Best

Hard to believe Seattle's best traditional sushi restaurant is in a strip mall in Totem Lake! But it's true! Izumi is a gem. Absolutely everything on the menu is prepared beautifu...

Worst

My girlfriend wanted to get some Japanese food for dinner a few days ago, so we went to Lzumi. Food was okay...but, it wasn't what I expected with the money I paid for.. However, ...

If this is the best Sushi on the Eastside I better move back to California 10/12/2006

Just to let you know where I'm coming from, my favorite sushi restaurants are the two omakase places on Sawtelle in Los Angeles - Sasabune and Hiko. Some accuse those places of using too much sauce or pandering, but that's what I like. Cons: Don't get the omakase more

Beste Japanese / Sushi Restaurant on the East Side 8/10/2006

Still my favorite, a real taste of Japan I've been to many Japanese resaturants (ILoveSushi, SushiLand, Wasabi, etc) in WA but Izumi is my favorite. I like it because its very authentic. The Sashimi was great, we had a variety of sushi which was also very tasty. Service was good considering how busy it was. I definitely recommend it Pros: very authentic, delicious sushi more

Most horrible sushi night in Seattle 4/20/2006

I've only lived here for a year now, but I've tried many sushi places, and decided to try Izumi based on the citysearch rating and another acquaintance of mine recommended it. I will definitely not go back. The place was dead, yet the service was the slowest we've ever received anywhere. They completely forgot our edamame order, then brought it out freezing cold, and the hamachi was so fishy and had skin and tons of fat on it. Yuck! Cons: Service, Food, Location more

Go for the sushi---not the other stuff 2/16/2006

Sushi here is quite fresh and delicious, however their other items are not very inspiring. Their tempura is quite average as their batter is not very flaky. The chicken teriyaki tastes more like a Hawaii-inspired shoyu chicken and the Sukiyaki didn't have as many vegetables/ingredients I've gotten used to in my old San Mateo, CA haunt. One hint, order the sushi/sashimi a la carte. You get the ""Godzilla"" size pieces of fish when you order it this way. We made the mistake of ordering a sushi combo and we felt we got less fish than what we paid for. Pros: Sushi, Charming waitresses, Comfortable Cons: Other Japanese dishes more

Great traditional Japanese restaurant 12/5/2005

I've dined at Izumi numerous times over the last 3 years, including parties of 8. The food is always great, even though service is average. It might not be the best place for sushi (try Kikuya in Redmond), but traditional Japanese dishes are excellent. Try black cod, as well as sukiyaki and you will be back again! Overall one of the best Japanese restaurants on the Eastside, definetely recommended. Pros: Food Cons: Location more

Worst Restaurant ever 11/4/2005

No customer service. Food served in aluminium bowl. Completely watery. Lost my apetite for couple of days... Will never ever step into the restaurant again. My advice stay away from this place as much as you can. Cons: Expensive, tateless, pathetic service more

The very best traditional Japanese rest. 11/1/2005

I know, it's hard to accept that Seattle's best sushi is in a strip mall in Totem Lake! But believe it. Izumi is the perfect traditional Japanese restaurant. They serve the most exquisite cuts of fish you'll ever see... and generous too. Even the spicy tuna roll (typically, in our area, made from a chopped slaw of tuna remainder pieces) is a bundle of rich-colored perfect slices. They're obsessive about quality and it shows in everything they serve. The kani suno mono has a huge mound of fresh crab, yum! And their hot dishes are outstanding as well. There is usually a bento special at a great price. Service is darling. But don't bother going there if you're into the trendy modified-cali-roll and cream-cheese-maki scene, this is the real thing -- not play-doh sushi! Pros: excellent food, quality ingredients, great value more

Awesome sushi on the Eastside 9/21/2005

Wow - this place is awesome. Their sushi is traditional, no-frills. Their sashimi is some of the best we've had in the area - large pieces of fish and very fresh. The service is excellent. Very quiet, low-key - simply a great place! more

The Best In The Area 1/4/2005

Best sushi hands down in King County. Izumi serves sushi the quality of which is on par with that of Ventura Boulevard sushi restaurants. The salmon belly and hamachi are particularly fresh and sliced and served ""godzilla"" style, which is the ultra large portion style common in Manhattan in recent years. Treat yourself to a serving of toro and fresh sea urchin if they have it. Watch the chef open the sea urchin right in front of you and serve it to you on top of the horny shell it just came from. Can't get much fresher than that. Pros: excellent sushi, godzilla slicing , warm service more

