I've lived within 1 mile of Delta Cafe for the past five years. After seeing the lines of people in front waiting to get in, I finally went for myself. I'm sad to say that the f...

Funky Southern Fun with Great Food. 4/12/2011

A very funky place with extremely great southern food. Our waiter was a great help and made us laugh. We were there on a Monday evening and it was just great....but I have a feeling this place is hopping on the weekends. I had wonderful Chicken Fried Steak and My husband had the Catfish. Both really great. My mother had the fried chicken and said it was really tasty and juice all enclosed by a tasty outer crust. I am now a huge fan of Collard Greens. It was a great birthday pick. more

I almost went to jail because of how rude the waiter was!!! 3/17/2011

Went to eat dinner on St. Patty's day with my wife and kids. From the jump the waiter was possibly the lamest person I have ever had serve me...and I have had some winners...he was rude and acted as if we were ruining his day by being there to eat. We shrugged it off and figured we just wouldn't tip the clown. Now here is where I made a mistake...we approach raising our kids in a more...say European manner..and a sip of beer at home with dinner every once in a while..to take the taboo out of the experience is how we choose to deal with trying to help our kids being binge drinkers. So we made the mistake of thinking that since it is LEGAL at home..and yes it is legal is the USA to do so...we have always thought it was legal at a restaurant. Well it is not and if the waiter would of informed us of this we would of gladly apologized ( for me allowing our 14yrs old to sip my wife's drink) and then researched once home and if finding out he was correct never do it again as it is not our intention to get an establishment in trouble with the law. BUT HIS RESPONSE WAS TO YELL AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS AT OUR TABLE...""No no no...are you kidding me?"" Then he came and took my wife's drink away. His tone and movements were not only rude but to my wife they were threatening. Needless to say this evolved into me having some words with him and almost getting into a fist fight. The cops were called and no charges were filled against me. Even if I had been charged with harassment..which the waiter has the option to pursue..I would have been fine with it. Yelling at a man's wife and kids? Really? It wasn't me this time..but I have a feeling if the management at Delta doesn't improve their servers people skills.. somebody else may end up having the cops called on them. Worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant!!!!! My best friend..Big Papa R.I.P. started Papa's Soul Food Kitchen in Eugene, Oregon and it is the most successful spot in town...great food...wonderful people..and no hipster attitude. If you want good soul food...make sure it really has some soul!! This review was written by Elijah Mack, Master Barber and founder of Mos Faded Barbershop in Eugene Oregon. So for the people who know me and how I live my life than you will understand how horrible this place was for me to get this upset. To all my friends...Boycott The Delta Cafe! more

The service is ALWAYS lacking 3/17/2011

We have been to Delta several times and the food is alright most the time (but not great). However the other night when we are there it sealed the deal on us NEVER GOING BACK... Long story short: The waiter was rude from the start and seemed to have no patients with us, and then at one point YELLED AT OUR KIDS FROM ACROSS THE RESTAURANT (we have three boys 14, 10, and 7 month old) which resulted in us leaving before getting our food. The waiter was confrontational upon our leaving. When we asked to talk to the manager there was no one ""in charge"" on site or available to talk to... Enough Said more

disappointed 12/14/2010

I was waiting and waiting to get in to this joint. Finally got there Saturday 12/11/10. Cute friendly waitress and customers sitting next to me were helpful. Ordered pancake combo. Pancake was very over cooked. Bacon was very over cooked and the cottage fries (potatoes cooked in the fryer) were luke warm at best. The over medium eggs were perfect. more

RUDE 9/20/2010

The waiter was very rude and short with us. The music was very loud, good music but way to loud for dinner conversation. Food was fair and they do give you a good size plate full. Even if the food was over the top great I would not go back to a place that has rude waiters. more

Food good music tooooo loud 6/22/2010

My wife likes the food, but the music prevents conversation. Why do you have the music too loud? I will NOT go back! Pros: Food good Cons: Music toooo loud! more

