Plan to be here all day. I'm not kidding. This place has layers upon layers of science and technology to learn about and play with. Bring a lunch or eat at the cafe. It's decent food. A must see when in SFO. more

CA Academy of Sciences opens at 9:30a.m. and we arrived a little after 10 without any lines. We went straight to the planetarium to get out passes for the 12p.m. show and began our journey. It's important to get your passes ASAP because the shows fill up quick! more

Great Family Experience 12/12/2008

A great place to take the family. My kids loved all the exhibits from the Rain Forest to the Ocean. It was a little crowded when we went but that's expected for a Saturday. If you want a good out of town experience with the family then the California Academy of Sciences is a great place to go. Pros: Awesome experience with the family Cons: A little crowded more

Aquarium, Planetarium, Museum...All Under One Roof in San Francisco

Owner Message
  • The California Academy of Sciences is the only place in the world to combine a natural history museum, aquarium, planetarium, rainforest and world-class research and education facility under one roof.  All housed in the world's largest public green building designed by award winning architect Renzo Piano. Topped with a living roof, a 2.5 acre expanse of native California plants, providing a habitat for birds, butterflies and insects, it blends seamlessly into the beautiful landscape of San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Park.

Come nose-to-beak with penguins and parrots, watch sharks and sting rays cruise beneath your feet, and feel the spray of the California coast. Fly to Mars (and beyond the Milky Way!) from the safety of your planetarium seat, take a virtual safari in African Hall, or climb into the canopy of a living rainforest. Face your fears- and an albino alligator- inside the Swamp, and meet scientists as they return from research expeditions around the world. From the depths of a Philippine coral reef to the outer reaches of the Universe, it's all inside the California Academy of Sciences.

Daily interactions with animals, educators, and biologists within immersive, hands-on exhibits offer discovery and wonder for guests of all ages. The Academy will inspire lifelong curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.

    On view now:

EARTHQUAKE: A new exhibit and planetarium show
Prepare to be moved!  Experience a high-magnitude jolt in our earthquake simulator, fly over and into our dynamic planet in an immersive planetarium show, and explore the impacts of the largest disaster in San Francisco's history- the 1906 earthquake and fire.  Along the way, you'll see how earthquakes fit into the larger story of plate tectonics, a constant process that builds mountains, moves continents, and creates the landscape in which life evolves.

    ANIMAL ATTRACTION
Discover the surprising secrets of animal meeting, mating and repopulating in a revealing new exhibit of live animals.

Visit the website for more information on special exhibits and daily programs.
