Editorial review from Citysearch 12/13/2013

I have to disagree with John Y.. I am so thankful to everyone at this Animal Hospital.. I brought my 3 dogs there for their care.. Dr. Rothstein is a very caring man as is his staff.. My Lily was diagnosed with cancer and everyone there made sure Lily and I were well taken care of.. Lily crossed over at the end with minimal suffering but with much compassion. My 17 year old Sam the Bichon is getting wonderful care there as well... I will not go anywhere else! Thank you so much Saugerties Animal Hospital!! more

DANGER LURKS IN SAUGERTIES! 5/1/2012

Danger lurks in Saugerties when you use this sham vet. People like him until something tragic happens to their animal. Person after person with horror stories to tell. Run don't walk in another direction from this place! Convenient for you because you live in Saugerties? Is that like it's convenient for you to tie your dog up and run into the supermarket and when you come out there is no dog there? Drop the convenient and get your butt to Rhinebeck Animal Hospital, or Roundout Valley Animal Hospital or even to Southpeak..but do not take a chance on an unpredictable level of ""care"" at this house of horrors! more

THANK GOD FOR SAUGERTIES ANIMAL HOSPITAL FOR OUR LUCY! 4/25/2012

We are so thankful to Dr Rothstein and Dr Jackson as well as the staff at Saugerties Animal Hospital for the care received by our Shih Tzu, Lucy. A month ago, Lucy, our 17 month old puppy developed a ""shaking, almost like seizure;"" after 3 visits to the Port Ewen Animal Hospital and Woodstock Animal Hospital within a week time and not getting any satisfaction other than sending us home with a sick puppy and each time charging us .... we called the Saugerties Animal Hospital on a Thursday morning, were told to bring her in within a 2 hour window and upon seeing Lucy were told to leave here there so they could try to determine what occurred .... although the results were not extremely conclusive, Dr Rothstein took the time to keep us updated daily and even Dr Jackson called us on Easter Sunday to give us updates ... a week later we brought Lucy home and each day she is getting stronger and back to being the adorable, cute, loving ""little girl"" that we have come to love. Thank you Dr Rothstein, Dr Jackson and your entire staff .... we will continue to use you for the care of our Lucy who is a big part of our family! more

BEST BY FAR 4/6/2012

I have been going to this animal hospital for many years. I have never had a problem with the doctors or the staff. They have been courtious, friendly and full of useful information. Most of the 'dog people' I know love Dr. Rothstein and Dr. Jackson and we are getting to know Dr. Lang as a caring, compassionate man. He recently helped me through having my Mastiff, Morgan, cross over and was so very kind and gentle. Dr. Rothstein and Dr. Jackson have cared for many of my dogs and always with their well being in mind. They also try to keep cost down when they know I am on a very limited budget. At the dog park, we know many, many people and their dogs and welcome them into the 'pack'. We do not welcome Butter's owner as he does not follow dog park rules and is a 'know it all' who refuses to accept blame for his failures in training and clean-up. I, highly, recommend the Saugerties Animal Hospital as one of the best by far in all the many years I have had dogs in my life who got the best care from them. more

