If the James Beard Foundation Loves It... 5/14/2010

Athens culinary guru Hugh Acheson's calls 5&10 his home-base, consistently shilling amazing high-brow grub, 86 the pretense. Southern flare comes with every dish including the addicting Frogmore stew and deep fried sweetbreads to be washed down by classic, from-scratch cocktails or a bottle off the ultra-savvy wine list. It is THE place in town to impress a date, spoil out-of-towners, or simply sidle up to the bar and indulge yourself. When (not if) you go, try some of pastry chef Shae's homemade ice creams with local fruit pies and tarts. Pros: Expert takes on local, seasonal ingredients Cons: High Pricetag prohibits many monthly visits more

Best in Athens 1/23/2007

I went to Five and Ten on a very special evening, on my fiance's thirtieth birthday right after we got engaged. Due to the events of the evening, I had to push the reservations back twice, but they were very accomodating. They gave us complimentary champagne when we arrived and a dessert at the end of the evening. All of this, plus the food and atmosphere were excellent. The duck risotto was unique, flavorful and made just right. Risotto usually takes a lot of time and can be a mistake to order at restaurants, but Five and Ten's was excellent. The decor is understated and simple, but pleasant. It is like Atlanta fine dining, at Athens prices Pros: Service, food, value more

Love Five and Ten! 11/15/2006

Five and Ten is the best! They have a fantastic brunch, for those that don't want to dill out the extra cash for dinner. Go here and you won't be disappointed. more

Truly one of the best dining experiences in town 8/22/2006

From the moment you walk in the door, the experience is outstanding. I have dined here three times over the past year or so and have been pleased every time. From the creative menu offerings to palate boggling desserts to incredible staff, this is the place to dine in town. Admittedly, it is not a $1.99 blue plate special type place- Know that going in. However, because of that fact, one can enjoy a quaint atmosphere void of patrons stopping by because ""pitchers are half price"". The perfect romantic dinner spot or celebrate a birthday establishment. (You have to save room for dessert!) Pros: Not a bad choice on the menu; no parking hassles more

Best 5/4/2006

Five and Ten is the best in Athens! They always have the freshest food and best service. I try to eat here at least once a month. more

Great place! 10/5/2005

I love this restaurant! Their brunch is to die for and I always know I can count on the best from the kitchen. The wait staff is always helpful in wine pairing and helping pick out cheeses from their roatating selection. This is hands down the best place in Athens. more

Great little place 1/25/2005

Hands down, the best restuarant in Athens! Love the food and wine selections! more

great little spot 6/9/2003

I drove from atlanta to ry this place and it was well worth the trip. The torchon of foie gras was perfect, we shared a lot of apps and they were all great. Service was great, I did not expect servers in a little town to know so much about the 12 strong cheese selection. After a nice day in athens this is the perfect relaxed end to it. Highly recommended. Pros: atmosphere, service, food more

Good, not great 8/24/2002

I have to say that I was underwhelmed, given all the hype. This is an above-average restaurant, but not a destination. The space is pleasingly casual-chic, though we sweated through our meal on the patio (ceiling fans didn't provide enough breeze). The beverage list is creative, from the house-made lemonade to the interesting wines by the glass. Our starter salads were both delicious - greens with plums, fennel and Vidalias; and a light Caesar. My monkfish entree with saffron, olives and couscous was delicately flavored and perfectly cooked, but my husband was disappointed in his steak frites - lukewarm and very bland. Each of my cheeses on the cheese plate was wonderful, but his ""campfire tart"" (a s'more for adults) was over-rich. Service is sweet but spacey. I'd eat here again if I were in Athens, but would not make the drive from Atlanta. Pros: Great wine list, often superb cooking, comfortable ambiance Cons: Clumsy service, some mediocre dishes more
