Stop pretending to be ""nonprofit"". On a retail level, Goodwill competes unfairly with local retailers, who do not get the tax breaks, free ""community service"" labor, cheap or free rent, and DONATED merchandise. Goodwill is a huge multimillion dollar company that competes for top management talent, and has hired people away from companies such as Dillards and Winn Dixie. In many cases, Goodwill's prices are higher than the item sold for originally! Local retailers have sales and clearance items with lower prices. This shopper has observed that when an item doesn't sell at one of their 9 stores, they transport it around to other stores in nice late-model trucks, to try their luck there. If an item still doesn't sell, it ends up at the Good Cents store, where things are priced more fairly, closer to garage sale prices. Anything that doesn't sell (and has managed to survive careless handling) is taken to the dump. Goodwill spends more throwing away unsold items than most local retailers and second-hand stores make.....and I'll bet they get a ""nonprofit"" break on that expense too. Goodwill doesn't fix things or give them away if they can't be sold just as they received them. \r \r My donations will go to Children's Lighthouse, Salvation Army, or Chelsea House. I will not donate items to Goodwill, because they compete unfairly with local businesses.\r more
