Editorial review from Citysearch 2/23/2014

Over the years, about 20 to be exact, we have enjoyed the food at this restaurant along with excellent service. In fact we think the food there is the best Chinese food in the Vinings/Marietta area. We normally do not go there when it is very busy, so it might be possible that the service could be taxed during busy times. However, we find the service and the friendliness of the wait staff to be very acceptable. Moreover, when we have company or family in town, they all want to have at least one meal at the House of Chan because they too have experienced consistently good food at the restaurant. We have to rate it tops! more

Warning! I ate lunch there and was so sick the entire day and night afterwards. Possibly food poisoning. Luckily I did not eat much of my entree as it was so sugary sweet (I had the cashew chicken). Would NOT recommend this restaurant. Completely over rated. more

Terrible food, terrible manager and staff! 4/11/2011

We had dinner there and experienced staff who were extremely rude and food with absolutely no flavor or taste. The duck sauce tastes like nothing, the egg rolls are completely bland with just white ""stuff"" inside. When asked to see the manager, she arrives with a huge attitude and acts like we are the problem since they have been in business for 40 years. I explained to her the flavorless food and instead of apologizing and offering me something else she argued that they have been in business 40 years and that the server will have to pay for the food. What kind of house policy is that? more

Must have picked a bad night. 12/21/2010

I really hate giving this low of rating as this place has been good over the years. However after 1 bad experience I had no choice. \r \r My girlfriends meal was fine but I had ordered the Peking Beef and it was nothing close to peking beef. It was some sugary crunchy mess that was inedible. It was suppose to be sliced tenderloin with spicy and pungent sauce. The response I got was ""yep, that is what it is"". Really.....\r \r I will call owner/manager to see what his response is but not to hopeful. It is sad as this use to my favorite Asian place in Smyrna.\r \r Edit: I did call and was informed that the recipe is 39 years old and I shouldnt choose it next time. I wanted to suggest that they include the super sweet and sugary, inedible part on their menu and was not looking for a refund. Needless to say the customer service is horrible. I will keep the 2 stars because the tea was good and the water was cold. Will never be going back. more

Great Sauces, fresh ingredients... 3/22/2010

Some of the best Chinese Food in ATL outside of Buford Hwy. We go 1-2 times a week for 8 years. Lunch specials are great value. We always have leftovers from the dinner portions. Some of our favorites are Tangerine Chicken, Kong Pau Chicken, Egg Foo Yong, Double Cooked Pork, Moo Goo Gai Pan... their Hot & Sour Soup is To Die For! Fresh ingredients are very evident. more

I'm from New York so I think I know good Chinese food 3/27/2009

I'm from New York and have been searching for about 3 years for great Chinese. I have travelled all over Atlanta in search of it. I went to House of Chan's because of all the positive reviews. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken and it came with fried rice. My boyfriend ordered 10wings and vegetable rice. I can honestly say they have the freshest and lightest tasting chicken i've had in Georgia. But honestly I will say the food isn't as great as everyone says. I will say the Chinese is about as good as you can get in Georgia. The chicken is awesome, But the chicken wings were salty but they were fried well and they tasted great-minus the salt. The rice was very light and tasty but they had NO salt on it. I would recommend this place. All in all the food was great. But I content on believing that the best Chinese comes from China, New York and California. Everything else is second to it. I will surely eat there again. Maybe they had an off night. hope this helps Pros: Real Chicken Cons: Either too much salt or not enough more

Good entrees, bad egg rolls, overbearing hostess 12/5/2008

My husband and I no longer eat at House of Chan. This makes me very sad, b/c despite the fact that their egg rolls and crab rangoon were never very good, they had the best sesame chicken and beef/broccoli and we actually loved their free hot tea. We ate there a few times a month, and the small staff there started to recognize us.\r \r The hostess is very nice, I swear. But it slowly escalated from greeting us warmly, to chatting for a moment when she sat us, to stopping by to chat while we were eating, to sitting and talking with us until our food arrived ... until the last time we went, when she pulled a chair up to our booth and talked to us the whole time we were there. We provided one-word answers to her questions, didn't ask any of our own, referred to it as our ""date night"" ... all to no avail. It was just too awkward, so we stopped going. \r \r Anyway, the entrees are really amazing, so I highly recommend House of Chan ... just don't be too friendly with the staff, I guess. Pros: Great prices, yummy entrees, kind staff, clean place Cons: the deep-fried appetizers (egg rolls, crab rangoon) always seemed to be cool in the middle; overbearing hostess more

