Cold Atmosphere, Cold Service, Cold Food 5/8/2009

We live less than a mile from Cafe de Thai and had seen their unique and colorful building many times. On a friday night, we decided to venture over and try their food. Expecting to find any restaurant busy on a Friday night at 7 oclock, we walked into a dining room that only had two tables seated and a patio with only 4 tables seated. This should have been our first clue about the experience we were about to have. The restaurant looks and feels like an IKEA. My husband commented that the cold concrete floors reminded him of the hallways in communist apartment buildings. The waterfall makes the restaurant have a very chlorine like smell, not appetizing. The plates and glasses were cool and high quality. Upon entering we decided to sit on the patio because thats were everyone else was sitting and it always feels awkward being seated in the middle of a practically empty dining room. However, the patio was too cold, so we moved inside. The waitress had a five minute speech to do to introduce you to the specials of the day. Our waitress did her introduction in such a way that I felt like she was the high school teacher from Ferris Buellers Day Off....Bueller? Bueller? (Don't know the reference?...lets just say...she was uninspiring). However, we received very good service from the busperson, a very friendly and efficient lady. It took ten minutes to get our soup, and our food came out immediately after that, giving us no time to enjoy the soup, the Hot and Sour Chicken Soup was good. My food, the noodle special with Filet and Scallops was luke warm upon being served. I was immediately turned off. I liked the texture of the scallops, but they were drowning in an overpowering sauce that I could not identify and did not enjoy. My husband ordered the Prawns and Mushrooms, which he enjoyed, but felt that the culinary school diploma inside the door was a little pompous for the food served. We could have had that quality of food for 6.00 a portion at any other thai place in town. Prices were far too high. The desserts looked good, but I was so put off by the atmosphere and the food that we didn't stay to try any. Our bill was given to us on an ice cold stainless steel clipboard....when I picked up the clipboard, I thought...""COLD""....just like everything else about Cafe de Thai. We won't be back and do not recommend it. Pros: Patio Seating, Original Food Cons: Service, Ambiance, Prices. more

Simply Incredible. Pretentious decor & prices, maybe not authentic, but simply incredible. 8/23/2008

The style of the place is a little too chic- minimalist decor with a proud-of-itself waterfall in the middle of the room. The servers are told to be quiet- maybe a little too quiet. The prices are not for the faint of heart: my last tab there was about $90 for two people. However, it was a meal I will never forget, and whenever I chance to eat foods that are even vaguely similar, I just start remembering that exquisite meal. Pros: Food, decent service, plenty of parking Cons: Inconveniently located, quite expensive, and somewhat pompous more

Okay 6/23/2008

The food is decent.. but overpriced. Doesnt seem to be authentic thai food, but is still okay. Atmosphere is very barren but pretty cool waterfall. Pros: cool waterfall Cons: only average food more

not really thai... more like thai-influenced 1/23/2008

some review i read said this was the 2nd best thai place in reno. since it was closer than the #1 place, i decided to go here instead. big disappointment. spicy chicken was not at all spicy. plus the food was just not authentic thai food. it was maybe thai-inspired at best. the decor was kind of fast food meets trendy, so not even that cute. and my dessert cost over $8 (very close to what my entree cost) and was not even that great. overall, it was fine, edible food. but it's not where you want to go if you're craving thai. i used to love the thai place right next to nu yalk pizza, but they closed that one down. next time i guess i'll venture to the #1 place (supposedly bangkok cuisine... we'll see). more

Great Thai Food 3/24/2006

This restaurant doesn't serve authentic thai food so you don't really see so many thai people dining there. But if you have a hard time eating real thai food but want to try americanized thai food, this is the place. As compared to real thai food, the flavor of the food is very light, which I think is easier for Americans to eat. The interior of this restaurant is superb and memorable. The waterfall coming down from the ceiling is so beautiful and some designers' vases are displayed. It's decorated very modern and contemporary. Pros: great food, great service Cons: expensive more

Excellent Choice! 9/15/2004

This is an incredible restaurant. From the appetizers to the specialty drinks (try their blended lychee concoction), to the entrees (I highly recommend the seafood dish with coconut sauce), the flavors drive your taste buds to song. Each dish is prepared with exceptionally fresh ingredients that leave you feeling satisfied and never guilty. Their desert tray begs at your taste buds. Each dish is intricately beautiful and more than delectable to your palate. Service is exceptional; the perfect combination of seeing to your every need before you ask yet never intrusive. more
