Service vastly improved - Still have to watch charges closel 10/8/2010

I've been shopping at this store for several years, and the service has improved hugely since the last reviewer wrote in 2009. Thank you management! Clerks are mostly friendly (there is one who must not like her job) and staff is helpful, going out of their way at times to respond to customer questions or check the back when a bulk bin is empty. On the other hand, recently I was charged $34 for three peaches. That one was easy to catch before leaving the store, but smaller overcharges and double charges are more difficult to identify, and they happen with some regularity. You do have to watch the ring-ups as they are happening, which is difficult when you are also trying to bag your own groceries in a confined space. Not all items are called out on the receipt by name, so it is very difficult to tell whether you are being charged correctly on some. It is not unusual for a clerk to include an item we did not bring to the counter but was apparently left there by someone else. Yesterday my housemate came home with a bag of hamburger buns (we never buy them). You have to watch what goes in your bag. One more thing: The clerks are not well-trained for bagging, so if they take over, watch that they're not putting your bananas, mangoes and tomatoes on the bottom of the bag beneath heavier stuff. Happens all the time. Glad to see attitude toward customers has improved in the last year and a half. Now if the bagging and ringing up can improve, this will be a great little neighborhood store to shop in and to share with friends. more

Rip off 5/29/2009

As some of you have noticed, this is a very expensive store and, as I have discovered recently, there are two reasons for that: not only are the prices higher than other stores for the same merchandise but also some of the cashiers are ripping people off. I will give you two examples. The first one is a $56 bill with a $20 item which the cashier couldn't find any explanation for. The second one is more subtle as there is another cashier who seems to systematically ring the same item twice, once at the beginning and then once towards the end so it is not easily noticeable. The reason for that, according to this cashier, is ""the system"" - whatever that means! I would advise that if you shop there regularly, you check your bill carefully in the store before going back home. I have fortunately been only shopping there for a few months because it is conveniently located at walking distance from my place. Could somebody recommend a trustworthy store in the neighborhood which carries organic produce? Thanks. more

Good local organic produce- but mostly rude staff and you pay a price for convience 1/16/2009

I live in Cole Valley and shopping here is much more convienant than shelping to Whole Foods or Rainbow, BUT you do pay a price. Their produce is beautiful and always from local farms- something that I love supporting but their prices can be ridiculous. I have shopped for organic food all over San Francisco and have found that you will always get a better deal at Farmers' Markets or Rainbow, while still being fair to the farmer, than here. Like most people who shop organic, I am used to and happy to pay more for no pesticides, but this place can really gouge you. The staff leaves alot to be desired- more often than not, they are aloof and arrogant bordering on downright rude but sometimes you catch the odd nice checkout person who knows what a 'smile' is- however, I have noticed that the nice people don't last... weird. The vitamin store is another story with reasonable prices, almost always friendly and helpful staff and hard to find items.. go figure. if you just can't bear to drive to Rainbow to deal with their obnoixous staff and you have to have that organic watermelon, go here - but expect to pay a price. WARNING! Do NOT park next to the yellow curb- its always open and is very enticing but don't do it! - even for a that quick rush in, a woman in front of me was given a very large ticket- its a loading zone and the cashier told us that a new very dedicated parking lady is making her career by giving multiple tickets there-it's not worth it! Park at Walgreens and walk. Pros: great local organic produce, fresh and lovely Cons: no parking, often rude staff, high prices more

terrible customer service 6/17/2007

I live a few blocks away from Real Foods and often stop by on my way home for the awesome fresh produce this store carries. At first I thought the cashier was having a bad day when I was being checked out but have come to realize that every time I finish my shopping and go to pay the service is downright rude. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth seeing that the produce and products they carry are well worth the extra cost compared to the other local markets, however, I much prefer to shop at the Alpha store where I am greeted with a smile and feel like a 'neighbor'. At Real Foods I've been ignored and have been made to feel like it is an inconvenience to bag my groceries and ring me up. Not even a hello or goodbye...now I only go for the beautiful fresh flower bunches they carry. Pros: great produce Cons: rude service more
