it's OK this GasLite I rocked it out summer 2008 to summer of 2010 with KJ Theresa Ryan and videotaped all my songs until oneday the owner said I cannot tape my singing anymore so I stopped going there; but had good memories 2 years twice a week non stop IT IS AN OK KARAOKE BAR ON WILSHIRE more

This is a rotting dive bar with mice and flys 1/15/2012

The Kj's are terrible. The drinks are over priced and they have flies and mice. Dont go to this bar! You will regret wasting your time.. Not to mention the owner is a paranoid freek and has camara and illegal micing in the bar. she is using it to make her next documentary. NUTS NUTS NUTS more

Gaslite, the place you want to be after everything runs out 12/19/2011

This is a real fun and exciting place to go. The other reports are purely based on bogus rumers. Try this out and read all the other reviews, where there are more than just a few sour apes with literature problems. I am not a person that like to hang out at bars, however, the Gaslite made me feel welcome whenever I went there. There are some regular singers, but come-on, this is kareoke! Not American Idol! Try it, you will go again! Jake more

HORRIBLE KARAOKE FRIDAY NIGHTS - APRIL 2011 4/16/2011

Had read some decent reviews of GasLite elsewhere, so gave it a shot, Friday night April 15, 2011. WHAT A COMPLETE SHOCKING DISAPPOINTMENT. This is not to be racist by any means, but the KJ was a total rich white boy trying to be a rapper. The music was horrible. The regulars obviously take full precedence over any newcomers. We put in a song request and never got called. The same awful singers, if you can call them singers, kept singing. Had NEVER heard any of this rap music in the first place, so it wasn't even enjoyable rap, but just a lot of screaming and screeching. It felt like we went to the wrong house for someone's party - felt as if we didn't belong there, weren't welcome there, and could NOT WAIT to get the hell out of there. The KJ really seemed like a Vanilla Ice-Eminem wannabee. DO. NOT. GO. ON. FRIDAY. NIGHTS. RUN!!! more

Great Dive Karaoke Bar 6/21/2010

This place is one of the best Karaoke bars in LA. It seems to be always packed by 9:00pm or earlier. The crowd is completely random and fun. Both times I went I was completely entertained the entire time. The drinks are reasonably priced and it has a very dive feel to it. You can tell the regulars as it seems the get priority when it comes to singing. My group had a hard time actually getting called up on stage. If your on the West Side of town I would suggest stopping in. Pros: Awsome people watching Cons: Good luck if you want to sing more

who wantsa new owner for gaslight! everyone does 6/11/2010

sAhahhha I was going threw the gaslight blog andI noticed the things writen about nat. I am a bar and restaurant owner on thewestside. I love the gaslight and I think itssweet I go there all the time.however I do have to say that its such a disapointment that claire is the owner. Look at this letter she wrote in response to firing nat : I'm not sure who started the vicious rumor that Natalie was fired, but it is absolutely not true. Natalie is not an employee, and as such, she doesn't get hired or fired. She's an independent contractor, and like the other independent contractors, she is booked month-to-month on an as-needed basis. I'm sure, at times, both hosts and customers may be unhappy with a particular booking, but we honestly strive to do our best for everyone and for the business as a whole. We take pride in booking our hosts, and I think you'll have to agree, we have the best karaoke hosts around. When booking hosts, we look for team players who, instead of using the bar to promote their own personal agendas and events, promote all events at the bar. We look for hosts who are fair and who call people up in the order they sign up, and do not accept money to bump people up on the list. We look for hosts who are friendly to everyone, including both regulars and newcomers to the bar, and not just a select few. Also, as any business owner would, I personally look for hosts who are respectful of me and the decisions I make. We have a great karoake host lineup this month. We have Theresa working Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Theresa's been with us for a long time and we actually get more compliments on Theresa than on any other host, so if you aren't familiar with Theresa I suggest you come in on one of these nights. On Tuesdays we have Stoobie, on Wednesdays we have our very own bartender, Breanna, hosting, and on Saturdays we have Katie. This is a great lineup and all of these hosts seem to be very well liked by our patrons. I hope this addresses your concerns, and thank you once again for your feedback. Claire Ragge Owner What is hilarious about this claires note is that she brags about having great kjs. she wont admit to firing nat! why is that? number one natalie hired theresa! number two katie was fired she now works at backstagego see her. ""stoobie"" otherwiseknownas stu was fired and 86ixed from gaslite and he had a huge following. my girl breanna who I hang out with all the time did noting wrong and was fired and 86ixed from gaslight. Other people fired and 86xied from gaslight recintly wovoca and many others. What does this tell you ? claire does not apreciate really good employes or custumers. I went there on friday night last week with like 20 other people cuz that's how I roll and we left lol because there were 3 dudes behind the bar. who does that?hahhhaah As a bar owner I know that makes no sense.no won wants to see 3 dudes behind a bar.claire you bad mouth other bars and busineses all over the westside and people are sick of it. Its time someone told the truth about you in a publicway. The gaslight is great but youve 86xied half of santa monica so that sucks! You were lucky to have someone like nat running kareokie for your little dive. I remember when she worked there and she was amazing totaly hot and talented. your going to bad mouth other bars I wont bad mouth the gaslight because its the people there that make it cooland fun that you seem to love to fire and daspose of. I wish it had a different owner and I dont standalone on this. Do santa monica a favor and sell you busines and make everyone happy. You are not a nice person at all.ps--I was going to throw a huge party at gaslighe like I did a couple of sundays ago and packed your otherwise empty bar but I've decided to bring that busines to wherever nat or katie or stu will be kjing instead. Claire you are not nice you do not diserve gaslight. All you dois hate on other bars and try to distroy busines Pros: everything but claire Cons: claire more

