I ate there once and spent the next 24 hours vomiting. Coincidence? I have no desire to find out. Good luck more

Big disappointment 3/23/2010

Our visit was spoiled by waiting for an hour and a half after ordering for our guest's meal to be delivered. Finally flagged the waiter who seemed to have forgotten about it. My companion and I had finished eating our meals long before the waiter returned. He brought only one item saying that they were out of the scallops in the other dish that had been ordered. This was an hour and a half after the order had been placed! My friend went home hungry with no food other than the salad. They were also out of two of the wines we requested. We were brought a substitute choice by one waiter who ended up serving others and our new waiter came to the table and said there wasn't enough in the bottle the first person had brought to serve us all so we had to make another choice. Very poor service. They just didn't seem to care about us as customers. All in all it was a big disappointment and spoiled the evening out for dinner. Pros: delicious salads Cons: service was terrible more

Good food, icy 'tude 10/23/2009

Food is good nouvelle, for the price it should be. Stetson salad was inventive and tasty. As for the service, I was reminded of an episode of ""Frasier"" or L'idiot from ""LA Story."" I'll forget the salad but will remember the pretentious attitude, rich in every gesture and grimace, reminding you what a favor you're being done. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. We tried to have a sense of humor but the good food hard to swallow. Better service, cuisine, and overall experience elsewhere. Pros: Stetson Salad Cons: Service more

THE STETSON SALAD RULES! 11/21/2007

Every time I'm in Phoenix, i have to visit Cowboy Ciao. I've been coming here for the past 6 years and I've never been disappointed. By far, my favorite thing is the Stetson salad. Not only do i love the way it tastes, but the way it's presented is fabulous. All the ingredients are neatly placed in a row on the salad plate -- smoked salmon, chopped arugula, roasted sweet corn, pepitas and cous cous -- and then the server gingerly mixes in the creamy pesto dressing and serves it to you. ABSOLUTELY YUMMY!! It's such a cute ritual. I love the creative food combinations (peanut brittle & bacon, for instance) and the cocktail options and wine flights are fantastic. During lunch the scene is very casual but once dinnertime rolls around, the lights turn down & the noise goes up. Admittedly the last few times my usual dessert -- the poto' chocolate (thick chocolate at the bottom of a cappuccino cup topped w/cream infused w/chili powder) -- has been a letdown. Even so, I highly recommend this place - -it's consistently outstanding. Pros: The food, the drinks Cons: They don't have a location in L.A.!! more

Still going strong in downtown Scottsdale 11/12/2007

Even after all these years Cowboy Ciao still rocks. I was surprised when my wife and I walked in at 5:45pm on a Friday and we were told we needed a reservation. Fortunately, the bar offers a full meal menu and thats where we parked ourselves. We split the corn meal tiger shrimp appetizer served on a bed of creamy cheesy grits. Very nice dish, shrimp flavor was awesome and it carried well will the breading and grits. After that we ordered the chop and testosterone salads. Great combinations and flavors in both salads, with the chop salad including granola as one of its primary ingredients and cherries in the testosterone salad. It was a very hard call but I would have to say the chop salad was the better of the two, simply because of the unusual ingredients, blending into an awesome salad. more

LOVE IT 6/13/2007

you people are crazy Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Stuffed Olives 4/2/2007

It is an interesting concept and the service/friendliness of the staff was great. However, the food is ridiculously overpriced even more so because it is not that unique. They were unwilling to change any dish to accomodate a vegetarian in our group because the chef ""did not want to alter the integrity of his dishes."" The dishes are not good to begin with! However, the reason I will never go back is because when I ordered a martini and asked for a third olive, they charged us for the third olive. I have been to enough restaurants in several states and that has NEVER happened! more

