A good time was had by all! 9/6/2011

The mystery weekend was a birthday gift for my husband – I had no idea how much we would both love it. The whole experience was so much fun, everyone was in costume and we all played roles. We had intrigue and shenanigans aplenty to keep everyone involved and entertained. The Innkeepers/owners and staff were friendly, attentive, involved and made each and everyone in the group feel like old friends. The food was wonderful – Kudos to the chef, she is amazing! The room (FRIO) was large, clean and even with record temperatures (108!) it was very comfortable and cool. This room had its own window unit, in addition to the central air conditioning so the noise from the street and neighboring bar were blocked out by the AC’s “white noise”. We slept like babies. The grounds were inviting with little sitting areas scattered about for chatting with new friends or alone time if you want. We will definitely be going back! more

A charming experience 8/18/2011

My wife and I wanted a little getaway from the Dallas Metroplex and chose the Crystal River Inn from viewing their website. As a result of our experience I write this review, listing the pros and cons as honestly as I know: Cons: - The room we originally stayed in (San Marco) was hot. Pros: -All the folks we interfaced with were very nice. -The first night we stayed in a room that was too hot for us. The next day we told the staff, and they quickly moved us into another room (Medina). They were very accommodating and apologetic regarding the air conditioning issue with the first room. The second room was very, very comfortable. -Both rooms we stayed in were charming - It brought back lots of fond memories for one raised in the ""Old South"". -The breakfast for each morning was both different and delicious - We had ""Carrot Cake"" pancakes one morning and a wonderful spinach quiche on another morning. The cook / baker is very gifted! - I met one of the owners one evening, though he didn't introduce himself as an owner. He was very personable and was heavily involved with a hands-on upgrade project in one of the rooms. I sensed a good deal of TLC from this encounter regarding the owner's relationship with the property. Overall, I would strongly recommend this B & B to anyone wanting to visit the area, or just to have some private time to themselves away from home. My caveatt is that this is a legitimate, historical property, and along with the antiquity and charm comes authenticity that is sometimes apparent through the inevitable mishaps that are associated with age - If one understands this going in, and realizes that the staff are very reactive to any unforeseen mishap when it is brought to their attention, then one can thoroughly enjoy the experience without the burden of unrealistic expectations that are often fostered in our plastic, modern culture. more

An expensive let down! Frown ... ! 7/1/2011

What a complete disappointment! If I could give this NO Stars, I would! This was meant to be a special mother-daughter get-away. For years I’ve been raving about different bed and breakfast stops that my husband and I have stayed in and enjoyed so much we’ve become return guests. Let me tell you, that I will NOT be a return guest here. We never met the owner, which seemed odd. Every B&B we’ve ever stayed in we’ve been welcomed kindly by the owner and told about the town and the history off the inn. Not here. We were just asked to sign in...that is it; I’ve had a friendlier welcome at a low budget hotel. When entering (FRIO) we clicked on the light and the fan, dust flew off of the fan blades and got us both sneezing! The mirrors all around the room were smudged and dirty! A B&B being old is quaint and part of the charm. But dirty and unclean there is no charm in that! The white on the bedspread and canopy looked a grayish tint from years of dust? We pulled back the bed and were shocked to see the wrinkled pillow cases and sheets, it seemed like someone had slept there the night before and just pulled the comforter back up, or that the sheets were pulled out of the dryer in a wad. The wicker bedroom furniture cushions were very dirty. There was no way I wanted to even step foot in that tub! With the black mold around it, and the dingy rubber mat! The toilet was temperamental and would not flush twice! The room was SO hot we were sweating! With no way to control the temperature from our room we were uncomfortably hot all night long! We were surprised to read on one of the laminated sheets in the bedroom to "not put up with the parting neighbors any time past 11pm to call the police or the staff". Sure enough soon after 9pm we heard the party getting started who knows what time that racket ended. The street noise from that front bedroom is horrible! You’re constantly hearing cars, and loud motorbikes! And the train! Oh, the train whistles that really added to the “peaceful rest” that neither one of us could see coming! In our room you could hear every word said in the hallway and the kitchen! I guess the kitchen is employee hang out area, because we heard talking and clanging for hours! The bedroom door has a window opening that lets in the hallway light, that shines in your face while your sitting in bed in what you’d hope would be a nice quite dark room. We finally got to sleep right about the time it was time to wake up and walk to breakfast. No coffee pot in our room, No hairdryer. Only one shampoo packet, and a used bottle of lotion and Mr. Bubble! One pack of cranberry snacks. And an open tampon packet in the bathroom basket. Iron but no ironing board. Parking hard to get in and out of if more than 3 cars are there! We walk into the dinning room and hear a lady on the phone; we are left sitting there for a good while, until a shy teenage looking girl asks if we would like coffee. Our entire stay we were never spoken to by an adult who worked there! Not once! Our breakfast was a cold keish, which gave us both upset stomachs soon after we ate it! After our one night experience we’d both had enough and left the room neatly and decided that another night would be more than we could take! I am just so disappointed! The pictures and website were so welcoming! But that is a completely different story with the people who work here and the lack of care put into the room we stayed in! It is pretty sad when the staff AND room cleanliness and quality at the Baymont Inn tops that of The Crystal River Inn! I’d be embarrassed of the cleanliness and friendliness of this B&B, if I was the owner! From small details to the droopy flowers in the room, to big ones like the lack of cleanliness and making your guest feel welcome. more

Relaxing stay 4/11/2004

We stayed in the Sabinal room in the Young House, across the street from the Main House. The room decor was pretty, although the bedding seemed old. It was very homey and relaxing. The claw-footed tub was a nice touch. The only drawback to the nights was that facing a fairly busy street, the room was sometimes loud with car noises. Breakfast was absolutely scrumptious, with friendly service. This is a great getaway, close to the outlet mall and river activities. Just beware it's on a busy street, not in the country. Pros: Service, Breakfast more
