On February 4th 2012 my wife and parked at a lot on 3300 South State Street in South Salt Lake City. My wife went into the shops and I ran over to grab us some food at a Chinese Food Place adjacent. We weren't gone from our car 20 minutes and it was gone. As any normal person would do we called the police to report it stolen. While we were waiting several of the shops employees came out and were wondering what was going on. We mentioned to them that our car was gone and they said it was probably towed because they had seen tow trucks in the area recently. They gave us the name on one of the trucks so we called to see if it had been towed. Sure enough they towed our vehicle. I called and spoke to Corey Schafer at Legacy Towing and asked why they towed our vehicle Corey said they had video of my wife and I leaving the car and they had every right to tow it. When I mentioned that my wife didn't leave the parking lot shops in the area he said they had her on video leaving the area. I asked Corey if we could see the video because I knew he was lying. He said that he didn't have to give us the video.
After conversations of going nowhere with Corey about how our car was towed illegally by Legacy Towing the Salt Lake Police Department showed up. The officer confirmed that the car was indeed towed. He also mentioned that this was a huge a problem with this towing company. They had towed 23 cars in a 48 hour time frame. The officer said that he had had enough of towing company illegally towing cars and told us the best thing to do would be to file complaints against the company. He mentioned it was a ""Civil Matter"" but that he felt so stongly that what the towing company was doing wrong that he would escalate the issue at SLPD to his superiors to try and prevent this from happening in the future.
This all happend on a Saturday and of course towing companies make there money on the weekends by storing cars and charging storage fees. Our only option was to go to the lot and speak to someone regarding the issue. We showed up at the lot of Legacy Towing at: 4255 S 300 W Ste 7 in Murray, Ut. Conveniently Legacy Towing did not have an employee there that could help us. There was a guy there from ASAP Towing that said he could give us our car if we paid the amount in full. The amount on the bill was $265 to tow our car 10 blocks and store it for an hour. Obviously we were irate. Our car was towed illegally in the first place and now no one from LEgacy Towing was available to speak to us. We were told to try back in a couple days and that the owner Schafer Magana may talk to us. We were also told that if we left the car and disputed the charges we would incur additional daily storage fees.
As expected we have yet to get a returned phone call. After doing some research on this company I am not the surprised even the slightest amount. They have dozens of negative reviews on every website that their named popped up on. I will continue my efforts to make people aware of this terrible company and their illegal practices.
