this place is awesome! 5/11/2010

I'm not sure what experiances the other reviewers had, but mine have been amazing all the times I've been there. Its a cute little place that has a lot of personality. There are items not on the menu that you can order, like the heaven and hell roll which makes your taste buds go crazy. the wait staff was very kind and helpful. I would definately recommend this p ace. I already have to all my friends! more

Won't be back 10/23/2009

Service was slow and we had the same experience with the workers all being at the sushi bar being loud and joking around while we sat there waiting for service. I ordered the lobster tempura and it was terrible. My friend, who is huge on sashimi , could not even eat her sashimi plate. She said it did not taste fresh and smelled bad. We left and paid( maybe we shouldn't have) without really eating anything. It was our first and last time there. Pros: The Miso was good Cons: Everything else was bad more

So so food, horrible people 8/23/2008

The dining experience at Koi Kawa was horrible. Upon entry we were asked to wait for a table, but then no one came to seat us for at least 5 minutes. I understand that a restaurant is going to be busy on Friday night, but they were majorly understaffed. We finally were put at a table BUT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY AVAILABLE MENUS FOR US!!! A waiter finally came to the table with that deer in headlights look on her face, she was completely overwhelmed, which made us a bit uncomfortable. She got our drink order and wandered off (we still didn't have any menus), and finally returned after another 10 minutes or so. I managed to get up myself and snag some to go menus from one of the two sushi chefs, whom i couldn't help but notice were both drinking beer and taking sake bombs with the customers sitting at the sushi bar (at least someone was enjoying themselves), but after we finally ordered our sushi at least i had an explanation as to why we did not get our food for another hour. Pros: fresh fish Cons: horrible service from the kitchen and waitstaff, its a dodgy restaurant more

Best Sushi in San Antonio, great view and good service 7/16/2008

My husband and I just dined here Saturday night. Immediately got seated and had a great view of the Park next door. Prices were reasonable and the service was prompt and helpful. My favorite was the special Sara roll, which was divine. My husband loved the tuna sashimi so much, he had to get a second order. We also loved the special shrimp tempura roll. Overall, an excellent experience. We will definitely visit again soon! Pros: Food, ambience, view, service Cons: miso soup was too salty more

great food, horrid service 6/28/2008

Dined around 8:30-9pm. Food was very fresh and wonderful, no complaints. Service? What service! There were empty tables everywhere and still had to wait 5 minutes for a refill or 10 minutes for the check. Food also comes slow, but that is to be expected.. be sure to order a quick appetizer. more

best and most affordable sushi in town 3/11/2008

I eat there frequently and at various times of the day and the sushi is always fresh and delicious no matter if you get there 10 minutes before they close. The food, prices and service is always consistly good. more

Watch out for car burglars 3/5/2008

That's a bad part of town, and while parked there for 2 minutes, two people tried breaking in to my truck. I caught them in the act, and they fled, but after reporting it to the Witte Museum security, they said there had been lots of break-ins (thankfully since I got their plate number, I hope something happens). But so far, it seems the parking security is very bad, and the thieves did this at 10:30 in the morning in front of several people who were oblivious, right in front of this Sushi place, while we were trying to visit the Witte Musuem. I don't feel my car is safe there even still. more

horrible fish 4/25/2007

Go ahead and go to this place if you want to be sick. I have been a sushi lover for a while, and have been to other places in San Antonio, but I went here for lunch one day and had a salmon roll that made me horribly sick. Avoid this place. more

Okay, but not great 3/6/2007

I've come to this location twice, the second time only to see if my first impression was wrong. I really did hope for the best. The servers were pretty nice, although a little pushy. The prices are a little high for the quality of the food. I'd recommend Fujiya, Sushi Zushi, or Goro's first. Pros: Pretty view if you have a window seat, good location Cons: Sushi is just ""ok"", prices too high more

Acceptable but not the best 12/18/2006

Visiting San Antonio for a month, I went to over half-a-dozen sushi restaurants. Koi Kawa was above average, but otherwise not memorable. The view was nice, and the atmosphere serene. My waitress was very pleasant and definitely knew her menu well. The sushi selection, however, was a bit puny. Also not the freshest fish I ever had, but definitely NOT bad. That sums it up...not bad. Pros: View Cons: Limited menu more

Very good for my first sushi experience in SA 11/14/2006

I had never been to a sushi restaurant in SA before so my boyfriend wanted to take me. Being from LA, there are many sushi places here so I won't say I was skeptical, but I wasn't expecting it to be as good as the sushi restaurants here. We picked Koi Kawa based on Citysearch reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. It is in a great location overlooking the park and they had a wide variety of sushi and rolls to pick from. My boyfriend is not a sushi eater and he was able to find some cooked rolls that he liked as well. Pros: great view of park Cons: a little hard to find more

Great Sushi but Not Romantic 10/7/2006

One of the best sushi places ive been and ive been to many places. took my girlfriend to eat there thinking it was romantic, but its about as romantic as a burger king. definitely going to go back Pros: Clean, Friendly, Great Sushi Cons: Not Romantic more

SUPER SUSHI 2/8/2006

My favorite place, specially the UNI, that is always FRESH!!! or they out of it. Goes fast. Also try the fried crab........AWSOME. The clams cooked with sake are the best . Everything is great. Pros: everything Cons: far from me more

Not your typical sushi 4/2/2005

Although the food is fresh. The fish is fresh but costly. I really was not impressed with the ambience, slow service, nor the presentation. I had to ask for stronger tea and it still was mediocore, cool, and bitter. more

great sushi! 8/13/2004

my husband and i went to koi kawa for our anniversary. we were a little unsure about what to order but the waitress was very helpful and informative about the dishes and etiquette. our food was delicious and we even ordered more sushi to take home. more

nihonjin 3/4/2003

there was a large group of japanese business men that had entered while we were eating and the sushi chef informed us that they had come in 3 times in the past week while they were in town visiting. They ordered so much food and loved it. if that's not an endorsement, nothing is. Pros: sake, service, quality Cons: cramped more

Great food, Great staff 2/16/2003

Having just moved to San Antonio from Houston, I thought I would never find a great Jap restaurant. Having tried just about every Jap restaurants here in San Antonio, I would have to say Koi Kawas is one of the best! The ""special rolls"" are amazing, the wait staff is nice and helpful, and service is prompt! Pros: Amazing food, Great staff, Prompt service more
