it just keeps getting better 5/22/2006

i swear, every time i go to bricco it gets better. their wine selection is still great and jason (their wine guy) *really* knows his stuff. i told him what i had last time and he knew just what to have me try this time around. and it was great. their cheeses are spectacular; i think the drunken goat is still my favorite. we like to have jason pick out the cheese for us and so far he's never disappointed. but wait, what's this i see on the dessert menu? a chocolate sampler? and a cooked pears with marscapone? hubby had the chocolate sampler which included a nutella panini and spicy chili chocolate. can you say 'oh my!'? i had the pear thingy which was cooked and drizzled in honey and something else and served with a dollop of marscapone and it was outrageous! i think i'll go back again for our next date nite. more

mmmmmmm, wine. mmmmmmmm, cheese. 2/3/2006

mmmmmmmm, everything at bricco. bricco is exactly what queen anne needed. a cozy wine bar with excellent food and great, knowledgeable service. their daily-changing menu is sure to please anyone's palette and wallet. they have 25 or more cheeses (like drunken goat, humboldt fog, and many more) on the menu, which can be ordered alone or paired with something from their selection of cured meats. they also have THE best bruscetta i've ever had, as well as delicious paninis, salads, eggplant lasagna, fish-of-the-day, and more. i've never been able to even think about a dessert menu since i'm always stuffed to the gills from the main meal. they have an impressive wine collection, but what's *really* impressive is how knowledgeable jason (the wine steward and part-owner) is about the taste of the different wines. the first time i went to bricco i didn't recognize any wines on the by-the-glass menu, so i told him what i normally drink and he chose a wine for me. and it's now my favorite wine. jason is nice, too, and very patient. lastly, bricco is very reasonably priced. hubby and i split a 3-cheese plate, he had a panini, i had the halibut, and we drank a total of 3 glasses of wine. and the bill was around $45. the only negative i've found is that the chef can be very very heavy-handed with the garlic. other than that, i already have another night planned there and i'm sure i'll have many more. more

Good, Great, Excellent Wine Bar on Queen Anne 2/2/2006

I live on Queen Anne, and have been craving a new space that is nearby for my friends and I to enjoy a sip of wine, and a nibble. Bricco satisfies on both counts with a nice wine menu and excellent appetizer selection. Bricco was open less than a month when I first tried it (I've been several times already), and was very busy on all occasions. The crowd thins out between 9-10 pm on weekdays. I wasn't very impressed with all of the bartenders, some of whom couldn't recite their favorite wine or a recommendation without reading the wine list themselves. I am still but a tourist as far as my knowledge of wine is concerned; however, I expected the staff to hold a little more knowledge than they did. The food was superb, however, and the owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The black truffle potato gratin, asparagus, salad, and baguettes topped with tuna, chickpea, or pesto were delicious. This is fast becoming my favorite local place to relax on any night of the week. more

My kind of wine bar 1/17/2006

It's early yet as the winebar has not been open a full month yet. However, I've been here twice already and will likely head back again this week. Why do I love it? 1. Great Italian wine list 2. Styles itself after Italian enoteche 3. Simple, flavorful food prepared from fresh ingredients. 4. Nice cheese list. 5. Great prices, especially on lesser known wines of good to excellent quality. (Ruche'? It's a grape from Piedmont, Italy) The staff has a few kinks to work out, including keeping the temperature stabilized and keeping the smells from the kitchen from overwhelming the air in the rest of the place. I have high hopes that I will be able to give this joint a five star rating in the not-too-distant future. more

A piece of Italy on Queen Anne 1/16/2006

This is rapidly becoming my new favorite wine bar. I've spent much time in Italy over the last few years, and walking into Enoteca Bricco seems very familiar. It has a great wine list with exceptionally good prices (the prices on many of the bottles are closer to a retail price, instead of the huge restaurant mark-up). The food is great, and adheres to the Italian way cooking--simple, yet excellently prepared plates. The black truffle potato gratin is amazing! The atmosphere and service is excellent. Jason, the wine manager who cut his teeth working in New York with the likes of Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich, is extremely friendly and knows his stuff. The last time we were there, we told him we wanted something unique and different. He brought over a wine from Piemonte which we had never even heard of before, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato. It was wonderful. I highly recommend paying a visit more

A standard for wine bars to attain ... 1/10/2006

Bricco seems to have gotten off to a stellar start. It is reasonably priced, the menu is well constructed, and whatever shortcomings one might find will no doubt be worked out in short order. Four of us shared a meat and cheese plate, and two of the party ordered dinner including a gorgeous salad and a panino. Aside from some over roasted nuts, it was flawless, timed perfectly, and well presented. While I'd hoped for a slightly broader glass pour selection, the list as a whole is great. The emphasis on Europeans is helpful at a time when the overly extracted new world stuff seems to be crowding Seattle's menus, and there are a couple of items that you wont find anywhere else in Seattle. If you go on a popular night, then be prepared to shed the fleece -- the smallish place combined with a close kitchen gets a little steamy. There apparently are plans to get that worked out, but dress in layers or go on cold night until then. If you go on a weekend, be aware that it only seats 18 in the dining area, and the bar becomes pretty close quarters. I suspect that as good as Bricco is, we'll all be willing to wait our turn to get a seat ... more

i LOVE new places lately! 1/4/2006

after my recent experiences, i'm officially dropping my habit of only going to places that have been recommended/highly rated. tonight i ventured off on my own and tried another new restaurant and holy moly was it good! hubby and i split a 3 cheese platter which came with bread, greens and jelly (we got to pick our own cheeses out of over 20 on the menu, like drunken goat, cave aged gruyere, rogue river smokey blue, etc) and the waiter recommended FANTASTIC wines for us. hubby had a veggie panini and i had the halibut for dinner and we all but licked our plates clean. and to top it off, with the cheese plate, 3 generous glasses of wine AND the entrees, it came to a little over $45 - very reasonably priced. the wait staff was warm, friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable and i can't wait to go back and try their daily-changing menu again. located at the bottom of the new condos on queen anne ave, across from the 5-spot more
