Naper Settlement, something to see 8/5/2005

Naper Settlement has so much to offer, it's hard to know where to begin. There is a whole refurbished town including blacksmith, press etc. It has a quaint little church which stills served the public. There is a waiting list for people wanting to get married there. There is a huge old mansion that is quite impressive. There hold craft shows, civil war days and much more. Always something to see and do. PROS: a day well spent CONS: parking can be a problem. more

Love this chapel for Weddings 7/27/2005

If I could post photos I would-- this is a beautiful little chapel on Naper Settlement- perfect for weddings and reasonably priced. We paid $400 6 years ago. Beautiful stained glass windows, nice scenery outside. It was a methodist church in the 1800s. You can also find interesting things (chapel themed) in the gift shop on site as well. For example, I bought a print of the chapel from when it was a church a long time ago. PROS: Love it! CONS: more

Editorial
  • In Short
There are five private homes within the Naper Settlement (not all are open for viewing) including an 1830s pioneer home and a farm laborer's cottage. Public buildings include the fort, stonecarver's shop, one-room school, post office, firehouse, print shop and blacksmith shop with several public areas to tour. The Pre-Emption House was the first hotel and tavern west of Chicago and now houses the Naper Settlement Visitors Center. The 1864 Century Memorial Chapel can now be rented for weddings and special events.
