it really is an absolute hidden treasure in the midwest. the collection is one of the best and the exhibits are world class. for 2 days of adventure, take time to visit the natural history museum located in the same oval, great fun for the kids! Pros: free, parking more

wow- a free museum-adn a great one at that-you can't beat it!!!!! It's a wonderful, clean and big museum. take at least a full day-if not two to appreciate all that they have to offer. Take a picnic lunch and sit out in the beautiful gardens! Pros: FREE!!, beautiful Cons: not in good area, lock your car, better yet take metro more

World Class Art at an Unbeatable Price! 10/4/2002

What can I say? It's got magnificent displays, wonderful works of Art, and a gorgeous garden (when it's not under reconsrtruction), and best of all it's FREE! It's a great place to bring kids and adults alike (try the armor room or the modern art section with the kids, they'll love it). A free art museum is a rare commodity, especially one that's as high quality as the Cleveland Museum of Art, so make sure you go often! Pros: It's Free!, Excellent Collection, Beautiful Gardens more

art, art, more art 8/14/2002

A museum for all people 8/9/2002

I have been art museums all over the US, and this is without a doubt my favorite. Classical, contemporary, paintings, sculptures.... any style you prefer is showcased there. With exhibitions of original artists (even MONET!) changing every month, this museum is sure to surprise even the everyday visitor. I would reccomend this museum to EVERYONE! Pros: Diversity, Free, Quality more

What a Gem - and it's free! 8/2/2002

In a city with many unique and fabulous museums, the Museum of Art must take first place. One of the three best "balanced" art museums in the nation, it also boasts the continent's finest collection of Chinese art, Colonial American pewter (with examples by Paul Revere), significant medieval European tapestry, and European armour. The annual May Show is one of the most prestigious venues for young, emerging talents in the American art scene. One can listen to free organ recitals on the biggest pipe organ in the area in the museum auditorium (which is also home to a performing arts series held during the Fall/Winter concert season featuring renowned musicians from throughout the world). Best of all, it is the only major museum in America that is free to enter! But really now, do contribute at least a few dollars when you visit to help support this cultural treasure. Pros: Location, Parking, Quality more

Surprisingly Good 5/21/2002

I did not expect the mueum to be as great as it was when I visited it. I learned a lot of new things and there were many interesting things to see. It worth it to go. Pros: Its free, Easy Parking, Great Exhibits more

It's all about the armor room 5/15/2002

Clevelanders are always raving about the art museum, and it actually deserves the praise. Admission is free, it's open late several nights a week, and the collection includes some really cool (famous) pieces. But the best, best thing of all is the armor room, which was spruced up just a couple years ago. All of the armor is incredible, but check out the greenish helmet in the first case on the right-hand wall (when you walk in). It's this German-made helmet with a gruesome-looking face on it. It's horrifying, and yet you can't look away. The tapestry across from it is also amazing; you can literally get lost in it. more

  • The Scene
Founded in 1916 "for the benefit of all the people forever," the Cleveland Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections in North America, boasting more than 30,000 works encompassing 5,000 years. Natural lighting streams in to further enhance the great works, from ancient Egyptian pieces to contemporary art. The museum itself is an architectural crown jewel overlooking a Grecian-style courtyard and has been praised by critics worldwide for its originality and creativity. All this, plus concerts, lectures, classes and a great film series.

    The Collection
The museum's medieval gallery provides ample thrills, showcasing arms and armor, brass tombs and artifacts from the age of King Arthur. Or linger in the Italian Renaissance gallery, surrounded by bold oil paintings and murals depicting the holy family and many a martyred saint.