So-so 5/16/2010

After many, many, suggestions to go to Delta Cafe, my boyfriend and I decided to stop by. We live right up the street, anyway. It wasn't horrible, so I'm not out to give some nasty review. I just didn't care for the food. I got pulled pork over texas toast with mac n cheese and tater tot casserole for the sides. The sides were good, but the pulled pork wasn't. It was really sloppy (you're probably thinking duh, pulled pork is sloppy) but what I mean is just sloppy and all over the place. Whoever put the plate together didn't care enough to make it on the plate. The pulled pork tasted dirty and fishy, which is understandable considering it's cooked on the same grill that catfish is cooked on. The food just isn't something I prefer - I'm not down with the greasy soul food. As a disclaimer, I am hardly a ""fuddy duddy"" but I just don't prefer loud music while I eat, and I especially don't like dim lighting while I eat - doesn't really offer much room to see what you're eating. Pros: it was slow, so, friendly waiter. Cons: too dark more

Rude, Rude, Rude 5/10/2010

I too, wish I could rate this a 0 or even -10. I have been going to Delta Cafe for many years, but NEVER again. Went for dinner with my mother (81 years old), my sister, my niece and her 1 1/2 year old twin girls. I believe there was only one other table taken when we arrived. The server was very short with us and very rude from the get go. We eat our dinner, we were never checked on, never asked how we were doing. Then the RUDE waiter drops off our tab, I look at it and to my surprise they added a 20% gratuity, for 4 adults! I questioned him about this and he said yes, because of the twins. Then he tells me that he lost customers because of them! How can this be? Their music is SO loud and you're going to tell me that 2 little happy girls made customers leave? There was no one in there to leave! It was just a shock. I will tell everyone I know to never go to Delta Cafe again. It's gone downhill for sure and by reading some of the other comments, I'm not the only one that feels this way. Cons: Service more

Rude, hipster wanna-be bartender 4/24/2010

Make that ZERO stars. If you feel like having your drink served to you by a total, rude, wanna-be, stuck-up hipster who treats you like its a chore to serve you, then this is the place for you! And it wasn't even busy! Hey, I don't need to have someone be 'fake nice' to me when I go out, but I also want a moderate level of respect. This was the third time this bitch treated me like this, so I am fairly certain I didn't catch her in a 'bad moment'. Delta, you have a great concept, but your pretentious staff has made this my last visit. There are way too many great restaurants in this town for this type of treatment. more

Bland Breakfast 4/17/2010

I tried the Delta for breakfast. I loved the laid back environment, the prices weren't too bad, but ultimately the brioche French toast I ordered was only so-so. My husband, who agreed that his biscuits and gravy were bland, insists that their dinner menu is typically tastier. I, however, would only go back for casual drinks with friends. Pros: Cute decor Cons: The food more

Next time I'll stiff him! 4/15/2010

I was recommended this place by a friend and went in with my wife a few Sunday's back for tasty BBQ and a drink! Everything was fine until the waiter brought my tab and then I pulled my card out to pay. The waiter snapped, ""Cash or Check only!"" I found their ATM and believe it or not, it was out of service. My wife and I pulled our cash together and came up with $33. Our bill was $30. Granted, not a great tip! The waiter came by to collect the bill and came back promptly with the $3 and said, ""Really, 10% tip!"" We explained to him that was all the cash we had and the ATM was out of service! My wife and I were stunned! Even as we walked out horrified he was telling his co-worker what a lousy tip we had left...... To say the least, we will never be back! Pros: Mac and Cheese and the Bad Road Cons: Service and they don't take cards more

Loved It! 3/11/2010

We celebrated my son's 30th birthday at The Delta at his request. The drinks were reasonable, generous and creative. Had a hard time deciding what to try but settled on the bbq chicken. It was wonderful! Will definitely go back. There was every type of person from families with young kids to people in their 70s. Heads up, they only accept checks and cash. Pros: Best drinks in town! Cons: Depends on what you expect... I didn't have any cons more

I had better food at Home Town bufet 10/15/2009

I went there last night with my friend, ordered th 5 dollar 40oz pabst. NO problem with that. I ordered the 3 sampler and i got the buisquits and gravy, 2 sides!!! the busquits were awful, they were hard like so hard i could not break them with the fork. when i complained and said that i was leaving and not paying for the food and i did not want a replacement. the waitress got rude and said ""what now we have to trow away 30 $$ worth of food? I replied saying if your food would be worth the 30 bucks she wouldn't have to trow it away!!! she then insisted that we pay for my friends food s""since there wasn't anything wrong"". I refused and will never return to that dump!!! Cons: the food the service and the rude attitude of the staff more

