Utter Disapointment 2/10/2006

iserable experience. We made reservations a month in advanceparty of ten for a special birthday. Canlis overbooked and kept us waiting for 2 solid hours. Granted, they did offer free appetizers and drinks, but it completely spoiled our other plans for the evening. Further, once we were seated the service was horribly slow and the food was just mediocre (compared to The Met or Mortons). more

disappointing...... 2/7/2006

I was interested to eat in Canlis because of the reviews that I read in this site. I was very looking forward to eat the Wagyu tenderloin, however the taste is not like the kobe-beef I had before. I did some research & I found that Wagyu beef is supposed to be a kobe-beef but the fact is it isn't what I'm expecting, the tenderness is comparable to others meat, it's not superior where it should be. However the service is pretty good, I reserved the cache room it was not that spectacular, I would prefer the main dining room. The crab cake was good though, and so are escargots and Peter Canlis' prawns. I'd recommend Canlis salad. The Souffle was pretty good too. The muscovy duck is better than the Wagyu tenderloin. Pros: service, ambience Cons: steak not worth it more

Fantastic! 1/21/2006

We chose to celebrate our anniversary here and didn't regret it! The view was amazing as was the beauty of the restaurant itself. The service was excellent and didn't miss a beat within the whole two hours. Since it is extremely expensive, I heard the food wasn't worth ""that"" much, but we had the steak and lamb and it was so good! Our server even brought us dessert for the anniversary when we didn't order any and that was very generous and good as well. All in all, it was the perfect night for our anniversary. It is very pricey, but everything went great. Pros: ambiance, service, food Cons: pricey, only valet more

A Memorable Night 12/16/2005

My husband and I love Canalis for special occassions. The food is fantastic! All of their seafood dishes are wonderful. The chocolate lava cake is to die for. The drinks and wine are expensive, but they do have a good selection. The main dining room is romantic, but the private dining room ""the cashe"" is the ultimate in romance. My husband actually proposed to me there. Pros: Food, Ambience more

WOW 11/25/2005

Took my girl there after the prom - 44 years ago. It was the most memorable dining experience of my life. I can hardly wait to get back; I had supposed it was long gone. Just goes to show that quality lasts! ""Odd Hwy 99 access""? When I was there, 99 was the main drag, and Canlis was right there with easy access. You dont move a legend to accommodate the DOT. Pros: Fantastic ambiance, Beautiful view Cons: None - You get, what you pay for! more

Don't listen to the naysayers 10/22/2005

I have noticed whenever there is a truly fine business there will be some bogus negative reviews (assumably from competitors). I have eaten at the best restaurants in Boston, NY, Chicago, SF and Seattle. Here was my experience w/ Canlis - FANTASTIC in every way. They have made an art form of service and the food does not disappoint either for the price. If you need to impress someone - someone that has money and knows class - this is a sure bet. Just go to Canlis Pros: Service, Atmoshpere, Food Cons: $$$$ - PRICEY more

Perfect 8/18/2005

This is one of the best all around restaurants I have had the pleasure to visit. If only I had not been there alone in the city. What a place to wow my girlfriend. I am plotting a way to take her along next time even if it costs a fortune for the airfare and hotel. Pros: everything, Old World Service, perfect Cons: Not in my town more

Canlis My Favorite 6/25/2005

I first visited Canlis when I was just 23year old.......that was a while ago, and though some things have changed at my favorite restaurant, it is still the most romantic and delicious restaurant in the Seattle area. Pros: atmosphere Cons: the beautiful Japanes, e waitresses are, gone more

Great Overall 5/18/2005

Although I have only been to Canlis once (at the pirvate room Cache), I think it is among one of the best restaurants in the Seattle area. The food is great, although for the price I'm sure there are many restaurants that may offer food just as good if not better. However, the ambience and the service is terrific. The waitress was very attentive and the view was wonderful. Not a wine expert myself, Canlis seems to have a very extensive wine list. If you are looking for a private dining experience with that special someone, give Canlis a try and you will not be disappointed! Pros: service, food, view Cons: can be pricy more

A night to remember 10/8/2004

Canlis may be pricey, but you get what you pay for. The ambience is incredible, the service top-notch, the food very good. The wine list is extensive and they have a bottle for any budget. This is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, but even if you're just going there for the heck of it and/or aren't spending the big bucks, the owner and his gifted staff of servers will make you feel like a million dollars. Pros: Unsurpassed service, Great food, Magical ambience more

