I've been shopping at Pintchik since 1995 and I'm now putting together my fourth apartment with their help. Though it usually takes a minute or two to find a salesperson to ask a ...

the glowing reviews here are shills. look at the commentors' review history, many many of the 5 star givers only have one review, and its for Pintchik. Really? when were you so...

worst in the neighborhood 5/29/2008

As a longtime resident of Park Slope, I've been to Pintchik quite a few times over the years. The sales people are reliably lazy and rude. They seem to make a sport of mocking customers, especially those who ask for help. Stay away if possible! Pros: conveniently located near Bergen St subway Cons: nasty staff, overpriced merch more

Simply wonderful. They go above and beyond, the extra mile!! 5/23/2008

I LOVE this store. They have everything you need and more. My husband has taken care of several projects in the house and there is not a thing Pinckik has not been able to help him with. It does not matter with what questions you come, they always get creative with you. Today I was even helped by Matt Pintchik himself. He took the time to find out what I needed and went even a step further to help me assemble something I was having trouble with. There is no other store that provides this kind of service. more

rude, impatient salespeople 1/26/2008

I've been here several times and repeatedly have found the employees to be rude, impatient, patronizing, and not helpful (except for the female cashiers, who have actually corrected wrong information given to me by a salesperson). I usually like to support a mom-and-pop operation, but I won't shop here anymore. Pros: Better selection than most places in the immediate neighborhood. Cons: If you need help with anything, you may find the serivce wanting. more

Old fashioned good service, not just a pasted smile. 1/11/2008

Fist of all if you are an idiot or rude the guys at Pintchik, they will tell you so. That said; I go there for everything I need from a hardware store. They few times they didn't have what I needed they gave me the number to who did!\r I have also had 14 keys of all sorts made there and the one time a key was bad they replaced it on the spot and joked with me, along with an apology. \r One man in particular stands out. I believe his name is Matthew Pintchik. He simply is one of the nicest, most ""real"" people you'll ever have the pleasure to work with and how he relates to his employees is also a treat. I often ask my myself why don't more companies do the same.\r Let me add one more thing. If you have a problem with this store you should look in a mirror and realize you are probably looking at a - how do I say... not nice person. Pros: don't charge for silly things Cons: no parking that I know of more

Pintchik - a waste of time, and a loss of $$$ 12/9/2007

Overpriced, overpriced, overpriced!! Did I mention overpriced? I'll be heading into the city shortly to Bed Bath and Beyond and the Container Store, where things are **affordable** more

corporate mentality disguised as a mom-and-pop store 12/9/2007

I was warned against shopping at Pintchik by friends in Park Slope. They claimed the store is overpriced, that the staff tries to get you to overspend, and that the items can be found more cheaply at nearby Target... but I wanted to go anyway, hoping to support a smaller store. Sadly, my friends were all right. The people here are resoundingly rude. In the paint section section, 4 staff members lounged about, and I had to ask 3 people to help me before someone even acted like I was there! After discussing my needs, the saleswoman SWORE I needed to spend nearly $50 in expensive supplies in addition to their most expensive paint ($40 a gallon!), even though I said I had a budget and didn't need the expensive stuff. It was as though the saleswoman wasn't even listening to what I was saying. Offended, I left, and I will never return. Don't be fooled! more

A five star Pinchik experience 12/8/2007

I was reminded how much I love Pinchik on a recent shopping expedition. The store always has everything I want - in this case Bondo, some stain, a dutch bolt lock, a padlock, a box to store some photos in, packing tape and snow melting salt - and I can't imagine anyone in the world who would prefer a trip to Home Depot or Loews. \r \r If you phrase your first question correctly, and (by chance) to the right person, you can score your own personal shopper and the trip becomes a breeze. I am completely allergic to, and bored by, all home improvement projects but Pinchik makes the experience begin (at least) a lot easier. Unbelievably, at the end of this particular trip, the man behind the counter noted how much stuff I had and asked me if I'd like a hand carrying everything to the car, and a bloke from the back room helped me across the road with the heavy bag of snow melter.\r \r You can't fault that. more

