Best darn little Restaurant!! 7/26/2003

IF you're looking for a pretentious, overpriced restaurant with obnoxious, overbearing waiters and exhorbitant prices ----then STOP ! Don't go to Moki's--you'll be sorely disappointed! The menu is divinely scrumptuous and sure to please 99.5% of taste buds from the die-hard sushi fan to the sushi virgin----at last a restaurant that can truly satiate both meat-eaters and vegetarians alike! Best of all ..here's a Dining Experience that will not butcher your checkbook. The only thing more diverse than the menu is the clientele! On any given night you will truly see a slice of Bernal heights...families and singles, gay and straight all crowding into Moki's.... I could rave on and on about this modest little restaurant... the hip, young good-looking staff... the surfer-south pacific island themed decor with surfboards and wooden masks. If you go, be sure to check out the gorgeous back patio! Moki's is addictive! Pros: inexpensive, great decor, sassy food Cons: can be crowded more

Solidly Mediocre and Amateurish Sushi 7/22/2003

Moki's mediocre sushi doesn't live up to the hype. Decent quality, kinda fresh, but nothing extroardinary to justify the long wait. Their fusion-y rolls fell victim to excess: a roll w/ unagi, cream cheese, and mango had so much cream cheese it overpowered the other flavors. Likewise, a roll with crab, mint, and papaya was completely overpowered by the mint. I'd suggest a lighter touch with these non-trad ingredients. The spider roll was vile; the tempura crab was very greasy, overly fried, and *not* fresh, which isn't how real tempura is prepared! The riptide, with shrimp wrapped in unagi, was good, but the unagi's large burn-marks from over-grilling tells of sushi chefs not taking their art seriously. Nigiri was decent but cut/prepared hastily, not w/ the meticulous precision of better quality sushi places. With superior Bay Area sushi joints like Nagano and Koryo, don't waste your time with Moki's. more

""that was gooooood"" 6/13/2003

moki is a secret and that's part of the beauty of it. best selection of creative and YUMMY rolls in the city! decent prices. if you have a group request the backyard patio - it's your own little world!! Pros: great selection, great atmosphere Cons: crowded, service can be slow more

Moki's is the bomb! 5/19/2003

I have been to Moki's A LOT and it has never let me down. I have brought vegetarian friends and fishing eating pals alike. Great place if you chums are both. The rolls are some of the most innovative that I have seen. They are always fresh and perfect. The sides are great too -- seaweed salad, edamame with big kosher salt, the grilled asparagus rocks, the corn fritters are filling, but tasty, and the wasabi mashed potatoes are excellent. The Bernal Roll is crispy and so flavorful, everything really is great. The service is fair. Good nights, bad nights. The expanded back area is good to share some appetizers and sake before you are seated. Well worth the trip! more

Decent Food, Good Service 5/12/2003

I thought the food here is pretty decent by San Francisco standard, but the strong point here is the service. The price is a bit on the expensive side considering you do not get rice or soup with the sashimi special which costs $17.95! Vancouver, Seattle and LA all have better sushi than SF. more

Moki's is great! 1/10/2003

Really yummy and pretty large pieces fish! Very comfortable and good service! If I were to give them any feedback I'd say that they need to cut back on the rice they put with their Nigiri (we usually shave some off before eating the piece) and only complaint I have is that it sometimes smells like fish a little more than I'd like to smell going into a sushi restaurant. But other than that it is truly a find and we're psyched to live so close to such excellent sushi! more

The Best! Need I say more?!? 12/19/2002

If you love inventive, non-traditional Japanese Sushi, this is the place. They seem to have blended some wonderful Hawaiian flavors, mango and macadamia come to mind, with traditional raw sashimi. The place is small so a wait may be in order, but what good sushi place in the city takes reservations?!? Finally the first time I ordered about 6 specialty rolls for 2 people and the waitress said it would probably be too many. Too Many?!? Never Pros: Great Sushi Rolls, Huge portions, Great people more

Excellent Food 8/9/2002

Moki offers excellent food and service. Some of the best rolls are the Riptide, Ecstasy, Drum and many, many more. This restaurant is normally full, so definitely call to see how long the wait would be. The food will be worth the wait. One more special I forgot to include. For appertizer, try the Baby-Back Rib and for dessert without any doubt the Banana Lumpia, these both will sent you and your companion straight to food heaven. Pros: superb food, execellent service, friendly staff Cons: not open for lunch, need more tables more

Yummy! 8/9/2002

Moki's Sushi is the best kept secret. The sushi is fantastically fresh, the rolls are fun and creative and the sea weed salad is the best in town. Best thing about Moki's (besides the menu) is the friendly staff and attentive chefs & owners. more

Fresh is the Word 7/29/2002

I've been eating at Moki's for almost four years now (I live in the neighborhood), and I never get tired of their food! The fish is super fresh, the rolls are tasty and creative, and the staff is helpful and friendly. Sure there are tons of other sushi bars in the city, but Moki's is the original for great fusion rolls in a cozy environment. Pros: Easy parking more

a favorite! 7/11/2002

One of the best. We go there often, and while we've hit a few ""ok"" nights, most of the time, its amazing. Great edamame, great miso - fantastic sushi. We keep checking out neew restaurants and always return to Moki's. Great for non-sushi eating folks too. Try the Banana Limpia! Pros: back patio, creative rolls, high quality Cons: waiting more

Worth The Visit 5/20/2002

I love to drive over to Moki's, easy to park and not a long wait for a table. The sushi is great and the staff is friendly and attentive- jsut a good overall meal experience. more
