Great Place!! 8/24/2011

When I go out to eat, I expect to pay a lot for my meal. I also expect to get a lot of food for that money. I'm a bit of a foodie and only want the best. Well, this place did deliver a great meal that I really enjoyed, only the portion was so small that I left feeling hungry still. The price wasn't worth the meal. However, the ambiance is very nice. more

DOSA IS HORRIBLE! 10/10/2010

DOSA IS HORRIBLE! The food is totally OVERPRICED and OVERRATED! The staff is not seasoned and experienced, and the restaurant is way too noisy. \r \r And whatever you do, DON'T EVER host a dinner party there. They have NO IDEA what they're doing. My dinner party was unbelievably EMBARRASSING! It was SO humiliating to arrange and bring a large group into the restaurant only to have Dosa fail me on every level. \r \r The food was horrible that night (slapped onto big plates with no garnishes and POOR taste), portions were tiny (i.e. not enough food for the # of people), the main chef wasn't there, they had no idea what they were doing, there was NO extra effort made for our huge group, and they forced us to leave our tables before our party was over to accommodate another reservation. \r \r My guests left hungry (couldn't eat the TERRIBLE food but didn't want to embarrass me further by complaining - although they all spoke out the next day and will be posting reviews themselves). I complained that night and the next day, but they still charged over $3K for this dinner (however, this is not over). It was a complete waste of money and a TOTAL DISASTER!!!!!!!!!! \r \r AVOID DOSA! DON'T PAY for BAD food and a horrible experience! \r \r They fed me a bunch of baloney that they'd fix the situation, but they're trying to slime their way out of honoring their promises which is disgraceful. \r \r There are too many other great restaurants in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Dosa doesn't deserve the patronage. more

amazing food 4/2/2010

The food here is absolutely amazing and everyone should try this place atleast once... i'm sure you'll want to come back. I've heard that there can be a wait, but I went on a Wednesday around 8 and I did not have to wait at all. The staff are really friendly and the service is quick. Pros: food, large tables, spacious, staff more

A delicious dinner 10/29/2009

I loved dinner at Dosa last night! The food is really interesting and delicious. I had the persimmon salad, which was excellent if a bit small, and the Chana Masala dosa. The dosa was large enough to make up for the salad, and the chutneys to slather on it were delicious and just spicy enough to make it fun. Service was very attentive and friendly too. However, the music was turned up a bit too loud around 8:00 PM, and I could hardly hear my dinner date. Still, I would go back in a heartbeat. Pros: Excellent flavors, reasonable prices and servings Cons: Too loud after 8:00 more

Sodium overdose 4/20/2009

We were there Saturday evening for dinner. The place was packed. We were happy to find a parking space nearby as we had been told that this is the place for good dosa. Needless to say, we were in for utmost disappointment. The Spring Masala was a form of taco wrapped with little vegetable inside and practically was very soggy. This came with masala (ground cashew nuts) and tomato & fresh coconut chutney and sambar (lentil dipping soup). The chutney is so salty & spicy that we could hardly discern any other flavor. The same goes for the sambar. The Paper Masala is a large crepe that was served rolled up on a plate with a small bowl of creamy spiced potatoes, masala, and chutney. The crepe is fairly crispy, but it is also salty as well as the creamy spiced potatoes. We can not understand how this restaurant gets such good review. Is this the one time that the cook heavy-handed with the salt or is this the normal practice? The amount of sodium in these dishes is a thousand times more than daily recommended amount for healthy eating. Cons: one of worst meal more

Great spot on Fillmore 1/5/2009

Recently went to the new location on Fillmore St and I can't say enough great things about this place. Personally, I don't love traditional Indian food. But, Dosa is anything but traditional! Everything we ordered had the most amazing fusion of flavors! My favorite was the persimmon salad!!! My husband and I grabbed a seat at the bar on a busy Sat night...the service was amazing and so were the cocktails. Absolutely gorgeous interior that looks like something out of a Baliwood film. Can't wait to head back with friends! more

Beautiful Space, Delicious Food & Superior Service 11/30/2008

We stopped by late on a Sunday night and were delighted by the food, service and surroundings. The prawn masala with coconut rice0, chicken appetizer & paper dosa were all amazing! We'll be back next time we're in town! Pros: ambience, food, service and price more

Test passed: Authentic tasting South Indian food! 5/6/2008

Went to Dosa with my lovely friend from Kerala and her 11 year old daughter who grew up in India, and both had just returned from a visit back home and were homesick. Impressing them with authentic South Indian Cusine is a tall order but I took the plunge! They were very happy with the fair, and quite impressed with the authentic taste. They concede that is a slight Western twist to the dishes, but they welcomed it. Recommend the Chennai chicken, and th Masala dosas. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: Intimidating menu - I had a guide! No way to get in on a Friday or Saturday! come early! more