Hardware Help Made Easy 12/6/2007

My wife and I are moving into a new apartment and went back to Pintchik because of their excellent paint selection. They were exceedingly helpful and highly knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics covering everything from primers to window gates. There's a real neighborhood family feel to a store that has seen it all. If they didn't have closing hours, we might still be there. We'll definitely be back for anything we need to get done right. They even have free popcorn and a massage chair. Excellent! Pros: Lots of options, friendly people, a hardware bonanza Cons: not open 24 hours (that would be awesome!!!) more

Pintchik Incorporated 9/1/2007

I was new to Park Slope, moving into a very old brownstone and in need of a lot of help and advice on just about every thing to do my renovations. We hired a contractor to do the major structural work but my wife and I decided to do the fine work such as painting on our own. The staff @ Pinchik was Great! They got us the right primers, paints brushes and tools to do a wonderful job on our house. They helped with many other suggestions such as getting a power drill with screwdriver bits to save time on work, a 7 foot ladder for painting the high ceilings and a bucket of salt and snow shovel for winter side walk cleaning... In the three years I have lived in Park Slope their advice on my home improvement projects has always been valueble and time saving. I highly recomend Pinchik's. more

Great Paint Buying Experience 9/1/2007

Three years ago, my wife and I moved into a new place and painted all the rooms except the bathroom. We decided it was time to finish the job (as we have bunch of guests coming over for a party soon).\r \r We decided on a sea and sky theme for the bathroom (light blue / dark blue plus clouds). Going into Pintchik, we had a bunch of questions:\r 1) Did we need primer?\r 2) What should we do about painting the steampipe?\r 3) How could we get a nice cloud effect?\r \r Our helper was super-friendly and spent about a half hour answering our questions, showing us how to achieve a tranlucent looking cloud, and making sure we had the right supplies.\r \r Lastly, he helped us save money - by figuring out which brand and the right quantity to buy.\r \r Did I mention that the mix custom paint colors on the spot.!! You just pick the colors you want, they have hundreds of color selectons on these strips of paper, and they mix in the store for you.\r \r In short, Pintchiks turned buying paint in super-fun event. I highly recommend them.\r \r Pros: great service, expert advice, great selection, fun atmosphere more

Very bad service - buyer beware! 7/29/2007

The store does have a good location and nice selection, but their service staff is usualy useless and helpless. This is not an isolated incident. We realy gave these guys a few chances, tried to support a local establishment rather than some chain store. Three cases in point:\r We tried to get advice on drills, and the salesperson just read the little labels in the diplay out loud. Really informative. After a minute he lost his patience and gave us a sour face, and basicaly just wantd to sell something to get rid of us. Antoher time we were looking for a shower curtain rod, and had to convince another salesperson that we know it's in the back, because we saw it the other day. The guy denied that they have such a thing, and we had to drag him there and show him. Then he told us the rod was 6' long, when it was actually 5', so we had to come back the next day to return it. On another occasion we tried to get a refund for a lousy $8 and they messed it up and never gave us that money. They always get the change wrong, or they charge you wrong prices - always check the slip! I say, let them struggle a bit, maybe they'll come to their senses and improve. I'm boycotting them until 2008. Pros: location is convenient, okay selection Cons: very bad service, and they often make mistakes during checkout more

3 words: The ratzapper 7/21/2006

I had rodent problems, meaning they were in my apartment. The owner of Pintchik sold me a product and gave me his home phone to call in the event it didn't work. I exterminated 9 in the 1st 24 hours. I sealed the holes and haven't seem them since! I call him just to tell him it was the best purchase EVER. No mess, they get zapped dropped into the trash and the thing keeps zapping. Never need to see or touch the dead rodent. I only shop their on principal now. They really look out for your best interest. Pros: Looked out for the customer's interest more

Hardware Heaven 6/10/2002

Striking a happy medium between the local little hardcore hardware store and the user-friendly mega-mart full of dazed Yupsters drifting through with This Old House mags in hand, Pintchik's manages to have a pretty good version of most everything you need for home repairs and fix-it-ups. Staff, once you catch them, is generally knowledgeable and competent, if not always immediately forthcoming. Plus, in a touch of surrealism worthy of Ionesco himself, there's free popcorn. more