Sticky, Smelly, Good Time 4/23/2010

This place is a total dive, but a great place to gi with a bunch of friends, throw one back, and laugh your ass off. If you're looking for a place to have a good time on the westside, it definitely deserves STRONG consideration. Pros: Entertainment, Price more

Karaoke, drinks and racial Profiling 1/16/2010

If you want to karaoke in Santa Monica The Gaslite is not the place to go. Their sound system sucks (it broke down twice). Their mics are god awful and most importantly their wait staff is the worst. I and my man friend were sitting at a table and the waitress approaches us and ask us if we wanted something to drink. We said sure. I order a coke because i do not drink. The young lady asked me if it is cash or open a tab. I said cash. She said you must pay up front. I found this to be very hard to comprehend. Every bar I have gone to in and outside the country you pay after you get your drinks. She said that this is the owners rules. So I paid ahead of time. I asked the people at the table I was sitting at did she ask you to pay ahead of time and he said no. Now there was only two differences between he and i ! He was male and he was Caucasian. I have had heard of racial profiling when the law is concerned but not when it comes to karaoke and drinks. Now the fun did not stop there. The same and only waitress working on 01/15/2010 continuously kept asking us to relinquish our table. ""There are people outside that really want a table"" So my question is why is that my problem and why do you keep coming to us. My table consisted of 4 people and there were table where there were only two patrons at them. Why did she keep coming back to us. hhhhmmmm Now I am not daft I know the main goal is to making money but you do not make tips and money by treating your patron like they are not wanted. Oh yes and the waitress said that the owner told her to ask for the table. I really question the owner and his/her morals. If you condone Prejudice behavior and bad quality entertainment by all means go to the Gaslite. Pros: The security is nice Cons: everything else more

Good karaoke, bad service 6/14/2008

A decent place for karaoke, however waitresses/bartenders are often downright rude. After giving $1 tip per beer for 7 beers and then skipping once, the bartender told me my next beer would cost $1 extra due to my lack of tip. I strongly suggest picking up a 6 pack at walgreens across the street rather than paying $7 for a bottled beer at this place. Pros: Karaoke Cons: Parking, Service more

BEST KARAOKE EVER!!! 6/12/2008

I don't know what santamonicacares on this site is talking about! The Gaslite has the best karaoke in santa monica. Sounds like you are a bitter person who doesn't know how to project into a mic. The KJ's rock (especially the chicks!!!!) Great in between music and they are so fun!! RUN to this place...it ROCKS! Pros: Karaoke Hosts, Karaoke selection, Bartenders !!!! Cons: parking more

Go anytime there's no Karaoke running 11/15/2006

The bar is a Westside legend and the staff is cool. "Open at 6:00 a.m."! At the same time, if you're looking to sing go anywhere else for Karaoke. The KJ is the absolute worst in West LA. She not only bumps anyone else when her friends show up, but she also mics her buddies up while she drops the levels for everyone else to barely audible. It is a total Karaoke embarassment. There's just too many good Karaokes around Santa Monica to allow yourself to be treated as poorly as the Gaslight's KJ treats anyone who doesn't make her "friend" list. Pros: Great Parking, Great Bartenders Cons: Awful Karaoke more

