31st and Cool 12/16/2002

31st and McGee is defintely the coolest corner in Kansas City. With the Empire Room on one side and the Velvet Dog on the other. The Empire Room is loungey and loud especially on Fri/Sat nights. Young, hip crowds mingle above the trance music in 2 main rooms. Pass thru the tufted doors to the backroom - a dimly lit bar/movie theatre. Round retro booths face the theatre screen that plays anything from avant guarde movies to music videos. Oh yeah, the friendly bartenders mix up some pretty mean drinks. Stick to the drinks though, the food is an afterthought. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Seemingly lit entirely by candles and chandeliers, it's like everyone is in soft focus within this art-deco enclosure. Of course, for this young, pretty crowd, it's hardly necessary. Seating is limited, but if you're lucky enough to nab one of the plush booths, it feels like you're royalty in a swinging kingdom.

    The Draw

The drinks are high-dollar, made with care and well-worth the expense. The Empire martini is made with Bombay Sapphire gin splashed with orange and grapefruit juices. A screening room lies just beyond the double doors of the main room. Free movies flicker as cocktail sippers order their next drink at the bar inside. Popcorn is forgone here with viewers munching on an eclectic menu of appetizers including pizza, jerk chicken, vegetable spring rolls and albatross.
