We went to this place a couple of weeks ago and it was excellent, I had the Jambalaya and then had the Bread Pudding for desert. We just went back on Friday night and they are no longer there, anybody know what has happened and if the chefs have gone somewhere else? Pros: Best Bread Pudding I have found Cons: now closed more

Getting better all the time 2/7/2008

Don't get me wrong, I've eaten at Lagniappe about a dozen times in the last two years. I was compelled to write this review after after the prompt, delicious lunch I had today. Alberta St. is somewhat of a minor destination, business fluctuates and sometimes service and quality does the same thing. Pros: Sazerac - great cocktails more

Our favorite by far 12/1/2007

I just can't say enough good about Lagniappe. Their food is made from the heart... no mass produced imitation cajun food here. What you'll find is southern comfort food done right, and they genuinely care about the product that they put on your plate. Don't hesitate to ask about any item on the menu, they're more than happy to answer your questions and chat with you for a while. There isn't a bad item on their menu, and their specials are outstanding as well. And definitely save room for dessert! Pros: Good food, good service, friendly staff, love the chef! more

Po-boy's done right 6/14/2007

I lived in New Orleans for a few years, and the po-boys are the food I miss the most. Lagniappe does em right. They are more expensive than $3.50 at that corner store on Royal St, but they're just as tasty, and so big that I usually order the 1/2 po-boy + one side order deal. Add an Abita, and it's like NOLA all over again... except I'm not sweating to death ;) more

Easily the best po' boys in Portland, hands downs. 6/11/2007

Cajun, New Orleans or whatever you're not going to find a better po' boy in Portland than the ones over at Lagniappe. There big, delicious and ""fully dressed"", just like the ones I find back home. Technically I guess I'm Cajun being born in Lafayette, La. though I've to New Orleans more than enough to know what a po' boy is . Lagniappe has them and they are good! The shrimp, oysters or crawfish are loaded on and fried to perfection. I've also had the jambalaya with shrimp added and it was as equally tasty, same flavors and spices as down home. I'm not sure were the one reviewer got ""skimpy"" from, the numerous times we've been there was one or two boxes needed after dinner! I've also lived in the Alberta Arts neighborhood for a couple years and Last Thursdays are a busy time for every business that night. It's a crazy good time, a little like New Orleans. So relax, enjoy your Hurricane or Abita Beer and take it all in. Pros: Authentic southern food, friendly service. Cons: No more Abita Amber in Portland! more

This is New Orleans, not Cajun! 6/11/2007

Good service and even better food. A true taste of New Orleans. The crawfish tails are a must have as an apetizer and anything ending with Po boy will tickle your taste buds. The newly added Fried chicken is amazing. Tasty strips of breast that I believe are pan fried because they are not covered with grease left me wanting more, but the serving sizes are so generous I will get my fix from my leftovers. Do your best to save room for dessert, the bread pudding melts in your mouth. The table side Crystals and Tony Chacheres is a great touch, I don't cook without them. more

The Big and Tasty Easy 6/11/2007

I am a big fan of this place. I have been to Naw'lens and this is the goods. Big flavors and a great big value for the dollar. All the food is always tasty and very fresh. I have also met the owner Madison and he knows his food , look at the guy, that ain't no rice cakes or Tofu and he will tell you what is the best bet on any given night, but you can never go wrong with BIG OL' SHRIMP PO'BOY. And the cocktails can get you where you need to be, watch out or you might just be yelling ""Where you at""? So get in there , have one of the best meals you can afford in this day and age and ""Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez"" , And my kids love the place , to see my 13 year old daughter mac down a fried oyster Po'Boy is quite cool. Pros: Great value , big portions Cons: Some people just don't get it, so relax have a cocktail and you just might more

at least it's not a bar... 6/10/2007

but if this is new orleans, i'll pass on the visit... Pros: probably pretty romantic when it's hot out... Cons: not enough food for the money... more

Cheap food at expensive prices 5/3/2007

The spinach side was great and the drinks ok. Most everything else I've had was disappointing. From the cheap white rolls they called ""French"" Bread to the hard black eyed peas, it's just plain unbelievable that they expect you to pay $12. for a mayonaise smeared, iceberg lettuce and unripe tomatoed sandwich. Ok, authenticity? Well, I've been to N'Orleans and the flavors are complex. The sauces are delicious, not raw mayo and High school cafeteria pickles. (oh, and this kind of down home cooking is a lot cheaper). Pros: ? Cons: overpriced, over mayonaised sandwiches.... more

Great, Great Po' Boy 3/23/2007

I have never written one of these things before but the meal I had at Lagniappe forced my hand. I ate the oyster po' boy with a side of greens. I've had ""real southern cookin'"" in Portland before and it usually just means that everything is burned and served with corn bread. At Lagniappe everything was fresh and of the best quality from the tomato to the oysters to the delicious bread it came on. The other plus was the amount of oysters I got. Po' boys I've had in the past have maybe three medium sized oysters so not only do you feel like you're getting ripped off but they don't cook right and get all oozy. At Lagniappe, they use extra small oysters dredged in corn meal so they taste like oysters but have a nice little crunch at the same time- and you get scads of em'! Sandwich awesome, greens awsome, great inobtrusive service, go there! Pros: Crazy good food Cons: dunno.... kinda smelled like fresh paint? more