Unforgettable dining 6/11/2004

OK - I may be a little biased here since this is where my fiance proposed to me but he did wait till the end of the dinner, and it would have still been one of the most unforgettable dining experiences in the area regardless. If you want a fancy, romantic dinner with great views this is definitely the place to go. They have the best and largest wine list I've seen in the area. The sommelier is a real pro. and can help select the best bottle based on your tastes. And the food... to die for. The staff here work hard to ensure that you are really having a great dining experience. I can't recommend this place enough. Go, go, go... Pros: EVERYTHING more

wonderful 12/25/2003

We celebrated our anniversary at Canlis and had a wonderful experience. The food was fantastic (perfect martinis!) - the wine list is the most expensive I've seen, but very good. We ended up bringing our own bottle. Try the house salad and the crab cakes - both are excellent. It was a little bright where we sat, but overall the decor is beautiful and the service exceptional. Pros: food, service, atmosphere more

Top 5 in my book 11/9/2003

Just right! The service is fantastic (definitely a ""10""). Parris, thank you for a wonderful service. Canlis prepared the best Beef tenderloin ever. Buttery and flavorfull. The wine selection is excellent. Residing in the SF Bay Area, our expectation is high in terms of food and Wine. Canlis provided that and more. Charles Nob Hill French Laundry and Daniel, NYC although in a different league, does not compare. Outstanding food without the pretence. Save your $$$ and do dine at Canlis. Pros: Service, Food, Atmosphere Cons: Hard to find more

Best of Seattle 8/1/2003

Everyone is a food critic...my friends and I love going out to eat at restaurants we can never afford. School formal events always give us that excuse to spend money like it's candy money. We must say that Canlis is our favorite special event spot in Seattle. You basically pay for the view and atmosphere...but the food doesn't dissapoint! Pros: Atmosphere, View more

MUST BE CRAZY! 7/17/2003

I have dined at Canlis 13 of the 15 times my business has brought me to Seattle in the last 6 months. Every time I enjoy watching the blatant displays of self-importance and projected airs onto this staff who so obviously do uphold the idea that you are being welcomed into their ""home."" I would (like the rest of the country) place Canlis among the likes of Charlie Trotter's, Fr. Laundry, 5th Floor; Canlis is out of Seattle's league. We found the food comforting and were happy with the Northwest staples skillfully prepared. I was upset that night to find an older patron yelling at the young Asian server as if she were deaf assuming she could not understand when she spoke perfect English. Canlis fills its delicate role perfectly, keeping one foot in the grave by giving deference to its aging regulars while reinventing itself for the next generation! Pros: SERVICE!, views, wine, cocktail, owners on site Cons: large groups on floor, small bar area more

It's nice, but not complete 6/13/2003

I enjoyed the ambiance, the nice, if not difficult to understand waitperson, and the fantastic view. However, for the price I didn't think the food was that great. Good, sure, but not worth what they charge. When I plan to spend that much on dinner again I'll go to a place that's only about the food. Pros: great wine list, great view, good piano Cons: overpriced, because, they can be more

Not worth the hype! 3/14/2003

Food was average, not any better than any other fie restaurant in town. The only plus that Canlis offers is their spectacular view, but only parties of 4 or more are seated at window/view tables so don't plan to have a romantic view for two! Pros: View, Decor Cons: Seating Layout, Overpriced more

server flaws 3/4/2003

New staff should be prepared better. At least I guess she was new. Our waitress forgot crucial items that needed to accompany our food at the SAME time. When reminded, she appeared to be genuinely surprised, and it took 5 mins or more to get these accompanying dishes. Also completely forgot our appetizer order, though we did not remind her as our salad order had already come, and they were very generous. The food was excellent, though it really was ruined by the silly service. more

Romantic 12/12/2002

Fantastic views, excellent service, great food. Food pricey but WORTH IT! You'll go back on those special occasions! Pros: Outstanding food, Excellent service, free parking Cons: somewhat pricey more

Refined Seattle Dining, Best View in Tow 11/15/2002

Our girls night out Seattle dinner club had dinner here this week. The view of the entire Seattle valley knocked my socks off the minute I walked in the door. This is THE place to take someone to wow them with the amazing view, refined ambience, and yes, excellent food and service. Space Needle probably has the only better view in the area, but their food is not great, and it's drastically overpriced. Food was excellent as I mention above, but I've had better at El Gaucho etc. So, it's the combo of everything that makes this a great place. Pros: View, Service, Food Cons: Odd Hwy 99 access more