What's happened to Delta? 7/31/2009

Delta was once a bastion for good southern cuisine in Portland. Yeah, it was a seedy place but the food was so good you could overlook the grit and grime of the place. Unfortunately, after having returned to Delta after a year or so sabbatical, I am duly under-impressed. The gumbo, once a regular favorite, now tastes more like something that should be rolled into a tamale than the bowl of Creole love it should be and once was. The greens were always delectable and spicy, now they are bland and boring. And what ever happened to all the great side dishes like stewed tomatoes with okra, BBQ beans, and the ethereal cauliflower casserole? They've pared the sides down to crowd pleasers for toddlers. With bland bad food, Latino music blaring (where's the Cajun beats?), and a plethora of flies landing on everything, Delta is now a major disappointment - bad food and seedy, not a good combo! But, hey, you won't have to wait for a table, even on the weekend! I put my money on My Brother's Crawfish - those guys know how to rock-n-roll Creole cuisine. Pros: No wait for table Cons: Quality has dropped off more

You either love it or hate it 4/30/2009

I can't help but notice from the reviews that people either love this place or hate it. It's the attitude. Be prepared for it - be prepared to wait for your order and just enjoy being with your friends/date. The collard greens kick butt, the ribs are delish and the chicken fried steak... well, if it wasn't so fattening, I could live on it. The drinks are the best in town. I live WAY out on the west side and try to make it to the Delta at least 4 times a year. It isn't the cleanest place - but it has it's own charm. Pros: Man, those drinks! Yum. Never disappointed in the food Cons: slow, slow service. more

Love it...Love it...Love it ~Authentic Portland at its BEST 3/6/2009

Oh the Delta Cafe let me count the ways I love you. Maybe its the gigantic portions of goodness. Or the house infused drinks that are bigger and cheaper than any other place in Portland.. Perhaps its the well loved atmostphere, totally creative, some what like a voo doo lounge done Portland style. Yes it has off days but what restaurant doesn't....i Go here if your looking for a dining experience like no other, big plates of food - try the fried chicken with the tater tot casserole- OMG... and wash it down with a Bloody that comes with a salad on top.. Pros: Authentic Portland Vibe more

If your a drunk then you'll love this place. 1/28/2009

This place is really not for you if you want good food and good service. If you like to drink then this is the place for you. You will notice that all of the positive reviews of this place mention the drinks and all of the other comments are negative and refer to the food and service. If your drunk then the food and service may seem as great as the fancy drinks. Of course they make the most money from the bar so to hell with the food. I am very disappointed as I remember the old Delta Cafe as a great place to eat. (never really very good service though). My main disappointment is with the owner who flat out does not care about mine or others experiences of poor service and bad food. It comes down to money. DON'T GO TO DELTA CAFE Pros: Far from my home. Cons: Bench seats in lounge very dangerous more

**HANDS DOWN MOST AWFUL DINING EXPERIENCE IN PORTLAND, OR** 1/22/2009

**THIS RESTAURANT IS AWFUL** My friend and I went into the Delta Cafe with thoughts of flavorful, spicy creole' food. What we received was quite the opposite. My friend ordered the ""special"" which was chicken and dumplings. The server dropped the spoon into the soup and didn't even bother to remove it.. but told my friend to ""fish"" it out. We tried the soup.. The broth was awful. There was no flavor at all and the vegetables didn't even have a taste. It's as if all flavor was cooked out of the soup and dumplings. I got the ""Better than your Mama's Chicken"" and I have to say, my moms chicken would trump this dish. In fact, I don't fry chicken often and I know for a fact I could do it better than that. I chose red beans and rice and mac & cheese. The only good thing on my plate was the mac and cheese. It is the ONLY thing I ate. When the waitress came to take our plates, she noticed that we barely touched our food and asked if we needed to-go boxes.. we stated no and that we were not impressed with the food. Her response was.. ""oh ok"".. then she walked away only to return with our bill and no apology. Then, a male waiter comes to our table to ask why we were complaining and wanted us to write the complaint down rather than just correcting the problem. The food and the service are terrible at this restaurant and I wouldn't recommend it.. that is unless you want bland food and poor service.. then this is your place. Pros: The lighting is awful, so you won't get to see the food before you eat it. Cons: Other good businesses are closing down while this one stays open. more
