Good drinks and beautiful pastries 5/26/2011

My favorites: ANY fruit smoothies, esp the mango (they used to puree real fruit...but it tastes like they've gone to a canned puree since they changed locations); milk tea (I get it w/boba AND coffee jelly); raspberry tea; lattes (nice and creamy...they use coffee beans from Catalina); ANY cake, esp the fruit cake (light whipped icing w/layers of fruit, I believe it's only available family-sized and requires a pre-order), black forest cake, green tea mousse cake, etc. etc.!! Strong points: drinks & cakes not sickeningly sweet; place is spotless; usually good music; can order in English, Mandarin, and Taiwanese; very efficient service; laidback atmosphere. Weak points: far from my home near Rice U (so we go weekends after a meal in Chinatown to make traffic less of an issue); sometimes customers don't bus their tables before leaving so you might have to do it if you want a table during peak times; can get noisy (espresso machine, people, etc.). more

Will Never Go Here Again 12/25/2010

We bought a coffee rasberry cake costing $13.65. Took it home and it tasted like SOY SAUSE CAKE!!!! Fine, called them, and manager on phone said, sure just bring it back. We brought it back, and they took the cake, didn't give us another, didn't give us a refund, AND DIDN'T GIVE US OUR CAKE BACK!!!!!! We will never go there again. So unprofessional. And it's on CHRISTMAS DAY!!!!! more

EXORBITANT CREDIT CARD FEES 12/18/2010

Their cake is good but their payment policy sucks: BIG TIME. Felt like I was being cheated. Credit Card: Yes. FOR AN EXORBITANTLY LARGE ADDITIONAL FEE"" I had ordered a cake that's tagged as $13.65 in the display case. When I asked if they take credit cards, the lady said that there's a ""discount"" for using cash. It'll be $13.65 if I pay cash and $16.65 if I pay with credit card. W T F ?! $16.65 ?!?! $3 whole dollars (or 22%) more expensive?!?! @#$&!(&#$* So, how is paying with cash actually a ""discount"" when I'm paying the advertised price in the display case?!?!? Geez. If they want to create an incentive for people to pay cash then for goodness sake give an actual discount. Don't tell me I'm getting a ""discount"" when I'm actually paying listed price and having to pay a 22% additional fee if I choose to pay with credit card. It's just wrong. Anyhow, I like their cake but this whole incident just left me real peeved. Probably won't go there again..... so disappointing.... more

Gorgeous mouthwatering desserts 7/7/2010

Large glass paneling with brushed metal studs make up the backdrop to this ultra-hip pastry café on Bellaire Blvd. But the minimalistic, uber-architectural design of this reincarnated Jungle Café is so pristine in its lines and lighting that you almost feel like you’re in a museum rather than a café. You get the “look but don’t touch” feel, not the warm and fuzzies, like the scintillating bakery aromas that normally accompany entry into a pastry shop. Ah well, nevermind the decor. I’m here for the dessert. And the artfully designed dessert confections beckon any dessert-lover like a dog to a bone. The first time I visited, my eyes roved hungrily over the beautifully rendered offerings and almost went into sensory overload. Not only are the pastries pretty, but their descriptions help me understand the meaning of food porn. The descriptions pay homage to every girl’s dessert fantasy. Take, for instance, my final selection: “PRITANIER: coconut dacquoise, mascarpone cream, framboise coulis, white choc mousse, passionfruit cream.” OMG, Yes! YES!!!!” Add a green and pink French macaroon on top and I’m sold for a mere $4.24. All prices shown including tax, so you know exactly how much you’re going to spend. The server says the Mango Mousse and Black Walnut Chocolate cake are the most popular, but it’s my goal to try all the eye candy on display one of these days, no matter how many calories I ingest. Pros: Wonderfully creative patisserie Cons: The modern design is almost *too* sterile more

Nice place 12/15/2009

Pretty nice place. Not crowded as others, comfortable sitting area. Service are nice and also cakes are the best in town. I and my friends like it very much, will go back again. Pros: comfortable, service more

A good pastry shop 1/26/2009

Strongly recommended. Pros: service, quality Cons: parking spaces are limited more

Disappointment followed by dishonesty 12/15/2008

My wife and I were frequent patrons of this establishment. To be fair, the pastries are good and are tailored for those not as fond of super-sweet items. That being said, I have spent my last penny here. We ordered a cake for my daughter's first birthday. The order was placed well in advance for pick-up on September 14, my daughter's birthday. more

Unique pastry shop 7/1/2008

I know them from my friend's wedding. more

I love my wedding cake, awesome 4/2/2008

I recommend it strongly. Pros: nice chocolate work, detail, good price Cons: parking more

Be careful with your important orders! 3/13/2008

While they are usually okay for standard cakes, don't go to them for your wedding or special occasion cakes. If you don't speak Mandarin, it's almost hopeless. We supplied them with a picture and a clear description of what we wanted, and they skipped an important detail from the written order. We ordered and paid for fondant, they supplied whip cream. Pros: Reasonably good pastries, cheap Cons: Can't trust them for special orders, Limited English Skills, Parking more

Jungle Cafe of Houston has the best cakes ever! Great customer service and great price too! 8/31/2007

My team members and I always order our monthly birthday cakes from Jungle Cafe. We especially love the chocolate moose cake! It is sooo light tasting, delcious and decorated beautifully! I love that they give it to you in a modern looking gift box while sending you home with a candle and cake cutter! I have always volunteered to bring the dessert for any occassion we're invited to because Jungle Cafe's presentation and taste is absolutely adorable. My other friends always want to know what the Artisan's name that created such a beautiful cake! Pros: Easy to get to, Great Price! Cons: Hard to park on the weekends more

Best Cakes and tea! 7/22/2007

My family loves this place. The cakes are light and tasty...not super sweet...the drinks are good too. My favorites are the dark chocolate mousse, mango berry cheesecake, mango mousse cake, black forest cake, hazel nut cake, raspberry green tea, fruit tea, summer coffee float, and the watermelon juice. Pros: Great cakes and drinks Cons: Bad parking lot full of crazy drivers, pricey for cake more

Best cake I've ever had! 7/10/2007

I have not actually been to the Jungle, but my friend bought me a mango creme cake from there. It is not super sweet and actually captures a mango flavor like no cake I've ever had. Hands down, my favorite cake - ever. Pros: delicious cake more

Best cake! 10/20/2006

Quite simply, Jungle Cafe serves the best cakes I've ever had - light, fluffy, and not cloyingly sweet. The cakes are also decorated and boxed professionally. The only downside is the pricing. I believe its around $30 for an 8"" cake. Definitely try Jungle at least once if you've never been (drinks are so-so, its the baked goods that shine). Pros: Delicious Cons: Expensive more

This place is a hidden trasure! 9/25/2005

If you are looking for unique yet delicious cakes and desserts, then look no further! Whenever we need a place that we can depend on to give us the dessert we want, we come here. The place is like a cafe so it has tapoica tea and slushies and it is set up with wireless internet I believe. However, the true redeeming quality of Jungle Cafe is its delicious cakes which are packaged in beautiful high quality boxes. more

Unbelievable Cake 5/16/2005

A co-worker brought a cake for a birthday in the office and I can honestly say that it was the best cake I have ever had. I am not a stranger to sweets either. I definitely know where I will get cakes in the future! Give it a try. more
