Hempfield Animal Hospital

Terrible ending to a 10+ year relationship with our vet. Took our elder dog in for review of a small lump in her side early last year. Vet eyeballed it, said it's nothing, not in an area that could be problematic. No worries. Our mistake #1 -- believing him and not insisting on a test. Our dog was seen by multiple vets here during the course of 2012 (for routine care). During this time, the bump is growing. Thing is, none of the vets notice. Why? They weren't looking at her chart at each subsequent visit. (They openly admit that this is what happened). It was not until we proactively took her back for another exam that one of the vets at this practice offered to run a test on the ""harmless lump."" Cancer. Malignant. Inoperable. In their defense, they did not charge us for the visit where they gave us the news that she is terminal. And we did get 3 weeks of pain meds for free. But they want us to pay them to put her down. Thanks. No thanks. Lesson learned the hard way -- moving on to a new vet (to make sure our OTHER dog is okay). Real shame a 10+ year relationship had to end up this way. and yes, our dog is now older but had this been handled properly, we probably would have been discussing surgical removal not pallative care. Big miss -- not testing, not looking at the charts from visit to visit...not good. Sad, sad ending. more

First of all, my husband and I are thrilled with the location of this Veterinary Hospital, it's literally 3 minutes from our house on our street! It is so convenient for us! When we rescued our first dog we were very happy with the caring staff, they were kind and helpful to us as well as the new addition to our family. They also gave us some advice for helping our adopted dog feel welcome and comfortable in our home. A year later we adopted our second dog and also took him there and once again we were more than satisfied with their caring attitudes and helpful ways. I have met two of the Vets there and both were great! My one dog ate something strange somewhere, and this foreign object became lodged in my dog's intestines. He needed to go into immediate surgery before any major damage occurred. They were very understanding and wanted to help us since we had an unexpected expense the previous month and had pretty much drained out our savings. So, they worked out a payment plan with us. I was so surprised by that, I didn't think many medical offices did that, I was also relieved that we could get the surgery our beloved dog needed! They called us when our dog went into surgery, when he came out of surgery and when he woke up. We were more than welcome to visit him and call the office as we wanted (during their normal hours). I have read some of the negative comments on this hospital and I feel that their experiences were very unfortunate. . .But, as an owner that loves my pets extremely much I feel so confident taking my current dogs and any future pets of mine to Hempfield Animal Hospital, especially after my last experience with my one dog having to have emergency surgery. more

We had already had several visits with this vet - our puppy had several issues and was known to this group. Called with an emergency - our puppy was bleeding in multiple areas, scratching everywhere, and had a new bad odor in spite of bathing. Put on hold several times, was then told to come by later and pick up a collar and then they'd let us know what, if anything, the vet would like to do. This group totally blew it. May have just been the secretary, but in either case, be careful trusting them. They may be fine for standard shots, etc. but if you have anything out of the ordinary you may just be out of luck. We're not taking any more chances with Hempfield Animal Hospital. more

No negatives about the Hempfield Animal Hospital or Dr Edkin. He's the best and treated all our pets over the years with kindness and much care. He goes the extra mile with all his patients and their owners. The facility is 5 star as well as the staff and Dr Edkin! We trust him with our pets and have for many years. Truly 5 star! more

I've found the doctors and staff to be caring, friendly, and courteous. They love animals and my animals love them. If I moved out of the area, I'd be hard pressed to find another vet this good. Pros: Convenient hours Cons: A little out of the way more

We had a loving family pet that ended a long battle with cancer, when we put her down the female veterinarian had horrible bedside manner when it came time to put our dog down. Our second experience was when our other dog received care from these vets and a major diagnosis of lymes disease was missed by their staff even when our dog we found out later had all the symptoms. This vet mistreated the dog for an infection and her kidneys and heart began to fail as a result. Shame on us for taking more than one pet to this location. Please don't make our mistake. Dr. Edkin is first class. We had to put a dog to sleep who was new to their practice. Couldn't have been more kind & considerate. more

We have found Dr. Edkin and staff to be very caring and helpful. We have many cats in our ""family"" and find that the office is most considerate when trying to schedule emergency appointments. Pros: Parking available Cons: Only one vet at present more