Not bad, but considerable room for improvement 3/17/2007

My wife and I stopped in for our first visit and had lunch. Prompt seating and the waitstaff was attentive. Our meals were served promptly and the hot food was served hot. We were impressed with the buttermilk fried chicken and the fried crawfish, all perfectly cooked with a crunchy batter to hold in the juices. Sadly the restaurant's interpretation of red beans and rice leaves MUCH to be desired. Instead of being creamy and smooth, they were thick and dry, more like refried beans with an overpowering of thyme. Our crawfush salad was fresh and well presented, but too much thyme was used in the vinaigrette dressing, as well. Overal not bad, but not up to New Orleans standards. We'll give them another try one of these days...... more

Always good 3/3/2007

We have dined here several times and have always had great service and amazing food. The test, however was aptly passed on our last experience there. We were joining a large party, (10 people), for a special dinner. I usually shy away from such outings because the experience is often nightmarish and even typically good food, isn't. Pros: Amazing food and service Cons: I'm not there right now! more

True Cajun 3/1/2007

This is a cute little restaurant with great atmosphere and incredible Cajun food. It was very authentic and didn't feel put-on at all. The owner is a sweetheart and talked to us for some time about the restaurant. You MUST TRY the incredible bread pudding dessert. I had heard a lot about it and finally tried it. It was completely worth it and I almost wanted to order another one! The shrimp po-boy was also incredible. If you want great Southern food in Portland, come here. Pros: Nice live music, best bread pudding ever Cons: A little drafty and cold more

A little bit of N'awlins in Portland!! 11/1/2006

I had dinner 2 nights ago and enjoyed it so much I went back for lunch today. A big portion of Jambalaya was served steaming hot, moist and flavorful with nice chunks of chicken and Andouille sausage and topped with chopped green onions. A bottle of Crystal hot sauce on each table adds to the authenticity. Fried Shrimp Po'Boy was huge, overflowing with shrimp on a nice french roll with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Hush Puppies are the size of a racketball, served steaming hot, moist and tasty. Could have used a little honey or some kind of dipping sauce, but I made do with the hot sauce. Cole slaw was tart and tangy with a little bite of heat. Overall the portions are very generous- make suere you come hungry. Lousiana Abita TurboDog beer on tap. Yeah!! Pros: Generous portions, nice food presentation, served piping hot. Authentic. more

The Best Cajun in Portland 9/18/2006

We love this restaurant!!!!! It is nice to sit outside in the summer and enjoy the sun while having a leisurely lunch or dinner. The service is always good and the food is better than that. I love the Community Coffee and just about everything on the menu that I've had, especially the pulled pork sandwich heaped with the spicy cole slaw. My only complaint would be that Muffelattas are not regularly on the menu. They are beyond good when available. Pros: Excellent coffee, excellent service, excellent prices Cons: Muffelattas should be on the menu! more

best shrimp poboy's in town 9/11/2006

nice in and outside dinning great for large group's of people good plac to take the hole family Pros: foods alway's good Cons: might be alittle price for me but I still eat their more

Best PoBoy I've ever had 9/7/2006

I lived in New Orleans for a short time too, so I've got a bit of experience there. The real taste came today though when I took a friend there who had lived in NO for five years and he agreed with me that it was better then anything we had over there. AWESOME. Great service, too. Pros: the huge and amazing Po Boys!!!, service Cons: not sure. patio is a little boring? more

Abita Beer No Need to Say Any More 9/6/2006

Any place that has Abita on Tap will forever be a perfect place for me. If the scale could go any higher I would. Let me begin by agreeing that this place truly is a gem within the NW chaos of diverse restaurants. Since I have moved up here I have been all around and looked for Abita Beer (abita. c o m). When I sat down and the waiter told us that they had an Amber Lager, Abita I only think I could describe my reaction as sheer awe and amazement. Once I pinched myself and confirmed I had to focus on the menu. Which by the way is the same for Lunch as Dinner (but they do have some great Happy Hour specials). A couple of things I have to state. It is impossible to re-create the food that comes out of the restaurants in New Orleans anywhere else but in New Orleans. With that being said these guys really have the technique and recipes down to a prefect art. If there was anyplace in New Orleans I could compare this to it would be Mothers on Poydras St. in the CBD. It was good I enjoyed the Oyster PO boy (Made with Washington Oysters not Gulf) the bread was the closest thing I have seen to NO French bread since I have been up here. I would recommend this place to anyone who I willing to take me for a couple of beers. Or someone who wanted to know what the food is like down in the NO south. We had a great time, awesome atmosphere and a great location. Right in the heart of the Alberta District, A 10 with lots of good gris gris. Really nice court yard has the authentic French quarter feel. You got to check it out! Pros: Great Authetic NO Food prep and recipes Cons: With a courtyard like the one they have it should be a constant party. Oh and they don't have a fountain with fire in the middle. more
