One of the best restaurants in the city. ALWAYS good for pickup, delivery, or eating in the restaurant. I like the chef recommendations.

Oatmeal Milkshake better than ambrosia 7/27/2010

The food here is great, but that's not important. Not when it's a melting humid day and I'm sweating like a pig in a sauna. On these instances, which happen all too often in Chicago, all I want is an Avena Shake sprinkled liberally with cinnamon. These oatmeal shakes are heavenly and unlike anything I have tasted anywhere else. Like an horchata and DQ blizzard lovechild on steroids. Imagine the best oatmeal cookie you've ever had, blended up and chilled. You pretty much get the idea. This shake is rich and flavorful, but never overpowering. I'm always able to finish the entire thing in just a few gulps. Try the oatmeal banana if you're in the mood for something a little tropical. If you know a poor teenager who has braces and chewing hurts so bad that they are on a bizarre liquid diet - bring them to Irazu for an oatmeal shake and they will be eternally grateful. Pros: Avena Shake more

Good, cheap and fast 11/5/2009

This afternoon, a wormhole opened up at Irazu Restaurant and delivered this unsuspecting diner straight to Buca Di Beppo. Now it is unusual indeed for a wormhole to masquerade as a bowl of chicken soup but evidently, adding enough garlic to a bowl of liquid can create strange phenomena. And this wasn?t all. It would appear that the soup pot doubles as the restaurant?s grease trap since there was more of it floating on top than actual ingredients. I guess during these economic times, anything to save a penny is worthwhile. However, it would be unfair to withhold the positives of which there are many. Not even at Subway can one still get a giant sandwich for $4.95, on great bread and bursting with beef. The burritos are bizarrely good and the empanadas the greatest deal on the menu. This place has been around for years and you owe it yourself to go the next time a burrito craving strikes you. Just hold the soup and save everyone around you from holding their noses. Pros: Cost, large portions, Cubano Sandwich Cons: Cash only. more

I think I have found my favorite place in this area. I'm a vegetarian and am almost always overwhelmed by how many options i have here. The potato tacos are my favorite entree, but the vegetarian sandwich was surprisingly amazing. You have to try one of the shakes for sure - I got a mix of mango and passionfruit that was awesome. Definitely get the gallo pinto (costa rican rice) if given the option - it is amazing. Will definitely order again more

I understand restaurants get busy on a Saturday night, but when Grubhub promises me my $46 order by 7:30 and I'm calling them at 8:05, there's a problem. They told me the order left with several others about 40 minutes ago. So you know what that means - my dinner isn't close to hot. And part of my order was wrong. And the drink I got tasted like water - 40 minutes rolling around in a bag full of ice ... Gee I wonder why.\r \r I'm giving Irazu 2 stars and I'm giving Grubhub 2 stars. When I place an order with Grubhub, it is their job to get me my food on time.\r \r I remember when Grubhub was reliable. I've called customer service way too often lately. And while the person on the phone is almost always nice, it's the same thing. A $10 gift card for my trouble. My patience is wearing thin ... There are other services I can use and while I'm just one customer it doesn't excuse the poor quality. more

Worst service in Bucktown, rude guy behind the counter, waiters never follow-up with you. Food has no taste. Looking for Costa Rican food, it's not found here. Pros: cheap Cons: worst service more

I will start with the only thing I did not completely love about this restaurant. I didn't really care for their corn tortillas. That said, everything else was delicious, delivered very quickly (the delivery guy even texted me saying he was on his way), and fairly priced for how much food you get. more

I've ordered from Irazu 3 times this month; the food is that good! Vegetarian Burritos, Vegetarian Taccos, and Empanadas (black bean is my fav) were all delicious. Portions are large (I can never finish the Veggie Burrito in one sitting - yay leftovers!), and the food reminds me of home cooking (not too greasy, not too salty). I also love their oatmeal shakes, although mine always arrive half melted. But I suppose that can't really be helped, and they still taste wonderful. Highly recommended! more
