Sausage get's a Thumbs Up 6/25/2011

Service was fast. Sausage was best. Brisket was bland. Ribs were real good. Their sides were plentiful in variety. Lotta knick-knacks to buy in the gift shop if you're into that. more

Love Blacks BBQ 4/17/2010

My husband and I love Blacks BBQ. The owners and staff are real freindly. My husband just started smoking meat and on out first visit we spoke to Kent Black who was not only eager to feed us but feed my husbands eager for knowledge on how to smoke meat. He gave us a tour of his pit and cutting area. We love the sausage and ribs. Pros: Sausage is juicy, brisket Cons: We live too far away more

Remember When 5/8/2009

We used to run down to Blacks during lunch time at the old high school and for a quarter you would get a ring, a hand full of crackers and a soda. You would go to one of the picnic tables that had a knife on a chain and cut your ring into bite sizes and enjoy your meal. more

Tried today for the first time 3/28/2009

It wasn't awful but I would definitely not recommend it. I was surprised at how busy this place is, but I am very picky with BBQ. \r \r We've got a long tradition of West Texas bbq in our family.. brisket cooking, mesquite steaks, etc.\r \r I have to say that the sausage was better than their brisket (tough, and sliced way too thick on their sandwiches). Their sauce was nothing to rave about. Mediocre at best. If you are a BBQ elitist, this place probably isnt for you. \r \r However, if you're a newbie, this will probably do. more

Worth the Drive 1/26/2009

They are World Famous for their Bar-B-Q and it taste like it. They have the best Brisket around and the prices are great. They have been around 75 years so you know they have to be good. more

Awful 11/30/2008

People who gave this place a positive review must not have taste buds. Meat has absolutely no smoke flavor whatsoever, brisket is not seasoned at all, sausage is pretty bland-save for the Jalapeno/Cheese which tastes like they used cheese wiz in their grind, BBQ sauce is not good at all, and the sides don't look, and aren't for the most part, appetizing in any way. Go to Kreuz or Smitty's. If it's Sunday and Kreuz and Smitty's are closed, go to Dairy Queen. Pros: Open Sunday Cons: Everything more

Family has been eating with the Black's since 1938 9/2/2008

Well I guess you could say I am kind of partial to Black's as my family has been eating there since 1938, a scant 6 years after they opened across the street at their old location. Its close enough to Gonzales that we have been many times over the decades. I'm now 36 and have been eating there as long as I can remember. What a great family the Black's are, and nowhere else will you feel more wecome. Often Mr. Black is right there and you may see sons Kent and Terry in the mix too. They have the ""secret"" to the best post oak fired 'Que around. Pros: Great value, delicious, friendly folks, historic downtown area, ambience is just right. Cons: If very busy, sometimes the serving line seems to be moving slow, but hang in there, its worth it. more

Great Food, Great People 9/1/2008

Best BBQ in the U.S. 8/27/2008

Black's BBQ is hands down the best in the west, and everywere else. GRRRREEEATTT taste and service. Very traditional and you get a very homey feel while your there. For me it's worth the drive from Orange County, California just to eat there. I love to eat, some say way too much, but when I get to Black's I go crazy and eat enough for at least five people. I cannot get enogh of the sausage. mmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!! Im hands down the biggest fan of bbq and I have eaten it In very many restaurants. The best ones are in Texas. ""GOD bless Texas"", and the beast one in texas is................ Black's Barbecue of course! Pros: Everything about Black's Cons: I wish I lived closer to Texas more

Best Barbeque Sausage in Texas!!! 8/27/2008

Black's is a taste of home for me! I've not lived in Lockhart, Texas since 1969, but I'm able to remember my friends and neighbors and all those ""down-home"" memories each and every time I'm able to order the best barbequed sausage I've tasted ANYWHERE!! The staff and management and their dedication to both quality & tradition will keep me coming back for memories year after year!! Thank you ALL for great taste, great service & great memories!! more

Best BBQ in South Texas! 8/27/2008

I live in So Austin and don't mind the drive for some good country B-B-Q at Black's. Food is great and staff are friendly. They have all the fixing's and dessert too! The hours of operation are long enough to make it in from a hard days work or week-end day trip. I have frequented this establishment for 6 years and have never been dissatisfied with the food or service. Owners support local sports. Pros: parking, food, service Cons: n/a more

Best BBQ In Texas! 7/21/2008

My family is contantly asking for BBQ from Texas so I have visited many BBQ places from Houston to Dallas and from Midland to Palestine. I tried Kreuz and Smitty's but ever since finding Black's I don't go any where else! My family loves Black's BBQ and when I go home to Chicago I cannot get through the door without first handling over Black's BBQ! Pros: I liked the meat served up on Butcher paper! more

Best BBQ in Texas 7/18/2008

I have eaten at hundreds of BBQ places in Texas, and Black's has no doubt the best smoked brisket! It taste like it has been smoked for days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would totally recommend this place! more

Excellent brisket among stiff area competition 7/11/2008

They don't have prime rib (point: Kreuz), but the brisket here was the juiciest I've ever had. This place has sides and sauce, which is one thing that this place has over Kreuz. Kreuz does not have said condiments which in my opinion are critical to thorough barbecue enjoyment. Also the sausage, ribs and turkey were all well-smoked and delicious. I waited for over a half hour in a line that stretched out the door and up the sidewalk before getting my sides and then ordering my meat, and feel it was worth it. I, too, came on a Sunday (and an empty stomach), but do not regret my visit. Wet barbecue isn't just for Yankees after all, and the basic mustard-based sauce at Black's is a fine complement to the smoky, succulent meats. Great barbecue here. One tip: watch out for $3 beers. Pros: Smoke on the walls, delicious and juicy brisket Cons: Do you seriously care about ambience at a barbecue joint? more

Kreuz's was closed, so... 1/13/2008

A friend and I drove down to Lockhart to experience the legendary Kreuz's barbecue. Silly us, we went on a Sunday, when Kreuz's is closed. There's a billboard for Black's BBQ, so we decide to find it and see if it was open. Well, it happened to be one of the 8 days of the week the place is open, so we were in luck. Pros: Open when others aren't, good standard Texas BBQ Cons: Disconnected and uninterested service more

  • There is something timeless about the feel of this relaxed cafe with Texas license plates lining one wood wall and Longhorn horns decorating the others.

No wonder: It has been run by the same family since 1932.

Owner Edgar Black, the son of the founder, still does things the way Daddy did, using post oak to indirectly smoke the meat, which is seasoned only with salt and pepper. The moist, deep-flavored brisket cooks for 24 hours, the good beef-and-pork sausage is homemade. Hammy pork ribs, chicken redolent of smoke. Made-from-scratch sauce is thick, red and sweet. Sides are numerous.