It was alright 5/22/2006

Place was ok. It was dark, kinda empty and had karioke. There wasnt that many people and no beers on tap. It had a few booths to sit in but the bar mostly took over the seating. I put my name down on the karioke list but it took to long. Beers were kinda pricy for a small local place. I paid 5 bucks for a sierra nevada and 4 bucks for a bud light. The bartender was friendly and so were the people. It was cool but they're other better places. Pros: Spot on the bar, Big karioke song list Cons: Too Dark more

Love this place.... 4/14/2006

I'm from the midwest and only have occasion to get to LA once in awhile. Have been in LA 3 times in the last 5 or 6 years. Went to this place first in '00, '03 and '05. Found the Gas Lite first time...made sure I got back every time since. Classic neighborhood bar with a mixed patronage...all ages, so as one of the "older" crowd, I didn't feel the least bit out of place. I miss Melora, behind the bar, but the karaoke is great...all patrons are friendly and approachable. Drinks are reasonably priced. If you're a singer, go early, sing often...gets crowded later. Next time I'm in LA, I'll be back at the Gas Lite. more

Gaslite DJ ruined my birthday 3/31/2006

Went to GasLite Tuesday, and it was fun - good female DJ, sound, book, friendly crowd... I picked it for my Thursday birthday party. Big mistake. That DJ, a gangsta wannabe, on about ""bein' a playa"", had friends sing all night. After three hours I asked to see where we were on the list, and he lied to me, saying, ""I'm following it"" But none of the only fifteen songs up before us had played. Place half emptied by 10:30, people who signed and got bored, their names crossed out. Only songs - rap and radio pop for his crowd. DJ didn't do sound - busy outside. Regular walks in - sings within minutes. (Besides being unfriendly, the leftover crowd was unattractive.) Guy is a ""bringer"" DJ, if you see him, go elsewhere. more

DJ plays favorites with patrons 3/30/2006

Went on a Thursday night, signed up our songs at 9:30 PM. By 12:30 only the one female in our group had gotten to sing. During that time, the same three nineteen year-old women sang at least 3-4 times each. One "regular" arrived at 12:00 and was on stage by 12:15. All this time the DJ, obviously lying through his teeth, was claiming he was "just going down the list." The karaoke was badly mixed, the songs between the karaoke were twice as loud as the karaoke songs. What a terrible disappointment given the glowing reviews here. By the way, the crowd is also all frat boys with baseball caps on backwards and their dim witted female friends -- so be warned. Pros: large song book Cons: terrible DJ more

good times!! 2/9/2006

This is the place for a good time! It's a mixed crowd and everyone has fun. Great crowd for karaoke. I wish I lived closer, I would go back often! Pros: great crowd, strong drinks more

i love this place! 6/15/2003

my friends and i love this very laid back place. we can rock on stage or kick back in a booth... karaoke nights are very fun! Pros: strong drinks, great wait service more

A hilarious blast 10/4/2002

We got there early, so saw a dingy neighborhood bar with red lights and tinsel...but by 10 p.m., we were lucky we got there early and had a table! What a mix of people! What great singers and what....people of character! Fabulous singers mixed with "just folks", college co-eds with older folks, and everyone was having a blast. Great singers were lauded, as were the merely the brave and bold. Fun dancing too, solo, couples, or groups. Decent drink prices too! Definitely going back soon. Pros: Fun atmosphere, Offbeat, Friendly Cons: Parking, Long singing line more

for the crooners 5/14/2002

Went here on a whim. It was fun as hell. Christmas decorations year round, so lots of glitter but no glam. more

  • The Scene
This dimly lit, corner bar borrows its decor scheme from a '70s-era lounge during Christmas season, with twinkling lights and tinsel hanging year round. Red vinyl booths, mirrored walls and a long, dark wood bar round out the modest and masculine interior. A no-nonsense bartender pours martinis and scotch to a mostly male crowd playing interactive trivia during the day. By 10pm, the place is overrun with a lively UCLA crowd pounding beers and dancing the night away.

    The Draw
Catch talented blues artists every Friday through Monday night. The intimate setting promotes an infectious musical energy, and after a few tunes, most of the crowd is clapping along with the band. On weekends, the dance floor is packed, and it's standing room only by 11pm. Karaoke nights, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, attract talented baritones and drunken warblers alike. Amateur comics perform on Wednesdays.
