COFFEE JUNKIE! 7/19/2010

I stopped by because I LOVE Dominican Coffee and the location was convenient. I am a coffee junkie and I am ADDICTED to Starbucks. I chose this over Starbucks because of the free wifi and the place is big and comfy. I was PLEASANTLY surprised!! I ordered the vanilla latte. It was the best cup of coffee I have ever had. Full of flavor but not overly strong. The temperature was perfect- you don't burn your tongue with the first sip and the wifi was pretty rapid. It was a bit noisy and there was a long line but that only means people like them. It is good for study groups and meetings. I like the art on the wall and I like that is supports Dominican Republic...I have been to D.R. and they need the help! LOVE the coffee and service...will be back for sure! Pros: Coffee, Cozy, Friendly Cons: Busy, Crowded more

Good Coffee Shop, Small Improvements Needed 1/30/2008

I really enjoy spending time at Dominican Joe. The coffee is excellent and they have some decent snacks available. It has an excellent atmosphere 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time I find myself staring at whatever vagrant has stumbled in to the shop. It wouldn't be so distracting, except it seems to happen every time. And these aren't quiet, God-fearing homeless. These are clinically insane homeless that may or may not believe they are God. There are several that are regulars, one of which likes to see how long he can take to walk down the 4 steps in the middle of the coffee shop, as if he were in slow motion. I am sympathetic to the homeless and their problems, but only to the extent that I don't have to see or deal with them. Especially when they aren't spending money, they're just creaping out the patrons. Other than this, Dominican Joe is excellent. Pros: Great Coffee, Service and supports a great cause Cons: Homeless People. Maybe if they were dominican it would be ok? but they aren't more

quiet cool coffee place 6/23/2007

This is a quiet, cool coffee place right off S Congress. I have been all over Austin, at lots of coffee places, and this one is one of the quietest. Free wireless, nice polite staff. They are so quiet I worry about their volume and how they pay their rent. Get the flan latte, as user below pointed to me, its outstanding. Pros: quiet - good coffee Cons: not much food. definitely need more snack stuff. more

Good service 5/15/2007

Great coffee, good service, nice place to spend time. Do not agree with posting marked ""bad homelss experience."" Don't let that idiotic, narrow minded, self-centered individual's rating spoil opinion of this place. You really should check it out! more

Homeless Experience 4/12/2007

Ok, so I've studied here several times, everything seemed great: coffee's good, lots of plugs for my laptop, etc. But the last, and final time, I went to grab a drink and study a bit with a friend, I had a rather negative experience. As I'm talking with my friend, I notice a highly pungent, extremely foul odor near me. Finally I turn around and realize the smell is coming from a homeless man sitting three feet behind me at a nearby table. My friend, thinking I knew the guy was there the whole time, told me that this fellow had been let in by the staff and allowed to stay. Feeling extremely uncomfortable by the fact that my request to have the guy escorted out would not be well taken, as well as unable to concentrate on anything other than the noxious smell permeating the air, we left and I am definitely not returning since I don't look forward to having another study session ruined thanks to Dominican Joe's staff. Pros: Plugs, coffee Cons: Homeless people invited in to ruin your day more

Best Coffee Shop, My New Favorite 12/1/2006

Austin's newest and best coffee shop, Dominican Joe, is a great place to meet friends. It is conveniently located and is not only spacious, but enjoyable. The large tables make it easy to work, but the smaller ones create a more intimate space. I recently heard author Michele Wucker and it was very pleasant. There was plenty of space without disturbing other patrons. The staff is friendly and helpful and there are always new things to explore that always have a global significance. Mehul and Sharla have done Austin a great service and hopefully Austin is doing a great service for the people of the Dominican Republic by drinking coffee there. more

Best Coffee in Austin 12/1/2006

Dominican Joe rocks! The coffee is some of the best I've had. Highly recommend the white chocolate mocha! I'm a tea snob and these guys have some very high quality loose leaf specialty tea which is so hard to come by in Austin. The recent food additions to the menu are pretty tasty had 2 diff kind both good. more

A Definite 10! 12/1/2006

I like the atmosphere at Dominican Joe's. It is relaxed, chill and there is always a friendly face there. more

Favorite Coffee Shop in Austin 12/1/2006

DJ is first and foremost so great because the money goes to a really good cause. I can go in there and get whatever I feel like without feeling guilty about my budget. Plus, I have found two of my favorite drinks there. They have a wide variety of options, and more then once, they have made speciality drinks to accommodate my requests. The staff is friendly, quick, flexible, and always willing to do what is necessary for customer satisfaction. I have found Dominican Joes to be a place where I can study (they have free wireless and lots of space) but also a place for entertainment. I have met many friends for conversation over coffee and I have also enjoyed myself at the small musical events they hold on special occasions. It is such a diverse place that is a true asset to the city of Austin!! more

Love This Place 12/1/2006

Dominican Joe coffee shop has captured my heart in that when I am ready to get out of the house, I always think of DJ. After the kids are in bed, hubby and I sneak away for an hour or so to kick back on the futon and enjoy a hot cup of flavor and relaxation from a REAL, snuggle-up, large, mug (not paper cup). The atmosphere is easy and quiet. The flavors are unique and festive. From comfy couches to lap-top tables to patio settings, it's all there. A great place to plug-in or unplug. It's just what I need after a long hectic day. more

Great Place 12/1/2006

The atmosphere is good ? not too loud and not too quiet, with nice big tables to spread out any work on, comfortable areas to hang out with friends, and a great patio for when the weather is nice. The staff is extremely friendly, and more importantly, the coffee is great too. more

Amazing Coffee! 12/1/2006

Definitely would give Dominican Joe a 10! The coffee is amazing and the atmosphere of the shop is very nice. The pictures of the children around the coffee shop are really neat. I also like the fact that when I buy coffee from them I know it is for a good cause. more

Perfect for Students 11/27/2006

As a college student, this place is perfect. It has a great quiet and relaxing space for studying and I don't feel like I am spending too much of my precious money. Great coffe, more of it, at lower prices - I would choose to go here over Starbucks any day, especially when I know I'm helping out Dominican kids! more
