Always a treat! 2/6/2010

I lived in Addis Ababa for three years so when I moved to Nashville I tried several Ethiopian restaurants. This is my favorite. The food and atmosphere are wonderfully authentic. The servers are always friendly and helpful. The food is excellent on all three levels: beauty, aroma, and taste. I go back again and again and have never been disappointed. Cons: It's not next door to my home or office more

Don't Bother 7/31/2009

After reading the other reviews, I was really excited about this restaurant. We are not from Nashville so we did not know where the place was located before we set out. As we pulled into the parking lot and got a look at the outside red flags were popping up in my mind but I thought, looks can be deceiving so we should give it a chance. Mistake. Inside looked worse than the outside, the service was terrible and the portions were small. I have had Ethiopian food before and this was so so. Will not ever go here again. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

Wonderful Experience 6/15/2009

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday. We both love trying different ethnic cuisines and I found this place on citysearch. Terrific food served in an authentic fashion made this a perfect evening. I would highly recommend this restarurant. Pros: Authentic food and service Cons: Was hard to communicate in English more

What a treat! 12/21/2007

My girlfriend and I went here one night for something different. The owners were very friendly and prompt. This is the only restaurant I have been to regardless of price that did a proper tea service complete with milk, sugar, china and tiny silver spoon. I was most impressed. The basket tables are fun and serve their purpose well. Eating with your hands takes some getting used to but was kind of fun. The flavors were varied and tasty. We got the sample plate and were satisfied and stuffed at the end. The food is pretty much served at room temperature which kind of threw me off at first but the flavors made up for that. We will be going back. Pros: Good food, tea, service Cons: Location more

Great Take Out Option 2/1/2007

I've had very good Ethiopian food in San Francisco and Seattle, and Horn of Africa stands right up there with the best. I always get their veggie combo to go (along with an order of doro wot--the spicy chicken) when I get the craving for the spicy and intense flavor of Ethiopian food. The injera bread here is plentiful and spongy--just perfect! Some of their dishes tend to be a little greasy, but wash it down with a cold beer and you have an ideal meal for a cold winter night. more

Good Ethiopian Food!!! 9/25/2006

This food at this restaurant is very, very good. The owners have come into Nashville and brought the best Ethiopian food I have ever had here in Tennessee. Dishes to try include the Doro Wot (chicken) and the Key Wot (Beef), both very spicy dishes but an excellent taste for the tongue. I usually have it with timatim salad, ayib (cheese), and it comes with ingera (bread) of course. The prices are affordable and I wish you good eating; And don't forget the tip, it's well worth it. more

A Hidden Jewel 3/11/2006

The Horn of Africa exceeded my expectation in every possible way. The food was different from anything I ever had before. All the dishes were seasoned to perfection! The combination platter was a perfect way to sample a lot of different dishes. None of the dishes disappointed. This was my first experience with Ethiopian food. The owner took the time to explain the different dishes and make recommendation. A can't wait for visit again!! more

Great place! 2/9/2005

This spot is hidden in the Cresent Plaza off Murfreesboro Pike but it worth looking for--great service, wonderully spiced food, and a wonderful value. Get the combination plate so you have the opportunity to taste several items with the perfect injera bread. Enjoy! more

Unique Dining 3/20/2003

Having dinner at the Horn of Africa was very unique. The presentation of the meal and the dining experince is one that needs to be experienced not only once but many times Pros: Unique, great value, good parking Cons: No wine, No liquor more

What? No Forks? 12/20/2002

From the traditional basket ""tables"" to the absence of eating utensils, you'll find that Horn of Africa is a delightfully different dining experience for the adventurous. If seated at one of the basket tables, be sure to order a dish you are comfortable sharing with your dining companions, as most dishes are served in a large, round platter atop Ethiopian flatbread, injeera. Without fork or spoon, you'll quickly grasp the practice of tearing some injeera off to scoop up a bite. Just a word of warning: the amount of food you receive is much more filling than it appears. Be prepared to roll home pleasantly stuffed. G.T., the owner, is wonderfully hospitable and quick to provide dish suggestions. Expect to wait a bit for your meal - each dish is hand-prepared but worth the time. For a splendidly communal and delightfully hands-on eating adventure, Horn of Africa is it. Pros: great food, intimate dining, very hospitable Cons: limited seating, walls need finishing, wait for food more