Good Vets Lousy Staff Kennel Cough My Dog Suffering 5/16/2011

I had to stop using this as the Vet for my beloved dog Butter a beautiful friendly loving Golden Retriever as I could not stand or tolerate the way we have been treated repeatedly by one of this Hospitals main receptionists...and the often largely arrogant staff.. I was warned when I first started taking Butter named for my old friend mentor and hero Paul Butterfield that they were very arrogant there by a number of knowledgeable dog owners, but never thought they would transfer this arrogance and prejudice to my beautiful loving friendly dog of now 15 months.. Apparently you must meet her approval to be allowed to be a cash paid in full customer there...she this nurse Ratched is the ultimate gate keeper and arbiter of who gets care or not, or timely care or not... At times when care for Butter was most crucial she takes advantage to demean and degrade you with her boundless arrogant snotty attitude that does all it can to thwart access to the Vets for your beloved pet...and this has now again more than once brought him to harm and even needless endangerment and suffering as she did again today..! When he was due to be fixed as agreed between myself and the doctor and this arrogant staff prevented and denied us, me even a chance to make an appointment for the procedure as Rothstein and I had agreed several times..with her ""I won't even ask him..!"" This might be mostly for single males who are apparently the designated dogs to be kicked at Saugerties Animal Hospital by this main and influential receptionist...and staff maybe were not the proper demographic group or fit their preferred chosen profile maybe they don't like Italians or artists or disabled or men who aren't emasculated wimps... At times pleading with her to ask the Vet she tells you she won't ""even ask him"" for you, so you can get care for your pet.. It's not enough to pay through the nose, you have to be supplicant and subjugate yourself to her for the honor of paying through the nose for access to these Vets.. I think these are fine Veterinarians and liked them but if you can't get access to them or ask them a question of proceed as has occurred in my experience with him as you and the Vet have already agreed and planned ahead of time due to some power tripping Receptionist what good are they..? Maybe me and my dog beautiful loving dog Butter just aren't good enough for them... I'm going to add to this again later and greater detail too upset and trying to help care for Butter until I can get him to his new Vet... He's injured his right front leg jumping into the Esopus retrieving logs as he loves to do...limping some and favoring it, lifting it at times to show me he's hurt but this cruel mean woman did nothing but give us a hard time trying to get in to see these esteemed high and mighty vets to get him the help he needs..how ignorant and arrogant and prejudiced can you be..? I don't care if you approve of me but don't take it out on my beautiful loving friendly dog Butter my constant companion..! When he was left to be fixed he came home with Kennel Cough, they acted as if we or I did something wrong! I had to argue to get a 2nd prescription of antibiotics to get rid of it and call repeatedly for the honor to even speak with an actual Vet....me who has met multiple Presidents and had the highest access to the heads of government agencies and knew more than half of the greatest legends of my generation.. Good medical practice is about listening and communication, Rothstein obviously doesn't get this, he smiles to your face and let's his Staff treat you second rate if even that well.. more

Excellant Practice/Outstanding Reputation 1/16/2011

Dr. Rothstein and his colleagues Dr. Jackson and Dr. Cohen have an outstanding reputation in the Hudson Valley. He has been in practice for almost 40 years It is certainly a busy practice, but the focus is on what needs to be done. Staff ARE courteous . At 5:30 PM is is a very busy place - which always excepts an emergency - most people understand and wait patiently if that happens. Dr. Rothstein has been treating my dogs for 17 years with expertise, compassion and a nice dose of humour. He is simply outstanding and so are the other doctors who work at Saugerties Animal Hospital. more

No great shakes 12/8/2010

They have treated our two cats. one is on Hill's Prescription Diet. They changed the formula and we had to get another vet's prescription to buy the one he really needs. Also, they don't honor Hill's coupons, although HIll's says they should (this stuff is expensive). We just picked up prescriptions for both cats and they had mixed-up the meds. Good thing my wife remembered who took what. True, they were busy that day, but it could have turned out very bad. more

BEWARE - Endangering Your Pet's Life Here! 2/6/2010

If you look at the story about that poor dog that was being starved to death by Dr. Death Rothstein..well Jackson went along with it. She has no backbone and does whatever Rothstein says to do. Jump, she jumps. Ugh...sickening. Cons: She's a clone of Dr. Death more

BEWARE: Dangerous Place 2/6/2010

This is a very dangerous place for your animals. No kidding but this Rothstein character is known in some local circles as Dr. Death! I know of a dog that he was starving to death..poor dog was so skinny that his eye socket fell in and his legs kept collapsing. Owner finally got wise and took the dog to another vet..they had to fatten him up to save his life. Dog was 75 lbs and should have weighed 125 lbs and Dr. Death Rothstein kept telling the owner that the dog was too fat. FAT? This vet has to retire and not soon enough. There are other horror stories around. Pros: Bad Judgement Cons: Poor Medical Evaluations and Treatments more

great vet! 12/28/2009

dr. jackson and dr. rothstein have cared for my pets for over 12 years - they go above and beyond to make sure that your beloved, furry family members are healthy and happy. i have had several emergency ""porcupine"" incidents over the years and dr. jackson did not hesitate to meet me at the office after hours and pull each and every quill out of my dingbat bulldog's mouth and palate -stitched her up when she faced off with a groundhog - and they took care of her 8 pups beautifully. we recently adopted a new puppy and are absolutely going to stay with our vets and feel confident that she will thrive under their care. Pros: very professional and compassionate - they really care! Cons: don't support raw diet for canines more