Another Disappointment 1/1/2007

We keep giving this place a chance each year, and each time it disappoints. First, the food is not exceptional, and it is overpriced as many of the reviewers mention. The mark-up on wine is 4x. We had a grumpy server - asked for clean silverware and things went downhill from there. On atmosphere, the interior decor is dated and does nothing to enhance one's dining experience. In fact, I have never liked the insides of this restaurant. In sum, Cowboy Ciao is at best, a h i t or miss. So far we haven't h i t. more

Extensive wine list 10/14/2006

We had a party of 12 there for ""business"" and all in all, most people were satisfied. The mushrooms and bruchette as an appitizer were pretty tasty. I had the Elk for dinner which the waiter reccomended. It was OK. The lady next to me had the veal chop and said it was very dry. The chopped salad was unreal. I would go back just for that. The wine list was huge and the staff was helpful in choosing a couple of different options. Pros: huge wine list, great salad Cons: price more

poor choice 8/24/2006

Took my wife for her birthday requested a candle for her cake never got it. Seats too high, and uncomfortable, no bread served with meal water is served straight from the tap. Very expensive. Food was mediocre at best servings very small more

DO NOT EAT HERE YOU WILL REGRET IT! 5/26/2006

The food was terrible, everything was overpriced. Even if the food was prepared right it still would be horrible. The 10once bottle of soda were 2 dollars each. If you wanted the bread it cost 5 dollars. I do not reccomended it to anybody. Everything about this place was so bad. We never have written a review that's how bad it was! more

get over the name.. go, go GO NOW! 3/21/2006

This is one of the finest dining experiences EVER. The service was professional, attentive and knew what they were doing. Trust your waiter to put together an outstanding dinner for you and your guests. I have eaten on 5 continents, over more than 30 years of travel and this was in the top 3 or 4 EVER, anywhere. can't wait to get back to scottsdale again Pros: Food, service, wine list Cons: location, name, had to work to get th more

Overrated 1/13/2006

Find it funny that Nikki Buchanan keeps recommending this place. Is she really a good food critic? The food is nothing but mediocore (and Ive given this place more than one chance). The wine list is purposefully confusing and ridiculously expensive. The wait staff is ready to upsell everything from a piece of bread. I would never recommend this tourist trap! Pros: nothing Cons: expense, confusing wine list, obnoxious sales more

Cow-bore Ciao 11/3/2003

There was nothing inviting about this restaurant. The decor is dark but not romantic. The music did not compliment the Italian/Cowboy theme. Worst of all, the food was marginal at best. Two soups, one appetizer, and one meal were not served hot. The flavor of everything was bland, and nothing was memorable. We expected much more, based on reviews we'd read, but then maybe we should have been suspicious of a restaurant that prints its reviews right in their menu. Like everything else about this restaurant, it just seemed like it was trying too hard and not succeeding. more

Not worth it 4/6/2003

Despite it's good rating, our group of 4 found it a poor experience. The service was horrible, a 3+ hour dinner. It took over 45 minutes from the time we were done with the appetizer and the plates taken until the entree was served. No explanation. The food itself ranged from very good to bad, depending on the entree. It is rated as $21 to 30 for a 3 course meal. That is impossible. For 4 people it was $210 before tip. That was 4 well drinks, 2 shared appetizers, 2 shared desserts, 4 mid-priced entrees and a $22 bottle of wine. We would not go back. Finally, the wine list is so extensive and so full of words that it is literally impossible to review it and select a wine. All it is is a list that says ""Look at me, I'm huge"", not something usable. Cons: expensive, poor sevice, very noisy more

Great Place 10/25/2002

THis lace is great, I took my girlfriend here for our 1 yr. anniverasy. The food was wonderfull and the wait staff was excellent. The waitress picked up some of our bill due to the fact that my girlfriend couldn't have any of the desserts, all of them had nuts which she is alergic to. Over all great place to go! more

Good spot 7/8/2002

Great, inventive food. Quality service and pleasant decor. Tasty bread pudding for desert. Will definitely return. more
