This place is horrible.The food was old and cold i dont like this food. i think i should try other indian restrurant in town.I think tandoor is best place for indian food. Tandoor is much better than india star Pros: dont like more

The service was better than most restaurants I have visited and no it isn't ""the best"" but it's pretty darn good. We've tried HuHot, a Thai place, another Indian restaurant in this town and actually (out of Des Moines) this is probably the best place we have eaten. Basically, my husband and I will visit this restaurant again.\r \r ""Minneapolis, check out the place called ""Bombay Bistro"" in downtown or a place called ""Chapatti"" in Edina"" That is not in Des Moines! I bet they have good Indian food in India, hopefully. Compare restaurants within a city. Thank you for the rec but a town's standards are a town's standards. Doesn't Minn have more people? Not to mention, more Diverse people? Pros: Service was great, not avoided but not left alone. Value. Cons: No Aquarium :) I didn't feel bad for over paying for bad food, the ambiance didn't override what I ate. more

So, I visited Des Moines for some work and was searching for Indian food. I was really afraid to go here because of the bad reviews. But, the food is very nice. This place is run by Punjabi folks, and the food tastes really great. \r Also, buffet was the cheapest I have ever had, but that doesn't mean the quality was bad or anything. \r I was just looking for India Star?s phone number to give a friend and I saw a review here that said their food was terrible. That prompted me to sit down and submit my own review.\r \r I have been lucky enough to have traveled all of the world, including India, and with very rare exception India Star has some of the best Indian food I have ever had. In fact the Chicken Vindaloo (if you order it extremely hot) is the very best I have ever had anywhere in the World. \r \r My vegetarian friends also rave about the excellent quality and taste of their food, so I can not understand how anyone could claim that this restaurant has terrible food. Quite the opposite from my experience. I'm not sure why others have had a terrible experience here, but I've been ten times or more and have been highly impressed each time! (It's possible that the other reviews are people representing OTHER Indian restaurants and are threatened by India Star's quality) I agree that their former location was a bit of a dive, but they're now located on Douglas Ave and have expanded and updated. If you're a person who judges a restaurant solely on ambience, Tandoor is the right choice. However, if you prefer to judge a restaurant on the quality of their FOOD, India Star is the appropriate choice. Their staff is nice, and prompt. In fact, my boyfriend mentioned he liked the music that was playing, and the next time we came in the chef had burned the CD for him! I've eaten PLENTY of Indian food, and I can even make a few dishes. I'm not the best at it, but even I can make better food than what I have tasted at India Star. I checked this place out even though my better judgment instructed me not to after I read the terrible reviews here. I was utterly disappointed the first time I went there. I had ordered one Paneer dish, one Malai Kofta, Naan, and mago lassi (yogurt drink with mango pulp). ALL OF IT WAS TERRIBLE. \r \r The naan was cold and slightly burnt. Good naan should be soft, fluffy around the center, slightly crunchy on the sides, and very warm. Their naan is nowhere close to that.\r The two curries I ordered were bland by Indian standards even though I had specifically asked them to be generous on the spices. Especially, the paparika. The mango lassi was too thin and simply tasted like sweet water. The service was nothing impressive either.\r \r So, I had a terrible first experience at India Star. But, I'm all about the ""3 strikes"" rule. Even the finest of the restaurants have their bad days. So, I went back to India Star a second time. This time around, I was in the area during their lunch buffet so I went for that. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Everything was either cold or lukewarm. Every item was completely tasteless and bland. Indian food is supposed to be served hot and flavorful. This junk wasn't even close to that.\r \r For my third and final time I went there for dinner with a friend who also loves Indian food. Guess what? It was the exact same experience yet again. The food was just terrible. I'm not one to make a scene and I typically keep my silence unless something really crosses my line by a mile. I couldn't bear eating this food so I told the Indian waitress to take my dish back and redo it. She was pretty rude about the whole process. I got my food back and it still sucked.\r \r At this point, my friend and I just walked out never to enter the doors of India Star ever again. Pros: None. Cons: Terrible food. Cheap service. First off, I'm an Indian. I was born & partially raised there. I've eaten at countless Indian restaurants and we also cook Indian food at home.\r \r I recently moved to Des Moines and had the opportunity to eat at India Star. To be blunt, it was horrible. The food tasted like they took microwavable curries from an Indian grocery store and added some spices on top according to taste. Also, the naan bread was burnt! I asked them to replace it and the Indian woman at the counter argued with me that it isn't burnt! She humiliated me by grabbing the naan bread to inspect it and told me that it is cooked right! I told her that the other Indian place in town serves the same item and it isn't burnt like this, and she had the nerve to tell me to go eat over there!\r \r SHE TOLD ME TO GO EAT AT THE OTHER INDIAN PLACE BECAUSE MY ORDER WASN'T DONE RIGHT!\r \r Even if I didn't have to deal with this horrible person, I still wouldn't eat at this place because their food is a joke. It's a cheap rip-off of North-Indian food. I chuckled when I saw how many people leave complements in their little message book at the front counter, but then I looked around the restaurant and noticed that it was all Americans who probably haven't had the opportunity to try better Indian food.\r \r This place is an insult to Indian food. Yes, they are slightly cheaper than the other two Indian restaurants in town, but I guess you get what you pay for.\r \r If you ever get a chance to go to Minneapolis, check out the place called ""Bombay Bistro"" in downtown or a place called ""Chapatti"" in Edina. The service is 2nd to none and so is the food, especially for the price. The only downside, is the building is kind of a dive. But, it's a great place to go anyway. more
