Best

There is something to be said for a restaurant where people wait outside 10 min. before the doors are open to get in. I've been going to HBC for 10 years, and it's always more tha...

Worst

When you're looking for a fun place to eat and relax, this may be one of your top choices. Here, they serve up burgers along with other soul food for lunch with more complex food ...

Rude Service - Not Recommended 1/14/2005

Service can be extremely rude. On a recent occasion after a long but patient wait, we politely pointed out to the manager that others who had walked in later had been seated first. We were told, ""I have more business than I need. You can go somewhere else."" He won't have to wory about too much business from us again! Pros: Attractive, Convenient to Theater Cons: , Cramped Seating more

Consistently Good 10/27/2004

The food at Hayes Barton Cafe is some of the best available anywhere. The Goat Cheese Salad, Crab Cakes, Artichoke dip, the Meatloaf, the Coconut Cake, the fish specials. However, more than anything is the superb consistency of preparation, week after week. And we know because we go week after week. Pros: Excellent Food, Intimate, Great Staff more

Good, but could be better 5/16/2004

While the food is very good especially the deserts, I was a bit dissappointed that they charge $3 for each extra fork when ordering desert. Especially since the desert is around $7. Also the staff seemed a little disturbed when my party of two arrived at 9:05pm even though they do not close until 9:30pm. If they want to get out at 9:30pm they should close their doors at 9:00pm, otherwise serve each customer with a smile that enters up to 9:30pm. more

10 cents for a class of water 3/30/2003

I was charged 10 cents for a class of water. Never mind, that I was paying for 4 sandwiches and 3 cokes PLUS dessert... Who do they think they are? I will take my business elsewhere. more

Mmmm cake. 2/3/2003

Hayes Barton Cafe is a wonderful, quirky dinner. The menu is clever, the servings are huge, the staff is attentive, and the dessert is to die for. . A great place for a romantic dinner for two or an evening out with friends. I highly recommend Pros: Dessert, Food Cons: Parking more

Cake that's a foot tall 1/31/2003

Been in Raleigh for years and finally tried this place out. Enjoyed it, had a gouda turkey wrap, salad and amaretto cake, all of which were quality items. Seating is a bit scarce, and parking is tough, but it's cozy and simple and feels homely. They have some impressive cakes, some stand a foot tall. Pros: large portions, great salad dressing, inexpensive Cons: long line to order, cash/check only, parking sucks more

HBC...yummy! 1/20/2003

This restaurant has the most amazing entrees, salads, and of course, the desserts. Marget does an amazing job making the food and cakes, and Frank is a fab bartender, etc. Great ambiance, good music, friendly service. Must Try! Pros: Good Price, Delicious! Cons: Parking more

patty cake, patty cake, THESE BAKERS CAN 11/22/2002

I have never been disappointed in a dessert here. Beware the desserts are large. My husband and I usually share one and still take some home. Can't decide which dessert--try the Patty Cake. more

Godd but Rude 8/30/2002

The food is very good, the wait certainly acceptable, but being asked to leave when they beleive you have stayed to long...now really, where is the southern hospitality you expect inside the beltline? Pros: good food Cons: service more

Can't Be Beat 8/29/2002

The desserts here are unbelieveable. The ""Patti-Cake"" is my favorite. The service is outstanding and the food is fresh and always a treat. My favorite restaurant!!! Pros: desserts Cons: it gets crowded more

awesome desserts 8/19/2002

This restaraunt is very good.I love the home made desserts. Big and tall homemade cakesthat are so eye appealing. Pros: good priced, great tasting dessert, beautiful desserts Cons: not big enough more

Awesome Desserts! 7/27/2002

Best desserts in town. Great neighborhood restaurant with a friendly staff. more

Dessert justifies the trip 6/5/2002

The highlights of this restaurant which occupies the site of the former Hayes-Barton pharmacy are without question its outstanding desserts. The food is rather good, although simple, and makes for an excellent lunch; unfortunately the cost of dinners here is usually prohibitive, but the superb in-house desserts more than make up for this shortcoming, ranging from a myriad of rich, moist cakes to fresh fruit pies and airy mousses. The milkshakes and malts are also a must at lunch. Pros: Desserts, Service, Ambience Cons: Expensive dinners more
