This is the place in Eugene to buy comics, graphic novels, role playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons), collectible cards, and anime. Since 1972, Emerald City has been the place where kids and adults can buy, talk, trade and revel in comics, fantasy and science fiction.
The selection is very good, and ranges from used Archie and Scrooge McDuck to very mature material. Paper printed, posters, figurines, stuffed toys, action figures and games can be purchased.
Overall the service is good. They offer pre-order and special order services, and also can help hook you up with groups who share your collecting or gaming interests. Check the bulletin boards for posting of special events and additional items for sale.
If you've ever watched "The Simpsons" TV show, you may think Comic Book Guy is modelled after some of the more mature sales persons. Thank heavens that's a minor problem (and they have added female staffers) -- but it is irritating to have a few guys show such little respect for women who do know their comics, artists and the comic-book culture. Our family has spent a bundle here over the years, and I've been a customer since day one...so what is it with these fellas? Anyway, I appreciate most of the staff, and continue to hope there's hope for the few unenlightened...
Parking can be difficult, since the building is right on campus at 770 East 13th. Emerald City is in the same building with Smith Family Bookstore, so it's well worth paying to park and spending some time in both shops. It's right on the UofO bus line, so take mass transit and avoid the parking issue altogether!