Dr. Death For A Reason 5/9/2009

This vet is so horrid that I don't know where to begin warning people not to use him or his partner Jackson. Cons: INEPT, CAUSES PAIN, SUFFERING, DEATH more

Caring and professional 12/23/2008

I have taken many critters to the Saugerties Animal Hospital, dogs, cats, goats, turkeys, puppies....etc., for regular care and often in emergency/life threatening situations. The treatment given my animals has always been thorough and usually successful. A few times nothing could be done to avoid the fate of death and on those RARE occasions the compassion shown to me was astounding. I find the office staff to be friendly and the staff of veterinarians to be excellent diagnosticians. Pros: will fit you in if seriously needed Cons: sometimes a considerable wait to be seen (see above ""pro"" as reason) more

Avoid this Vet 10/6/2008

Where do I start. My dog had displasia since 2/08. Dr Jackson recommended Rimadyl for the pain. She took all the lab work necessary to make sure my dog was healthy enough to withstand the medicine. He was Dr Jackson told me to give the dog the Rimadyl when needed. It wasn't working so Dr. Rothstein told me to give it 2 times a day every single day. That's what did it. In May my dog started to have diarreha and throwing up.. No tests had been done to monitor his liver for damage due to the Rimadyl. He had surgery in August and again no lab tests were done to see if he would withstand the surgery. He got very sick shortly after the surgery, I brought him back several times. They did not know what it was. In one week in September I had the dog to the vet 5 times. The bill was astronomical with all the meds they tried. I have to say that Dr. Jacksn tried but had no idea what was wrong. My dog died on 9/21/08 in my arms from a heart attack. The truth is I requested all his records and noticed that the lab work that was done on 9/18 showed that his liver had been destroyed. The bottom line. They should have monitored him. I adopted another pet and will not be taking him to this vet. Pros: convienient. Cons: Do not do follow up work after prescribing medication more

Best vet we've found 9/26/2008

The office can get busy, yes, but that's because everyone wants to bring their pets there. Dr. Rothstein is, in my experience, an outstanding diagnostician, and Dr. Jackson a brilliant surgeon. The reason people have to wait is because the vets take as much time as necessary with people's pets. I have found them to be caring, accurate, and available in an emergency. True, if they don't know what is wrong, they say so, and recommend specialists: I'd rather have that response than go to a vet who pretends to know something but doesn't. Pros: knowledgeable, caring, responsive to the pets' needs Cons: can have long waits; sometimes understaffed office more

Busy office, Staff reserved, Prices high, Vet didn't know pet problem, whats with that. 9/14/2008

I took my pet to this same vet for the same problem now three times. They have no idea what it is and I have had to tell them what I was told it was from another vet. Then they go .... oh right, it might be that.... Pros: Local to Village. Cons: Too busy and don't seem to know whats happening. more

Too busy to pay any attention to your pet. 3/12/2008

Dr Rothstein is a great vet. However, the office is so busy it is rare a vet will actually pay attention when examining my pets. The receptionists are too busy to be nice or caring and seem to take pleasure in that. They're going to tell those city people a thing or 2! I have lived in NYC for 32 years and never encountered this level of ""professional"" behavior. They are simply too busy and are caught up in it. So they are not polite. Makes a difference when your pet is not well, Also, since they are so busy, my pets are not really checked out properly and I get the feeling I am ""in the way"" although I am paying for the service. Major problems were missed because my pets were not really looked at, too many others waiting. I'm going back to NYC, i do believe i've had enough! more
