My first experience at this place was fabulous ... My girlfriends and I had drinks and snacks and an overall great time on a Sunday night ... We told the owner, a cute blonde women, that we couldn't wait to come back the next Saturday with our spouses ... She didn't mention that we should make reservations or that she'd really rather we not bother, so we showed up ... All ten of us! Before we could order any food she informed us that there was a 45 minute wait for dinner ... Really? I guess the waiter who sat four of us at an empty table didn't know about the wait. And hard to imagine why there was any wait at all given the other three empty tables. When two more of our group showed up, the lady sitting alone at the table behind us offered up her empty chairs. The owner countered with ""As soon as this patron is finished with her meal, your friends have to leave."" After all there was the phantom 45 minute wait list. Her tone and body language suggested she wanted us to leave ... I tried to plead our case to a waiter, explaining we didn't know there was a wait list since the other waiter simple led us to a table. Before I could suggest our party be placed on the ""wait list"", the waiter replied loudly (enough to my cheeks turned red) ""I'm not the right bald guy and I'm too busy to talk to you!"" No problem - we left and walked into the Mexican restaurant (El Mariachi Loco III) next door where we were welcomed with smiling faces, great food and good service. The rest of our party showed up just as we were leaving and managed to keep our coveted table, where they proceeded to eat and drink until the place cleared out . . . At no time, did a wave of people show up to have their names marked off the ""wait list"" and when my friends left the place was close to empty. Since this establishment isn't on the cheap side, you can imagine how much revenue this owner lost due to making us feel unwelcome . . . \r \r I won't be back next year . . . or ever!!! more

On a weekend trip to the coast, we longed for some warm, yummy soup to go. I had read the FABULOUS reviews elsewhere and was excited to try Castaways. This is a very small restaurant, and appears family/friend run. Although it was cold and blustery last night, there were many brave souls out in CB hoping to be seated for an excellent meal here. I suspect we all got what we wanted! I know take out is an issue for small, busy restaurants, and I was so pleased that I was able to order the sumptuous seafood soup from the friendly gal handling the bar. People were waiting for tables, the small staff was clealy busy, so I appreciated their welcoming attitude towards my simple order. The soup (chowder?) was divine. It had just the right amount of spices, was chock full of whitefish and shrimp in a broth that was topped with just a hint of cream. It was the perfect meal for a cold and rainy night. Had I ordered a side of bread, it would have been even better. I did take a peek at the creative menu, which is best described as fusion cuisine. Carribean, Mediterranean...some Asian dishes like ahi. All in all, the menu is quite fun, with a little bit of funk as well. I seriously cannot wait to go back when we can have a sit down meal which I promise will include one of the beautiful adult beverages I watched being created, a glass of wine off of their nice wine list, some appetizers/tapas, and a sure to be delicious entree. And, don't forget the seafood soup! I am sorry that a pervious reviewer from September had a bad evening. Sometimes you just have a bad experience for a variety of reasons. Please do not be put off by this.... I found the staff to be quite nice, and they all tried very hard. Give a small business owner in Oregon a break! If you want a fun menu with creative food and are willing to pay a fair price for the experience, give Castaways a try. I can't wait to be back in CB, hopefully in the very near future so I can enjoy this sweet little restaurant to the fullest. more

So the first meal I ate there with my wife and son was the best I had eaten in Cannon Beach. It was so good we returned the next night and on the second pass the food was just ok. The chief walked out into the dinning room and complained loudly that my wife would order her steak well done. He said: ""I will not cook that meat to well. I just will not do it."" I was amused by the outburst. There were also several people sitting at the bar talking in loud voices using profanity liberally. I complained to the waitress who understood my concerns given my 6 year old. Unfortunately, she seemed unable to address the issue. I guess these 'ladies' at the bar were examples of some of the local women. I noted that they were wearing Cannon Beach Fire tee shirts - not the image you want for the local fire dept. All in all a mixed bag. more
