Relaxing change of pace 12/15/2008

Doughertys is a place that is welcoming and unusual. This is not your typical trendy downtown bar, more of a place where you go when you need a change of pace. I have been going to this bar for years and love the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and you can always pick out the regulars. The food is a great choice expecially now with the economy falling. The food is regular pub food, burgers fries great specials. For those of you who didnt know a lot of the stuff is homemade. The desserts are all homemade, the soups are amazing and homemade as well. Since the ban on smoking it has been a lot nicer and more enjoyable to to sit and relax without having to deal with the stench afterward. Parking can be tough if you arent from the neighborhood, but it is within a 5 minute walk from the light rail which is great. The atmosphere is nice at lunch because you are able to appreciate the artwork that is for sale on the walls. Try something new for a change and stop is a see for your self! more

Great regular hangout. 10/23/2008

I've been going to this pub now for over a year and while it's not trendy like some places in Baltimore feel the extreme need to be, it's quite comfortable enough to frequent a couple times a week. As others have mentioned the service is sometimes irregular, but on the whole I haven't had problems. Definite Cheers feeling as there are a lot of regulars and it's easy to carve your niche and feel at home. The clientele is always diverse - I balk at the other reviewer's post about poor service due to their race - again, please chalk that up to the individual server, not the establishment (who has employed a black bartender for years). Also the pool area in the back is fun, you get all manner of people in there on the weekends and they hold league matches on Tuesdays. All in all it's a great place to spend a Friday or Saturday, hell I've even taken my parents there for dinner on a Tuesday. Cheers mate! more

some tips 2/19/2007

there are booths but often they are all filled, so don't get your hopes up before you get there. even if you don't get a booth there are a bunch of tables, so it's not all stools or standing. the pool tables are in pretty good shape although one was out of order last time i was there, but it's cool because they're in another room. you can hunker down for a serious game of pool without too many drunken rowdies, or you can bring your entire party back there for a drunken rowdy pool game. also despite what the description says DO NOT PARK AT RITE AID! YOU WILL BE TOWED EVENTUALLY! it's not worth the risk. baltimore city loves to tow cars. find street parking, walking won't hurt you. all in all, a cheers-type atmosphere. not the best service but a good selection of beers on tap, and skilled bartenders. recommended! Pros: good food, laidback, fair prices, spacious but not scary big Cons: uneven service, sometimes you can stand at the bar for 20 minutes without being seen more

Bad Experience 4/2/2006

I have been going to Dougherty's Pub for years so I was very disappointed with my recent experience at the Pub. Two friends and myself decided to stop for a quick drink and a quick bite to eat on Saturday April 1st. We had the worst waitress ever. She spent more time talking on the phone and friends than she did patrons. When we called her for the check she accused us of yelling at her. The worst part of the story is when we called the manager he didn't even ask us what was the problem. He stated "If you have a problem with our establishment please do not come back." I am a repeat customer who has never had a problem before. I wonder if because we were only three of a few black customers in the Pub was the reason we received such treatment. more

They've Brightened Up 9/1/2003

Our first visit here was a pleasant experience. This pub is not snug, but pleasantly expansive and bright. Some serious pool gets shot in the back room if my observation of players entering with their personal cues is accurate. A solid draft beer selection including Guinness and Harp. The food was pub grub--filling and tasty. The prices were low-moderate, a relief to my wallet considering I had my family in tow. Will return, for sure. Pros: Draft beer selection, Foods more

Editorial
  • The Scene
You might want to bring a flashlight. The house lights are dim, to say the least, in this popular Bolton Hill pub frequented by students from Maryland Institute College of Art. For-sale paintings line the walls of the roomy front area, while the semi-hidden back room has two pool tables but not much else. The long bar has a bronzed metallic surface that is simultaneously intriguing and unsettling.

    The Booze
The back-lit bar is well-stocked and nicely arranged, with all your favorite Glens, Jacks and Jims. If beer is your poison, Dougherty's has ever-trendy Yuengling, Pete's, Killians, Guinness, and Miller Lite on tap. Draft prices are very affordable, running about $2 a glass and $6 or so for a pitcher, depending on the day's specials.

    While You're There
Relax. Dougherty's has a nice row of booths, something missing from Baltimore's table-and-stool norm.