Great SOUTH Indian food 3/4/2008

I frequent a large number of restaurants in the city, enjoying the diversity of flavors available in this small menagerie of food and cultures. There is a long wait, yes and it can take a bit to get your food, but a lot of the reviews before mine seem to give a sour image to this restaurant. Comparing the prices to what you would pay in India is just ridiculous, two different lifestyles. Yes it's indian food but this is still America, so keep in mind the prices will reflect as much. There is a massive amount of diversity in the tastes, ordering several dishes is recommended so you can get as many tastes as possible. Do yourself a favor and go check it out for yourself. Just go early, the wait can get you. Pros: great food and awesome bar!! Cons: the wait and the snotty staff more

Brace your taste buds!! 2/15/2008

I love indian food and this place made it hard to do so. If you are into using so many spices that you cannot taste the food then go for it! If you order lamb, good luck, cuz your taste buds, after being assaulted by so many spices, will be hard pressed to find the subtle flavors of the meat. If the meat was cheap and I was trying to make something good out of something bad or cheap, then I would say this place excels at that. Pros: bar manager is great!!! and cute!! Cons: the servers are stuck up mission hipsters who are unfriendly more

Best Southern Indian 1/15/2008

This place has the best uttappam I've had since I was in Bangalore. Definitely a nice change of pace from the mostly mediocre Northern Indian restaurants in the city. Very good. more

solid indian, limited in a way 12/23/2007

this is a good place, especially if you're into vegetarian meals. limited amount of curries, but different types of dosas (duh) which makes it different. probably some of the best dosas i had because the sambers are really good. the curries are really good too, as well as the beer selection which is unique. \r \r 2 issues: 1. the rice with curries doesn't taste like basmatti, or it's super overcooked...everytime i've been there it's been like this 2. what's up with requiring a credit card to place a take out order or make a reservation? seriously what's the deal with that...like if i cancel they'll charge me?! don't know if that's true, but the credit card requirement is rediculous. and i tried to push back a reservation, and for some reason that was an impossible task. but even with these annoyances, i still go. Pros: great dosas, great atmosphere, good beer selection Cons: credit card to make reservations and place take out, stupid policy to change reservations more

Too Costly, Less Quantity, Not worth for the money 12/2/2007

1) The People who dont know about the real value of South Indian Food are being cheated in this place. For a masala dosa which is 1.99 bucks in Fremont Udupi Palace or Hyderabadi Biriyani house, they are charging 11 bucks. \r 2) the name is ""south Indian Restaurant"", but they play North Indian Songs(Hindi) which is very irritating.\r 3) The taste is not bad, but the quantity they give for the money we pay is too less.\r 4) The wait time is more than the time it took to reach the place from my starting place(san Francisco City).\r 5) Readers of this comment do not get cheated by visiting this place. Its a humble request. I ended up spending 30 bucks for a masala dosa n uttapam, whereas in Coimbatore, India I would be spending 20 Rupees, which is equivalent to 0.50 cents in US Dollars for much more quantity. \r 6) If You would like to visit South Indian restaurants try Hyderabadi biriyani house or Komala vilas in Fremont. I am not a franchisee or member of the above restaurants, but just a customer like You Pros: Nothing Cons: Cost, Quality vs Quantiy, Wait time, again cost, area more

Long Wait, Bad Customer Service 10/19/2007

I have to say they have good food, but the long wait and they didn't even apologize when they knew exactly they were wrong. I wouldn't get too mad if the person (the guy who sat us after 50mins wait) didn't say some ridiculous word like ""I'm sorry for the wrong perception"" BTW, they sat another group ahead of us although we already waited for more 45 mins. Just because we ordered food in the bar (well because we were hungry it's already 930pm). That's not a perception, it's real. He should just the ""F%^&*"" up and apologized. I would be in the better mood. The waitress didn't do a good job either, our DOSA didn't come out until we told her we were still waiting. My friend's wine glass was taken off from the table although we still had approximately half a bottle of wine. Don't come to Dosa if you are in the bad mood like me, since they will give you worse mood ever. Even the good food not going to save them Pros: Food Cons: Bad Service, Long Wait, the servers talked too much and weren't attentive more

Long wait, good food 9/24/2007

You can't really hold the long waits against them, it's a sign of how good the food is. Normally I wouldn't like something this trendy, but it is refreshing by normal Indian restaurant standards. The food is very good, they get the basics right. Dosa's and idli sambar were great, as good as the places in the south bay, except with much better service and ambiance. Beware of the long wait for a table.\r \r Oh, and they need to get a real bar, Soju s*cks! Pros: Food, service, ambiance Cons: long wait more