Fresh ingredients, good service 4/15/2007

The House of Chan isn't your average strip mall Chinese restaurant. It's been family run for over 20 years. The food was good, different than your average fair. I had the egg drop soup, which was slightly less salty than some versions. I also had the fried rice, which was not as greasy as some; it tasted lighter. My only complaint was that the rice did not have many vegetables in it.. My dining companion had the house special of shrimp, beef, and tofu. I enjoyed a few pieces of his tofu, and the soy based sauce was quite good. Service was pleasant and very prompt. The hot tea that is included with the meal is very flavorful. It is a few dollars more than most Chinese restaurants, but the fresh food is worth the price. Pros: Fresh ingredients, efficient service, large portion sizes Cons: Hard to find more

Love Chan's 3/19/2006

I sure do miss House of Chan. Living in Florida now and sure wish I had my Dragon House Chicken. Food is ""refreshingly"" fresh and excellent quality. Yumm! more

One of my family's favorites for years..... 1/19/2006

My mother used to work just around the corner from The House of Chan back in the 80's. My family and I have been going there ever since. Most of my friends that I bring to Chan's think that all Chinese food is the same. They are greatly mistaken! This is one of the finest restaurants I have ever eaten at. Great service and the food is to die for. The hunan shrimp and lemon chicken are personal favorites, however, the black pepper chicken, mongolian beef, and seaseme chicken are great as well. Give it one try and you will be hooked like I am. more

a disappointment 1/19/2006

Everything here was way too greasy for my taste...I don't think I'll be coming back. The staff seemed like they definitely paid special attention to regular patrons, but were polite to newcomers as well. The decor is nothing special, but what do you expect on Cobb Parkway? ;-) Pros: price, service Cons: GREASY! more

Worth the drive 7/29/2005

We became familiar with the House of Chan when we lived in Smyrna a few years back and dined there at least once a week. After moving to North Carolina, we were unable to find another Chinese restaurant with the quality of food and service that we had grown accustomed to at the HOC. For that reason, whenever we really need a ""good Chinese food fix"", we drive from our home just outside Greensboro to Smyrna for the HOC. We've yet to be disappointed, even though our friends think were a little nuts! Pros: Great Food, Exceptional service, Moderate prices Cons: Too popular more

Great Chinese! 7/13/2005

Being a relative newcomer to Smyrna, I found out about this place from others who'd lived here a long time and tried all the other places. The food is top notch, and the service, though it may be a bit matter-of-fact for some, is always pleasant enough for me. Many servers appear to have been there a long time, since I see the same ones over and over. The black pepper chicken is exceptional! Pros: Good fresh food Cons: Blink and you miss it more

Long Time Favorite 9/29/2004

This cozy family-owned restaurant has been around for 20+ years and has been a long time favorite of ours. We've tried some of the other new ones in the area, but we keep coming back because of the excellent food and good smiling service. This place has been recognized every year in Zagat's since way back before 1997. Some of the delicious dishes you must try include Hunan Seabass, Honey Crystal Shrimp, Pecan Chicken, Tangerine Beef....and their house specialty Kulu Chicken. Try those and I guarentee you'll be back for more. more

Seems hit or miss 5/27/2004

We started with wonton and hot and sour soups. Standard fare. For our main dishes we ordered the Hunan eggplant with chicken, veggy fried rice and veggy moo shu. The eggplant dish was very tasty. Just the right balance of sweet and spicy. Everything was as tender as could be. The moo shu and fried rice were disappointing, however. Very underseasoned and lacking in, believe it or not, vegetables. Little depth of flavor. Other notes: For Cantonese cuisine, the food was remarkably grease free. Pros: Quick service, Reasonable prices more

Amazing Food! 6/29/2003

I have been going to House of Chan at least 15 or so years now and being a Native down here I have to say that this restaurant is one of the best kept secrets. HOC has consistently top notch food and great service. It is definitely worth the trip to Cobb Parkway. Pros: Excellent Food, Excellent Service, Good Parking more

Great for the value 1/31/2003

This restaurant is great, not only for the value but the service is wonderful. Pros: Priced Just Right more

Chan's Is Chinese Champion 7/30/2002

I almost hate to let this cat out of the bag. This is one of the best chinese restaurants I've ever eaten at. The Chans have run it for years--Mrs. Chan does the cooking and Mr. Chan takes care of the patrons. The food is always very fresh and the dishes are great. The specials depend upon what was freshest at the market and are usually one of the menu highlights. Once you try this, all other chinese food will pale in comparison. They have a pretty loyal following, so make reservations. Pros: Reasonably Priced, Reservations, Good parking more