Good-No frills sushi 12/5/2004

I just moved here from LA, and I was quite pleased when I discovered Izumi. The quality is superb, and the friendly staff is eager to make your experience satisfying. My wife and I have a 3 month old, and they are always very accommodating for us. A+, we have our new favorite sushi spot! Pros: Quality, Portion size more

Wonderful 11/29/2004

Have eaten at Izumi's many times over the years. The sushi is simply the best - always impeccably fresh. The prawn tempura is light and you are given a large portion. The chicken teriyaki is terrific. Service is knowledgeable and friendly. Cleanliness is paramount at Izumi and it shows. You'll never find utensils with stuck on food or lip prints on a glass or cup. Try this place. It's simply the best. Pros: Sushi and all food, Friendly servers, Nice pricing Cons: , Nothing else more

Great Sushi 2/9/2004

My wife and I love this place, they have great Sushi, and the service is always very good. The prices are fairly resonable and the food is always excellent. more

Great Fish..BIG Pieces 12/23/2003

I went to Izumi for the first time on Sunday night and what a pleasant surprise. We got 5 pieces of chefs choice which was incredible fish....salmon, tuna, yellowtail and toro....wow! The king crab was excellent too. It has the typical sushi restaurant decor but if you are a true sushi lover you will be very happy with Izumis food. Pros: good value, big pieces, easy parking Cons: strip mal, totem lake more

A Little Overpriced 6/23/2003

Sushi was fresh but overpriced. Have limited choices for rolls. more

Many Sushi Wishes 10/17/2002

I made my first trip to Izumi Sushi Bar recently, and it will not be my last. Here's why....... The employees were extremely friendly, especially the sushi chef with glasses. He proved to be funny, charming, handsome, and he can make quite a spicy tuna roll. The other sushi chef was a little rude though, but it did not ruin my experience. I have to agree with sushi_luva247, this a unique experience that can't be missed. I also noticed that my dishes were very clean and presentable. I've been to other sushi bars that had leftover bits of food on my plates that was gross. Thanks Izumi!! Pros: Charming Sushi Chef, Clean Dishes more

Sushi, food, fun!!! 10/8/2002

I bountiful feast of thick cuts of fish and perfectly prepaired food. Clean dishes and a great atmosphere. A sushi cheif by the name Toshimi Ishibashi was entertaining, charismatic, and prepaired the most beautiful sushi that i have ever seen.(He was also very handsom) If i ever end up on death row, i am going to order my meal from IZUMI!!! Pros: food, atmosphere, Cheifs Cons: non more

Good food, slow service 8/21/2002

The atmosphere was nice. But the service was very slow, friendly but slow. We had to ask for tea 3 times and water twice. And it didn't seem that busy. The food was excellant. Large servings of sushi and the chicken teriyaki dinner was huge. Luckily we weren't in too much of a hurry. I think I would return. more

Typical, NO Traditional, YES 8/9/2002

If your looking for your Rainbow roll, Ichiro roll, Rainier roll. Don't look here. Your not going to find it on the menu. Its not what there are there for. If your looking for traditional Japanese cuisine, I would say yes. Well heck, even Ishiro had to wait over an hour to sit at the sushi bar. They felt that even though he is a star, they want to treat everyone equally. So if you prefer to dunk your sushi until the rice is black and green (Wasabi). This place might seems a waist of money for you. However, if your looking for a dinning experience for your taste bud. I would recommend it. You have to remember that Japanese food is not meant to be over powering. Teriyaki Sauce is not suppose to be overwhelming sweet. And if you have kids, teach them early. Stay away from happy meal. more

Great for sushi and a lot more 7/29/2002

Izumi wins my vote for best sushi because of its traditional nature. The older waitresses where traditional Japanese atire. The sushi is excellent and the pieces are carefully prepared and large. The sauce of the fresh water eel (unagi) is always just the right amount. Sometimes you just want quality sushi with no frills and this is just the place to go. Also it is an excellent place to take people who don't like sushi because the chicken teriyaki is quite simple the best in King County. more
