On June 27, 2011 I rented, by phone, a 5"" wood chipper for two days starting the next day. When my employee went to pick up the machine he asked them to check the oil in the engine and the pressure of the tires because of bad previous experiences dealing with their equipment. My employee and his nephew both saw that the machine had dirty and insufficient oil and that the tires were not inflated properly.
In retrospect, we should've asked for the maintenance record of the machine.
My employee and his nephew used the chipper the first day with no problems. At the beginning of the second day the machine stopped working. He took it back to the rental place and was told that he had broken the drum drive belt and that the cost of it wasn't included in the Damage Waiver.
I called them as soon as I got home and heard of what happened. They refused to refund me for the second day of rental and insisted that I have to pay for the broken drum drive belt.
I looked at the contract and they have written on it the following:
""Warring damage waiver does not cover drum drive belt!!!!!
If you jam the unit and run it the belt will brake!!!!!!!.""
When I saw that warning written in the contract, which they didn't mention to me when I called to rent the machine, I realized that this happens all the time. Either the machine isn't any good or they are not maintaining it properly like they should.
By the lack of oil in the engine and proper pressure tire when we first got the machine, I am inclined to think that they do not maintain their equipment as they should and then blame the customer and expect us to pay for regular maintenance.
They would not admit the the belt is regular maintenance. They hanged up the phone on me several times and the last time they answered left me holding forever.
THESE ARE RUDE AND DISHONEST PEOPLE THAT SHOULD NOT BE RUNNING THIS BUSINESS.
Potential renters of equipment beware!
