I started by emailing Lindsay Martinez after I saw a listing on the Ideal Properties Group website that I was interested in. My boyfriend and I were looking for a one bedroom in the Gowanus/ Park Slop area. Lindsay and I traded emails for about a week. We scheduled viewings twice during the workday, but both times Lindsay had to cancel. Since my boyfriend was only available on the weekend, we eventually settled on a Saturday appointment as our first meeting.
I told Lindsay we were available in the morning. She asked me to meet her at 2pm. I explained that 2pm was not in the morning, and therefore, did not work for us. Lindsay said she would meet us at her office at 11am. It takes us about an hour to get out to that part of Brooklyn so we left early. Getting off the train a few blocks away, I received a text that Lindsay was not in the area and would not be able to take us to look for appointments.
She said her colleague Danielle would substitute. Fine. No problem. I am flexible. But before I can even get to the office, Danielle calls me and says she can't show us any apartments either. I'll spare you the details but eventually a THIRD broker took us out at 11:30. Fine. All's well that ends well.
We see four places, one of which we really like- new construction, DISHWASHER, roof deck. I'm in love. We ask Lindsay if the price is negotiable. She talks to her manager and comes back with a number $100 lower then the asking price. Based on that, we decide to apply.
I leave work early, give her a deposit of $500 plus $60 for a credit check. We go over the terms of the application and Lindsay assures me that the landlord can accept the terms and approve us, or come back with another offer. Based on that, we submit and application and wait.
The very next day, around 4pm, Lindsay texts me. ""You have been approved! You can sign the lease tonight, bring checks.""
I explain to LIndsay that my boyfriend is working and can't make it into Brooklyn at 5pm on a Tuesday. She insists that we sign the lease tonight. I think the pressure is strange, i mean, what is the rush? They already have a deposit. But eventually my boyfriend agrees to make the hour long journey into Brooklyn to sign the freaking lease.
He arrives, and an agent (not Lindsay, who passes off a lot of her duties to other agents, apparently) meets us. They have changed the signing location. We have to walk ten blocks to the signing. Fine. I'm just happy to be settling this and not have to look at any more apartments!
We get there, and the landlord hands us a lease for the higher rent amount and a different move in date then we agreed to on our application. We are bamboozled. Perplexed. We already negotiated the rent. The landlord looks at us like we each have 2 heads and 4 arms. He has never seen the application. And he is not willing to accept the rent that was already ""approved.""
I was nothing short of devastated. Once I heard we were approved, I got really excited and started daydreaming about how I would decorate, how close I would be to my job, etc. I told all my coworkers and my sister about the news. If you have ever been led on and let down, I feel your pain!
Lindsay's explanation (when I FINALLY get her on the phone): she never had direct contact with the landlord. She apologizes but does not accept responsibility. If a broker is paid for anything, isn't it to act as the person who communicates between the client and the landlord? What exactly did she do with the application I gave her, besides take my money? Saying that we were pissed is a massive understatement.
So do you want to do business with a broker who doesn't have direct contact with the landlord? Who approves you only so you can be disappointed and start your annoying, time consuming, expensive apartment search over from the beginning? If so, go with Lindsay.
