Great art house fare 4/16/2006

This is a very popular theatre on Charles (hence the name, natch). They specialize in independent films and films that don't get a wide release. It's really not in competition with the multiplexes. Great old theatre building with lots of character. Prices are about the same as you would pay elsewhere. Make a night of it and get some tapas at Tapas Teatro! more

excellent indie movie theater! 12/19/2005

The Charles theater is the place to go to see small release, independent movies. Lots of documentaries, foreign films, and other movies that you can't find other places. Tickets prices are comparable to chain theaters, but your money is supporting a local Baltimore business, which is a good thing. They have the regular snacks, and they don't skimp on the free cups for water. more

Great Little Art House Theater 8/17/2005

The Charles is a great venue for seeing indie films or other films which, for one reason or another, are not widely distributed. Located in northern Baltimore near Penn Station, the nearby restaurants make it great for a night out. The theater itself has a very cozy atmosphere, reasonable prices on concessions, and walls covered in classic movie posters. One thing to remember is they only accept cash, so leave your American Express at home. more

A great place to catch rare movies 8/16/2005

The Charles is a wonderful little theater that tends to play independent movies and other films that are not in wide release. So anytime you hear buzz about an indy film or something, this is the place to catch it. The Charles also has started to play wide release films (some would say they sold out), but I prefer it for the smaller films. The ambience is great, and it just feels authentic. more

Beyond Hollywood--Art flicks 8/16/2005

The Charles is Baltimore City's Art theatre. It doesn't usually play the action packed Hollywood crap that we are flooded with on a daily basis. The movies they play are more international and usually require a few more brain cells to enjoy. The Charles has improved its facilities over the past 5 years. Exposed brick, leather lounge chairs and of course, the typical over priced popcorn. However, if you get their early, they have a nice restaurant attached to the theatre...i forget the name of it. Its a nice experience...i tend to go to the daily movies for they are cheaper and its not as crowded with the suburbanites. more

Smells funny, but the best place for indie movies 8/15/2005

I went to the Charles to see Hustle and Flow as well as March of the Penguins. Admittedly, their bathrooms are kind of smelly and not as clean as I would like, but c'mon, they're bathrooms, right? Anyway, it's a very quaint theatre. It has lots of movies playing, and they are usually very good independent movies. Before any of the big movie theatres had March of the Penguins, the Charles had it. It is also attached to a restaurant. Very nice if you are going on a dinner-and-a-movie date. It's a great theatre, who cares about the smell, you get used to it anyway, so I highly recommend it. more
