I've had Clear's 4G internet for 15 days now. Overall I am pleased with the service and has suited most of my needs OK. I've only had one dropped connection within that time. I purchased the Apollo 4G mobile hotspot, which works well. The battery cover on the back is a horrible design and it takes a lot of adjusting to get it on properly. It's also very finicky about 4G signal; the slightest movement can vary signal reception. I have mine near a window and it's consistently at 4 to 3 bars ( out of 5), which seems a bit odd since I'm in the "" Clear best reception"" area near Orlando.
Download speeds are decent. I'm paying 50 dollars a month for the "" fast "" service, however it's not that fast and I feel like I'm getting ripped off. The plan is: 6mb down ( which is pretty slow by today's standards) and 1mb up. Various speed tests usually display my download at 6, 7, 8 even 11mbs. So overall the download is decent and you can stream movies, use torrent file sharing, no problem.
The upload and ping are the reasons this service is a bad choice for gaming. My ping runs anywhere from 120 to 300, which is horrible for gaming as this is the time it takes your computer to communicate to the game's server. Upload speed is another important factor for online gaming and this consistently falls below the "" 1mb"" advertised speed. I've had as low as .3mb, but it's usually around .7 to .8 and every once in a while 1mb.
I also have an issue with the consistency. If you could label one ISP as Bi Polar, this one would be it. The internet speeds don't remain consistent and jump from pretty good, to down right awful. Not only that if you read your terms of service agreement they state that they have the right to throttle your internet speed if there is excessive usage. WTF, is that?
Bottom line, there is better ISP's for the money you spend on Clear, and more importantly more consistent. If you enjoy the mobility and contract-free features of this service and will just be doing regular internet usage and downloads, then this service will work for you; however I don't recomend the "" fast"" service at 50 dollars a month, because it's just not comparable to other internet providers.
Oh and most importantly make sure to check the coverage area maps to ensure you're in an area that will receive good 4G tower signal.
