King section of the museum, and there is a lot of material relating to the assasination. I would probably have enjoyed the museum more if I had a better study of the Civil Rights Movement and had been familiar with more of the names and stories.\r \r I think it would ap more

History Comes to Life 9/3/2005

Located at the historic Lorraine Motel, the National Civil Rights Museum revives a painful and important history in downtown Memphis. The museum is not just a memorial to Dr. King, but to all civil rights activists. It's packed with information and some very memorable exhibits, like the bus exhibit on the Freedom Rides. The museum is $12 for adults, but it's free on Monday afternoons. If you're a native Memphian, or visiting the city, it's a must-see. more

What an interesting place! 8/21/2005

If you go to Memphis as a tourist you really should visit the National Civil Rights Museum. It is well worth the money! It is the former location of The Lorraine Motel, which is where Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed. This museum is cram packed full of exhibits. There is so much to see here. I thought it was extremely interesting and hope to visit again one day. PROS: very interesting, fair price, educational CONS: none more

New Wing - Go Again and Again 10/2/2002

My friend and I were lucky enough to be in Memphis on vacation at the same time the new wing that incorporates James Earl Ray's boarding house was being dedicated. We explored both the new wing and the main wing and let me tell you this was the most powerful museum I have ever been to. The staff was very friendly and informative and the exhibits - the way they followed history lines from the early 1800's to present time - were spectacular. The tourbooks reccommend giving yourself 1-2 hours. I reccommend much more then that if you want to be able to explore everything. more

I visited this museum for the first and only time back in 1994, and it still sits in my memory as one of the best museum experiences of my life (and I've travelled pretty extensively). more

UNBELIEVABLE 5/28/2002

I visited this museum with my church in March-02. I did not know what to expect and was totally blown away. I can't explain the emotions that overcame me. The displays, writings, pictures, the whole museum is beyond description. This is a highly, highly recommended museum to visit. more
