Jim's Discount Tire & Brake

Now I'm not really a car person, so I didn't really know what to expect from my journey to cheaply repair my civic. When the wheel on my mighty hybrid got bent by my wonderful driving abilities, I called every junk yard and wrecking yard in town fully knowing that it would be rare to find salvage parts for my car. Following the suggestion from one of the shops, I called Jim's Discount Tire & Brake (possibly also known as ""Jim's Discount Tire"") and found out they might be able to fix the dent for $80 flat, which would be a HUGE difference from the ~$600 quote I got from the dealership. more

I am new to NKC and had some rather serious tire and front end alignment issues. I knew they were there but not nearly as bad as they turned out to be. So, by pressing and immediate necessity moreso than desire, I reluctantly took my car to Jim's after learning of their shop right here in NKC on Armour, and driven by there so many times for the 2+ years even prior to living in NKC. In fact, they are so close I can even walk there to leave or pick up my car. That's nice! more

\r Don't ever use Jims discount tire and brake service. \r \r Today I tried to have Jims discount tire and brake service install a set of 24"" tires on a set of wheels and them put them on my truck. After getting no help unloading the tires they had an employee help unload my wheels. He dropped the first one about 6 inches from the ground, which made me pause out of concern. I moved the second wheel myself. He then tossed the third box with a wheel in it straight to the ground. He damaged my wheel in the process. I figured the guy was having a bad day and didn't report it to his manager or the owner at the time because I was being nice and didn't know it damaged the wheel. 2 hours later they proceed to tell me that low and behold one of the wheels is not straight and true. They say it must have been damaged during shipping. I then try to explain to them how their guy just tossed the wheel in the box. The lady who works the desk was not in the garage at the time, yet she was confident and adamant that she knew what happened. She didn't let me explain anything before getting very testy with me. I then told her, she needs to let me speak. She doesn't know what happened because she was not there. Her explanation makes no sense as she was trying to tell me where the wheel hit when her employee tossed it... It was in a box and landed awkwardly. You can not see in the box to know exactly where the wheel hit. After all of this they kicked my truck out and actually refused to refund me the money I had paid upfront for them to mount the wheels on the truck. They must need the 10 dollars more than I can imagine. They then threaten to call my boss because they know where I work. These people are scum. If you don't buy your wheels from them they will attempt to damage yours, to make you purchase them through them. The lady behind the counter was nice enough to offer to throw away my original 24"" wheels that were almost brand new..... Obviously she knows they are worth a couple thousand dollars and she wouldn't be throwing them away, she would sell them. more

I have been getting my automobiles serviced and repaired here for several years, the staff is outstanding. - The prices the cheapest in town, and the quality of work is OUTSTANDING. The employees all work as a family and call me by first name and ask me how my children are doing. I would highly recommend all services Jim's Discount Tire and Brake has to offer. more

Note that this review was after my first visit, and it was only for an inspection. It's great to see people's reviews here who've been going to Jim's Discount Tire & Brake for 10+ years because really, the test of a good auto shop is whether they give you consistently good service and prices for a number of different types of repairs. However, my experience was stellar. Like other's have set, it's in a difficult spot to pull up - you have to park on the street if there's a space, but if not I recommend double parking in front of their white garage door (assuming someone else isn't already there) and going in to check in. They'll let you know what to do. I did just that, and they said they would be done with someone else in about two minutes and if I went to sit in my car they'll pull me in. That's exactly what happened! The Staff was super super friendly (and even called me ""MIss"" - not ""Ma'm!"" Woohoo!) and helpful and I was in and out of there lickety split (about 10 minutes - probably would have been quicker if they hadn't had to replace two of my brake lights that were out). As I waited I consulted with them about a dealer-based maintenance plan I'd been doing for the first 6 years of car's life and was thinking about switching to a local plan. They were super honest and nice, and went through everything really clearly with me. For inspections and they are first come first served Monday through Friday 7am-5pm and Saturdays from 8:30am to 1:30pm. However, because I needed the lights replaced which was an additional $20, they offered to put the whole thing on a credit card for me. Thanks Jim's Discount Tire & Brake! I just opened this account specifically to give Jim's Discount Tire & Brake a great review. After my experience with Jim's, I completely understand why they have a perfect rating everywhere. Before going to Jim's, I had taken my car to two other mechanics who had seemingly misdiagnosed, tried to charge me for extras that weren't necessary, or included services completely unrelated to the problem in their estimate. Anyway, after researching auto repair shops in Kansas City, I came across Jim's Discount Tire & Brake. I called them at around 2:30 on a Friday. The owner was very friendly and told me to bring it on in. I dropped off my car, explained the problem and headed back home. About 20 minutes later I received a call from Jim who gave a detailed explanation of the problem with my car. He explained every possible option, the price for each option including exactly how much labor would cost. He did not try to persuade me to do anything extra, etc. He just identified the problem, gave me the cost, and fixed the problem without trying to add any BS. I ended up paying a little less than I was quoted, and he showed me all of the parts that were replaced (without me requesting.) In addition, I ended up paying $1,000 less than one mechanic had quoted me. Best experience ever at an auto repair shop and maybe even any business. Jim's Discount Tire & Brake are honest, personable, and a stress free experience. I only wish more businesses were run like them!! more
